State Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date January 11, 2004
Issue GA-CW0204
Agricultural Summary COLD TEMPERATURES
Warm temperatures, early last week, were followed by much colder temperatures, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Cold temperatures slowed grain growth. Rain was needed for winter grazing and small grains. Hay feeding to livestock continued to increase due to declining pasture conditions. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork, but field activities were limited due to the cold weather.
Growers mowed cotton stalks. Pecan orchard pruning and cleanup work continued. Wheat planting neared completion. Other activities included taking soil samples, liming fields, and the routine care of livestock and poultry.

DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Not much growth from winter annuals when it is this cold.
DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Cold last week kept farmers indoors except for when feeding livestock and clearing frozen water tanks.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Unseasonably warm weather in the early part of week and REALLY COLD the end of the week. Needing rain for small grains and winter grazing. Hay feeding to livestock continues to increase.
Cold weather continues. Received some rainfall this week.
Small grains not growing as well as expected due to cold weather.
No grass and poor quality hay is causing many cows to lose body condition.
DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Scattered showers last week. Wheat planting complete. Not much activity on the farm.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 0.08" of rainfall. Cold temperatures slowed grain growth. Farmers soil testing and liming fields. Pecan orchard pruning and cleanup
