Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date November 28, 2004

HEAVY RAINS Fall harvest stalled for most of the week due to heavy rains and wet field conditions, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Rainfall varied with reports of as much as 5 to 7 inches in some areas. Many farmers were unable to make substantial harvest progress due to the inclement weather. Drier conditions are needed in order to wrap up the remaining planting and harvesting activities. Soil moisture levels were rated 2 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 33 percent surplus.
Despite the slowdown from the wet conditions, cotton and pecan harvest continued to run ahead of the 5 year average. Small grains continued to respond well to the abundant moisture levels. However, in the Central area, supplemental feeding increased due to declining pastures conditions from the frost.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Onion transplanting continued but lagged behind the 5 year average. Other activities included weaning calves, repairing farm equipment, and the routine care of livestock and poultry.
