LABORATORY REPORT
In the following pages will be found the results of
analysis of a large number of samples of foods and drugs
of a miscellaneous character which the inspectors have
secured throughout the State Messrs C R Clark and J
J Taylor made the examinations of the foods
WARNING TO DEALERS IN SALT FISH IN THE STATE
OF GEORGIA
This notice is to caution all buyers and dealers in fish
known as Salt Lake Herring Ocean Whiting and other
similar fish that it would be well to examine all such fish
on arrival before paying for same This precaution is nec
essary in order that the condition of the fish upon arrival
may be noted This department the past season found more
than 200000 pounds of fish of this kind in a decomposed
condition As most of such fish was unfit for human con
sumption we found it necessary to destroy it the loss fall
ing in most instances upon the dealers
It would be well for dealers in handling fish of this
character to bear in mind that the Pure Food Department
cannot take action against the packers where the dealer
has had the fish in his stock for a considerable length of
time In order to hold the packer responsible it is neces
sary to prove that the fish were not in proper condition
when shipped Therefore if all dealers in fish will exam
ine same immediately upon arrival and if found in im
proper condition immediately notify the Pure Pood Depart
ment they will look into the matter and in this way avoid
the loss falling upon the dealer
It would also be well for all dealers in Salt Fish during
the warm season to either keep such fish in cold storageHBHHHH

or in a cool cellar as they will keep much better in a cool
place than they will in a warm place
The Pure Food Department has information that the
packers of Salt Fish are packing a much better quality of
fish this season and will endeavor to furnish good sound
fish to the trade and we trust that the dealers will try to
cooperate with the packers It is very essential at the pres
ent high price of all kinds of meats as well as all kinds of
food stuffs to conserve every pound
Respectfully

Acting Chief Food Inspector
IT IS A VIOLATION OF THE STATE PURE FOOD LAWS
TO SELL BAD EGGS
This is the season of the year when eggs should be
carefully handled and at all times kept in a cool dry stor
age Dealers should see that all eggs are candled when
received and should they be kept in stock longer than four
or five days it would be necessary for the dealer to re
candle them before selling them to the consumer
The Pure Food Department of Georgia is endeavoring
to secure the full cooperation of all who handle eggs as
the price of eggs is very high and when an egg goes bad
there is not only a loss of money to someone but food as
well It is a violation of the State Laws to sell one bad
egg therefore the necessity of candling before selling them
to the consumer We trust that all who are interested
in the egg line will cooperate with the Pure Food Depart
ment to this end
Respectfully
O S LEE
Acting Chief Food Inspectori inMmiiriiii

A CHEATHAM
State Drug InspectorRECORD OF INSPECTION DEPARTMENT FOR JULY 1919 s
Below appears an itemized statement of POOD and FEEDINGSTUFFS found to be in violation of the Food and Drugs Act of Georgia
and the same was ordered condemned as being unfit for human consumption and in violation of the Act
In some instances it is possible to conserve much of this condemned food by relabeling tagging and assorting of such as will do to be
permitted to be sold while that found not to be fit for human consumption is either destroyed or put under bond by order of court for its sale
and distribution
In other instances where it is possible to conserve any wholesome Food material the Department directs the same to be done The mere
condemnation and withholding from sale of a lot of food products does not necessarily imply that the foods are unfit for human consump
tion but the manner in which it is being offered to the consuming public is in violation of the Food Laws in such instances it is withheld from
sale until it is made to meet the legal requirements
