DISTRICT COMMENTS January 18, 2004
DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST No comments available.
DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available.
DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST We got a little rain over the weekend, but beginning the week with some cold temperatures.
DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Winter grazing growth is slow.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Cold temperatures in the mornings and some showers late in the week. Small grains and winter grazing need more rain. Pasture conditions continue to decline and hay feed continues to increase.
Farmers have been harvesting greens, spraying for weeds and planting Vidalia onions.
DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Due to lack of rain and cooler temperatures, the winter wheat is slow growing and is not performing very well.
We received 0.34 inches of rainfall.
Some producers are counting tillers to determine if a split application of nitrogen is needed on small grains.
DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Soil sampling and harrowing fields. Fall winter grazing is growing slower than normal but not sure of the cause. Weather is probably the reason. We look to be short on rye, oats, etc., in fields and overseeded pastures at this point anyway. We will have to supplement cattle feed.
Cold fronts moving through have brought very little rain. Field work has started with spreading lime and harrowing fields. Soil sampling is being done on many farms.
DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
