Georgia weather and crops, 2004 November 7

Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date November 7, 2004
COOL TEMPERATURES A storm front passed through the State, toward the latter part of the week, bringing widely scattered rains and cooler temperatures, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Rainfall varied with reports of up to 4 inches in some areas. However, the drier weather during the first part of the week aided fall harvesting and seeding. Soil moisture levels were rated 1 percent very short, 12 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus.
Despite the wet conditions in some areas, producers made excellent progress in harvesting fall crops and planting small grains. Peanut harvest neared completion. Cotton harvest progressed more rapidly than normal. Small grains benefitted from the recent rainfall as moist soils encouraged germination. Hay producers continued with their last cutting of hay.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Pecan harvest picked up momentum. Onion transplanting was underway. In some areas, cattlemen were feeding supplement hay. Other activities included the routine care of livestock and poultry.

DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Received over an inch of rain this week. Temperatures have finally cooled down and the apple harvest is complete.
Rain this week delayed final corn harvest and wheat planting.
DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Cool, dry weather prevailed at the end of the week, should help plants enter dormancy.

DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Pasture growth has slowed. Some hay being fed. Soybean harvest has been slowed by morning fogs and overcast conditions.

DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Heavy rain on Thursday, 1.5 inches or more in some locations. Cooler temperatures late in the week. Small grain and winter grazing planting continued. Small grains looked good. Hay harvesting continued.
Conditions are good in the county.
Mild temperatures and moisture have made this fall very good for planting wheat & winter grazing.

DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Still slow in finishing up cotton and peanuts due to humid, wet weather. Soil conditions good for small grain planting and germination. Widely varying soybeans yields were reported.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 0.69" of rainfall. Peanut harvest complete. Small grain planted.
DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Picked cotton and peanuts. Planted small grains for grazing. Cut down cotton stalks and baling hay.
