The Georgia Department of Agriculture

Vol. V.

Atlanta, Ga., December, 1918.

No. 12.

SACCHARIN NO SUGAR SUBSTITUTE.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture through its Office of Information has recently released the following statement regarding its attitude towards the use of saccharin in food products. During the past summer, the Georgia Department of Agriculture through its Pood Division and Laboratories has done a large amount of work in detecting violations of the State law in regard to its substitution for sugar in soft drinks and syrups. Therefore, the information given below backs up the stand taken by the the State authorities under its rules and regulations. The circular is as follows:
"The use of saccharin in foods is regarded as an adulteration under the Pood and Drugs Act, according to a statement issued by the United States Department of Agriculture.
The Department had been asked by various interests to reverse, or, at least to reconsider, the position which it took in 1911, upon the use of saccharin in food brought under the jurisdiction of the Federal Food and Drugs Act. This position in effect is that investigation has shown that the continued use of saccharin for a long time, in quantities over three-tenths of a gram a day, is likely to impair digestion and that the addition of saccharin for cane sugar and other forms of sugar reduces the food value of the product and hence lowers its quality. Therefore, the Secretary of Agriculture declared that he would regard as adulterated under the Food and Drugs Act any food containing saccharin, which might be brought under the jurisdiction of that law.

MONTHLY REPORT
The Department declares that it is aware of no investigations which contribute any more recent evidence pointing to the harmlessness of saccharin. It has therefore declined to reverse its decision and it has regarded it as unfitting at this time to reopen the question for the reason that a case is now pending in the courts in which the issues are presented clearly. The Department will endeavor to press the trial of this case."

BAD PISH IN GEORGIA.

Since the middle of the summer of 1918, the Food Division of the Georgia Department of

Agriculture has found in this State large quantities of salt fish unfit for food. Most of these

shipments were made from the Great Lakes region and the condition of many of the lots was nothing short of rotten. The Pood Inspection Division, under Mr. P. A. Methvin, condemned

o o a

and destroyed much of this material without first submitting samples to the laboratory, while in

o

other cases samples were drawn and submitted for examination.

>

Below will be found a record of examination and disposition of lots of fish inspected or

o

seized. The items marked (*) were submitted to the laboratory. All-the others were disposed

>

of without the necessity of examination by the laboratory.
