Onion of Humble
But Noble Birth
What is it about Vidalia onions that make them fare fit for a king? During the Middle Ages, the onion was considered as valuable as gold. And, in Egypt, mummies
were packed away with miniature "mummies" filled with onions to accompany them on their trip to the afterlife. With onions so revered throughout the ages, it only follows that Vidalias, the modernday royalty of all onions, would be fare fit for anyone from a king on down to us "common folk."
Our guest columnist this week is Wendy Brannen, Executive Director, Vidalia Onion Committee, 100 Vidalia Sweet Onion Drive, Vidalia, GA 30474-8827
This noble bulb can be grown legally only in a very limited region of southeast Georgia, where each farmer tends to them as a dedicated footman would his lordship.

Thompson Farms Grows Business the Old-Fashioned Way

Sometimes going back is the best way to move successfully forward, and few know that truth better than the owners of Georgia Grown Gold member Thompson Farms.
Raymond Thompson, of Thompson Farms, grew up "belted to a tractor" and has been in the hog business his entire life. His father began the farm in the 1930s.
However, around the turn of the century large corporate farms began raising hogs cheaper and in such volume many small producers went out of business. The corporate farms put many packing plants out of business, so to sell their hogs, producers had to ship them to Chicago, losing weight, and profit all the way. Thompson Farms was on the knife's edge. Raymond's daughter, Donna Thompson Anderson, recalls that time and the momentous decision it spurred.
"Daddy said, `something is wrong here. We can't keep up, so we're going

back to the way we used to raise hogs, putting them back on the ground.'" Thompson said a happier hog, raised unconfined, is healthier and has no disease problems, making for better meat.
However, while the return to natural production reduced some inputs, it took longer to feed out the hogs, so the decision was not without its hazards.
"We went back to raising hogs naturally as a way to differentiate ourselves from the corporate packers,"

Donna said. "But there was no market at the time because the meat was a little more expensive. Finally, we got some restaurants interested because the meat tasted so much better, but it was still hard going. And then, Whole Foods came calling."
The nation's largest distributor of natural foods signed an agreement with Thompson Farms four years ago, and the operation took off. Today, Thompson Farms employs about 15 full-time local workers and seasonal help as needed.
A new decision came this year, when Thompson Farms joined Georgia Grown with a Gold membership.
"Andrew joined Georgia Grown because he's always been interested in keeping farmers in the limelight, especially local or Georgia producers," Donna said.
"We want to show our solidarity with other Georgia producers and

Legislature Passes Agriculture-Related Bills in 2012 Session

The 2012 Georgia Legislative Session has come and gone, and it was a very successful year for agriculture in Georgia. Great advocates for the agriculture industry in the General Assembly, including House Agriculture Chairman Tom McCall and Senate Agriculture Chairman John Bulloch, worked hard for the agriculture industry, resulting in such accomplishments as tax reform, metal theft

reform, and more. The House and Senate passed HB 386, a
very pro jobs piece of legislation. The long-awaited tax reform bill emanating from nearly two years of consideration showed up with many of the same considerations for agriculture as seen from the Tax Council Report released the first week of 2011. Passage of the bill was overwhelming in both chambers; the House voting 155-9 and the Senate voting 54-0. Key provisions of the bill relating to agriculture include:
Maintaining all of the sales tax exemptions on agricultural inputs: fertilizer, pesticides, fuel used for irrigation, etc.
Broadening the sales tax exemptions for all other agricultural inputs, such as farm equipment parts, implements, farm use equipment.
Establishing a sales tax exemption on diesel, gasoline and other energy used in agricultural production or processing starting January 1, 2013.This includes livestock facilities not currently covered, such as poultry and livestock processors, dairies and swine production facilities.
Establishing a phased in sales tax exemption on energy used for manufacturing by removing 25% each year until 2015.
A registration process at the Georgia Department of Agriculture to obtain an agricultural sales and use tax exemption certificate that contains an exemption number.

The Department of Agriculture is looking forward to teaming up with the Department of Revenue to begin to set up a program to certify farmers in Georgia so they can receive the benefits outlined above in the tax reform bill.
In addition, the 2013 Fiscal Year Budget had some great earmarks for Agriculture including $362,657 restored to Cooperative Extension from the original budget, $600,000 provided to Cooperative Extension for four crop scientist positions, and $150,000 for two positions at the

Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Ga. EPD Open Burning Ban Begins May 1 for 54 Counties

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division open burning ban for 54 Georgia counties became effective May 1 and will continue through September 30.
EPD initiated the ban in 1996 with the 13-county metro Atlanta area and it has been in effect for the current area since 2005.
The open burning ban prohibits citizens and businesses from burning yard and land-clearing debris. Some actions, such as campfires and agricultural activities, are exempt from the ban.
The open burning ban is in addition to the year-round state ban on the burning of household garbage.
People, particularly children, are more apt to be outdoors during May through September. It is during this time that ozone and particle pollution are generally higher than other parts of year. Burning yard waste releases nitrogen oxides and particle pollution into the air. Both pollutants contribute to lung and heart disease.
The Clean Air Act requires the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to periodically review the current air quality standards to ensure that they are still protective of public health. EPD monitoring data shows that air quality in Georgia is improving. "We are working hard to improve air quality in Georgia,
Seasonal Market Seeks
Farmers and Vendors
Fort Valley Farmer's Market is seeking farmers and other vendors to sell at the weekly market that will operate in downtown Fort Valley from May 5 through October. The market, located at the intersection of East Church and Lowe Streets next to the Passenger Depot in downtown Fort Valley, will be open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon.
The Market supports the Georgia Made, Georgia Grown market plan, which means products sold at the market should be grown or made locally. Approved market items include fresh produce, plants, flowers, crafts and homemade baked goods. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and vendors may set up on the days of their choice.
Vendor fees are $20 for the season or $5 per weekend.
For more information, call the Fort Valley Main Street/Downtown Development Authority at 478-825-5986 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

meal. They have monocular vision, which means their eyes are on the sides of the head, and each eye can be used independently. Contrary to popular belief, they don't hear the earthworms.
*** What is the difference between pickling cucumbers and salad cucumbers?
Pickling cucumbers hold up better during the canning and pickling process than the salad/slicing types; however, this does not mean they must be used exclusively to make pickles. In fact, some people prefer them for fresh eating to those sold as salad or slicing cucumbers.

Poke Salad, Corn Bread
and Sassafras Tea
Born in the late Nineteen Twenties Times were mighty bad. Back then a bunch of hungry mouths to
feed Was all that Daddy had.
The next meal an unanswered question So my mama said. Looking back on those lean years Wonder how they kept us fed.
Jobs were mighty hard to find Food scarce as it could be The three that I remember most Are Poke Salad, Cornbread and Sassafras
Tea.
Eight kicking feet in a double bed, Was quite a sight to see Not knowing we were poor Was normal life for me.
When you're young, all life is good. Too soon it passes by. Sometimes when I reminisce, Memories make me cry.
The hamburgers, hot dogs and barbecue Are mighty fine you see I still often eat lest I forget Poke Salad, Cornbread and Sassafras
Tea.
Today a daughter stopped by to visit Guess what she brought to me. You're right, you guessed it She brought me two Kraut dogs, a piece
of cake And a jug of good ole sweet ice tea. Thank you, Lord, for being so good to me.

Thompson Farms Grows Business the Old-Fashioned Way

Commissioner Black, who has been so supportive to agriculture," she continued. "We all have to fight to keep people remembering agriculture and its importance. When you go to the grocery and see so much imported food, it's scary. We can provide our own food sources here in the U.S., and need to for more jobs and better product."
Andrew Thompson, Raymond's son and partner, was a big cotton and peanut producer until 2009, when he joined the hog business full time to help diversify the operation, make it profitable, and create a true legacy family farm.
Andrew's son, Bayly, 15, and daughter, Abby, both are interested in the farm and will likely go into the business. Abby is going into marketing, and Bayly, though young, already is active in the operation. Donna works in the office and "does a little bit of everything." Andrew and dad, Raymond, now 83, are still the heart of the business.
"Dad still comes to work every day," Donna said. "He'll tell you, we're family owned and family proud, and proud to be

How to Submit
A Seed Sample
For Testing
Farmers should adhere to the following steps in order to have seed tested at a state seed laboratory:
1. Send between one to two pounds of any large seed, such as soybeans, peanuts or corn, and about one-half to one-quarter pound, depending on seed size, of smaller seed.
2. Include the kind and variety, lot number or other identifying mark, along with your full name, address and telephone number. For greater efficiency in receiving your laboratory report, please include your e-mail address.
3. Mail seed samples in a cardboard box or similar container to protect them.
4. Allow 2-4 weeks for testing to be completed, depending on seed kind.
5. Farmers/consumers should send seed to: Georgia Department of Agriculture Tifton Laboratory Building, P.O. Box 1507, 3150 Hwy. 41 South, Tifton, GA 31793.
If you have any questions regarding seed testing, call (229) 386-3145 (Tifton). Information also is available on the Georgia Department of Agriculture website: www.agr.georgia.gov. Once you access the site, click on the option Divisions, and then click on Plant Industry. From the options displayed, select Seed Fertilizer & Feed, and then click on Seed Regulations and Testing.
Those individuals desiring to advertise agricultural seed for sale through the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin are advised to check the guidelines under the category heading Ag Seed for Sale before submitting their advertisements for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Rep. Jason Shaw and Sen. Rene Unterman fought for strong metal theft reform, and they were successful. The bill prohibits cash as a payment for the metal and the recycler is prohibited from cashing a check on-site. A voucher redeemable for cash can be utilized after three days. Onion
(Continued from Page 12)
What is majestic about Vidalia onions is their widespread appeal and versatility. Since they are not as pungent--or hot--as other onions, children with picky palates and adults with finicky digestive systems often thoroughly enjoy eating Vidalia onions. And, whether cooked into flavorful recipes or simply chopped up and served raw with salads, burgers, or vegetables, they please without producing tears.
In Medieval Europe, onions were considered so valuable that they were used as rent payments and weddings gifts. While that may be frowned upon today, Vidalia onions are quite coveted each spring and summer when they are in season. For more about how the noble Vidalia can fit conveniently into your everyday meal plans, visit VidaliaOnion.org or go to Facebook.com/VidaliaOnions.

Garden Chores
Do not remove foliage from bulbs prematurely; otherwise, you will weaken the plants. Allow the foliage to wither naturally. If you are anxious to bring color back to your garden, you can over plant bulb beds with annual flowers. Whether you plant seeds or transplants, do not injure the bulbs while planting.
A number of different kinds of beetles and worms will be feeding on vegetables this month. Many of these pests can be controlled with Sevin. Before purchasing pesticides, check the label information to be sure it is effective for the pests you want to control. Remember to apply the product according to label directions.
Inspect azaleas for insects this month. Yellow foliage may indicate the presence of either lace bugs or spider mites. Check the underside of leaves for these pests. If you see black deposits or a small insect about one-eighth inch long with lacy wings, you have lace bugs on your azaleas. Spider mites are too small to be seen, but if you discover webbing on the undersides of the leaves, it is indicative of their presence. Control with a pesticide approved for use on these pests.
If your azaleas need pruning in order to reduce their size, wait until after they bloom. Do not shear azaleas, as this will ruin their natural loose, tiered form. Prune the tallest stems at their point of origin.

Why do earthworms come out of the ground when it rains? Is it because they will drown if they don't?
When it rains, earthworms leave the ground because the wet surface makes it much easier for them to move from place to place without worrying about drying out in the hot sun. An earthworm's skin needs to remain moist for the worm to survive. It is also easier for them to find mates on the open ground as compared to underground isolated in their burrows. It is a misconception that the earthworms come out of the ground because they will drown if they did not.
*** I saw different kinds of garlic at a farmers market. I didn't even know there were different varieties. Are there many different kinds?
There is not an exact number, but it is believed that there are more than 600 varieties of garlic. Each garlic variety has its own particular appearance and characteristics including, to connoisseurs, particular flavor. Intriguing names like Early Italian Purple, Nootka Rose, Silver Rose, Italian Late, Chet's Italian, Mild French, Brown Tempest, German Red and German Porcelain may pique the interest of gardeners who like to cook. For more information about growing garlic, read for the publication "Garlic Production for the Gardener" from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. It is available online.
*** Can robins actually hear earthworms? It looks like they are listening to the ground.

Surprisingly, the famed southern onions revered for their sweet, mild flavor were discovered on a lark during the 1930s. During the Depression era, area farmers were looking for a new money crop after traditional row crops like corn, cotton, and tobacco brought low returns. What they expected to taste like any average onion did not. These onions were amazingly sweet!
Common storage onions can be harvested mechanically with very little labor, but Vidalias are still predominately hand planted and hand harvested just as they were in the 1930s. Their uniquely sweet taste--a result of South Georgia's low sulfur soil and mild climate--also means they are quite high maintenance. Sweet onions, unlike their more pungent and philistine cousins, have a higher water content that makes them pleasingly mild yet susceptible to bruises and cuts.
During the early fall, farmers plant Vidalia seed beds. The seeds grow into pencil-sized plants, which are then transplanted into rows in the late fall and early winter. Hundreds of field workers crawl along on their knees, carefully pressing thousands of tiny seedlings into the soil where they will reach maturity. Around 12-thousand acres are typically planted each year.
By early spring, the sweet, juicy bulbs

are ready for harvest. Workers once again hit the dirt and begin the tedious job of pulling each onion from the ground. First, the roots below the bulbs are lopped off.

Then, the green sprouts atop each bulb are
