Georgia weather and crops, 2004 October 31

Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date October 31, 2004
DRIER WEATHER A week of favorable weather allowed producers to make good progress with fall harvest, according the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Harvesting peanuts and cotton was the top priority for the producers since rains has ceased. However, in the East Central area, unusually foggy and damp weather delayed harvest. Soil moisture was rated 11 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.
In the South Central area some reports indicate peanut, pecan, and cotton yields may be lower than anticipated. Soybean harvest continued. Hay producers were harvesting their last cutting of hay. Planting of small grains for grain and/or winter grazing continued.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Apple harvest was nearing completion. There were reports of TSWV damage in late planted greens. Other activities included the routine care of livestock and poultry and preparing land for planting winter crops.

District Highlights These comments are written by the Georgia County Extension Agents, and have been complied and edited by the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service.
DISTRICT COMMENTS October 31, 2004
DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Very mild weather - no frost yet - looks to be a very warm, mild fall in northwest Georgia.
Afternoon showers the past four days have halted many activities.
DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Light rain in the area this week, corn harvest and wheat planting continued.
DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Warm weather prevails.

DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Some hay put in; prepping for small grains planting; routine care of livestock & poultry.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL No rain this week. Hay producers harvested last cutting of hay. Small grain and winter grazing planting continued.
DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Unusually foggy, cloudy and damp weather has really delayed harvest. Lack of sunshine kept cotton damp until mid afternoon and peanuts won't dry after digging. TSWV really taking a toll on late planted greens and some fields that are nearing 155-160 days old.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST

Peanut harvest of late planted peanuts, grades of 79 reported. Green bean harvest of second plantings. Cotton harvest continued.
DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Still picking peanuts. Mowed cotton stalks and harrowed land after peanuts. Planted small grains. No till drilling pastures with winter small grains for grazing. Priority on growers minds is the tobacco buyout program. Some fields of peanuts yields were better than expected but on average yields will be down. Cotton yield ranged from 500-900 lbs. with about 300-500 pounds lost. Grades are mixed. Peanut yields averaged between 2000 to 3500.
Drier and warmer conditions. Farmers caught up on harvest. Beginning to see the impact of hurricanes on yield and grade.
Weather conditions have improved for harvesting cotton, pecans, peanuts, soybeans, and corn. There are still wet and muddy areas in row crop fields producers are having to work around during harvest. Yields were even lower than expected in cotton. Pecans have very poor yields if any in some orchards. Late corn was a total loss that not harvested before the hurricanes.
DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Some scattered showers on Thursday, mostly fog in mornings but harvest weather in the afternoon hours.
