State Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date February 8, 2004
Issue GA-CW0604
Agricultural Summary HEAVY RAINS
The State experienced heavy rains late in the week that helped replenish soil moisture and surface water, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Heavy rains caused muddy conditions for livestock operations. Poor pasture and winter grazing conditions led to increased hay feeding for livestock producers. County Extension Agents reported and average of 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork.
Growers continued to take soil samples and prepare for spring planting. Producers applied lime and nitrogen to fields and pastures. Tobacco, in the greenhouses, and cabbage transplanted into the fields looked good. Some areas started to see growth of winter wheat and winter grazing. Small grains and wheat looked good. Routine care of livestock and poultry continued.

DISTRICT COMMENTS February 8, 2004
DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST We had three inches of rain this week.
DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Heavy rain fell at end of week along with high winds. Pastures muddy. The major activity is the routine care of livestock and poultry.
DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available.
DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Starting to see some growth of winter wheat and winter grazing.
Too wet and/or raining most of the week to be in the fields. Routine care of livestock & poultry.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Heavy rain late in the week. Rains were welcome for small grains and winter grazing but made for lots of mud around livestock operations. Hay feeding continues to be heavy for livestock due to very poor pasture conditions and poor winter grazing conditions. Some farmers taking soil samples in preparation for spring planting and spring fertilization of pastures and hayfields. Rain also helped in bringing pond and stream levels back up.
Rain has made mud a problem on dairy farms. These conditions combined with cold temperatures will likely negatively affect cow health. Growing conditions for winter forages have not been great for some time.
Producers are still feeding livestock with hay from last year. The weather has cooled off significantly. We have been on the fringes of the severe winter weather so far.
DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Wheat is looking good finally. Heavy rains on Friday. Cooler temperatures.
More rain forecasted for late this week.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 0.26" of rainfall. Small grain looks good overall.
DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Preparing land for planting. Tobacco in greenhouses doing well. Cabbage transplants in field look good. Applying lime and applying nitrogen to winter grazing. Selling beef cattle. Heavy rain Friday afternoon. Largest single rain event in several weeks. Tobacco transplants in the greenhouse look very good. Farmers are taking soil samples and spreading lime.
DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
