Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date May 15, 2005
WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS Widely scattered showers fell on the State late in the week, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Despite showers, dry conditions persisted across parts of the State. Soil moisture levels were rated 25 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
Dry weather allowed producers to continue planting cotton and peanuts. Hail reportedly damaged foliage on vegetables and trees in Northwest Georgia. Corn planting neared completion and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus appeared in early planted tobacco. Livestock producers continued limited hay feeding. Peaches remained in good condition.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Other activities included preparations for wheat harvest, applying fungicides, cutting hay, and the routine care of livestock and poultry.

DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Had a really bad hail storm (golf size) on Tuesday evening - a lot of damage to foliage on plants - trees, vegetables, etc.
DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Cool season hay being harvested.
Most of the week was hot and dry and used up any soil moisture. Turf wilting by Saturday morning but 3/4 in rain on Sunday.
For information about the apple season in north Georgia go to http:\\newsletters.ces.uga.edu/ngapples
Some hay harvested this week - corn will be planted next week.
DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Conditions are declining rapidly.
DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Scattered showers, rainfall amounts from 0 to .4 of an inch. Still dry! Crops and pastures suffering.
Could use a rain; prepping for wheat harvest; baling some fescue hay; Bermuda finally beginning to do something.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Much warmer temperatures and a few scattered showers. Could use some more rain. Corn planting nearing completion. Some hay producers cutting hay. Hay feeding continues for some livestock.
