GA Agriculture Dept. finds contaminated kimchi in routine sample
Friday, August 6, 2010
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced today that Georgia Department of Agriculture food scientists have found Listeria monocytogenes in routine samples of kimchi, which Super H Mart Corp. was selling in its retail stores in Suwanee and Duluth, Ga.
Super H Mart Corp. is voluntarily recalling several bucket containers of Mat Kimchi and Pogi Kimchi processed in its commissary because of the potential for the products to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease. The most common manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which has symptoms of high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections to infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems such as persons with chronic diseases or taking chemotherapy for cancer.
Although the Listeria monocytogenes was detected in a small sample, the company is recalling the following containers:
Mat Kimchi 110-ounce plastic bucket container with sell by date of 8-24-10; 64-ounce plastic bucket container with sell by date of 8-24-10; and 5-gallon bucket container with a sell by date of 8-24-10 to 9-4-10.
Pogi Kimchi 64-ounce plastic bucket container with sell by date of 8-24-10; 5-gallon bucket container with a sell by date of 8-24-10 to 9-4-10.
The company urges consumers who have purchased the products to return them to the point of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions also may contact Sam Chung, deputy manager of H One Trading Company, at 678-31777-0760, ext. 120, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
