DeFranco and Sons recalls Hazelnuts and Mixed Nuts due to possible E. coli contamination

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black alerts consumers to the recall of some hazelnuts and mixed nuts that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The recall includes bulk and consumer-packaged in-shell, hazelnut and mixed nut products from DeFranco and Sons, Los Angeles. The products may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. coli).

E. coli symptoms can include abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which is often bloody. Most infected people will recover within a week; however, some people can develop complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and require hospitalization. Those at high risk for complications include children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

The nuts were distributed nationwide and to Canada between Nov. 2 and Dec. 22, 2010. The recall includes:

Sunripe, one-pound package of Mixed Nuts with a Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 000143



Sunripe, two-pound package of Mixed Nuts with Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 001003



Sunripe, 50-pound package of Imperial Mixed Nuts, no Sell By Date listed, no UPC code



Sunripe, 50-pound package of Supreme Mixed Nuts, no Sell By Date listed, no UPC code



"Season's Greetings" Gift Pack, four-pound package of Mixed Nuts with a Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 101024



Georgia Packing, 50-pound package, Hazelnuts, only the products distributed by DeFranco and Sons between 11/2/10 to 12/22/10

The 50-pound bags of in-shell hazelnuts or mixed nuts with hazelnuts also may have been repackaged or sold in bulk containers to consumers.
