Georgia weather and crops, 2005 February 6

Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date February 6, 2005
SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES RETURN Temperatures were more seasonable this past week, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Low temperature got to the 20's in north Georgia and the 30's for south Georgia. High temperatures spanned the 60's for the entire state. Soil moisture levels were rated 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 63 percent adequate, and 34 percent surplus.
The rain and cold, early in the week, affected grazing conditions, small grains, and small pines. There were concerns about calving and lambing. During the week, the northern parts of the state had over an inch of precipitation. Rain resulted in wet pasture conditions for most of the state. Small grains need to be fertilized. Pasture, vegetable, and wheat conditions were all rated in mostly good or fair condition.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Other activities included soil testing, lime application, repairs after the ice, transplanting of tobacco, routine care of livestock and poultry.
