Georgia Voters Approve Equine Commodity Commission
Georgia voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday to establish an agricultural commodity commission for equine.
By approving Amendment #3, Georgians voted to create the commission; authorize a special motor vehicle license plate promoting the Georgia equine industry with designated funds to be disbursed to the commission; authorize contributions and donations to the commission; and fund advertising, promotion, research and educational programs for the equine industry through the commission.
"This is a good day for horses and horse lovers," said Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Horses and equestrian events are a vital and expanding segment of Georgia agriculture. Passage of Amendment #3 will help our equine industry to grow and develop."
Provisions of Amendment #3 allow the program to be implemented in January 2007. "We will be reaching out to stakeholders to develop the program," said Commissioner Irvin.
