Georgia weather and crops, 2004 October 24

Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date October 24, 2004
RAIN SLOWED HARVEST ACTIVITIES Wet and damp conditions continued to slow harvest of this year's peanut crop, according the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Services. Untimely rains, coupled with previous wet fields, kept peanut producers from making any favorable harvest progress. However, the recent rains have provided excellent soil moisture levels. Soil moisture was rated 9 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus.
Scattered rains kept fields moist, which slowed planting and harvesting across the State. Cotton producers resumed harvesting late in the week. Small grain planting continued. Seeded winter wheat emerged from recent showers. Producers cut and baled hay.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork. In other activities, producers continued planting rye, picking apples, and the routine care of livestock and poultry.
