Arrendale Equine Center in Alto March 31.
Located at the Lee Arrendale State Prison, the center officially opened in October 2011, and is the Department's fourth equine impound facility.
"When this facility opened through our joint partnership with the Georgia Department of Corrections, our department could not be more excited about this opportunity," said Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "This program not only rescues horses in Georgia but also provides rehabilitation, new skill sets and positive relationships between the inmates and the horses."
"I think this is the beginning of an
ag consumer line...
What is this product on the news called "pink slime?" Is it safe to eat?
The product is lean finely textured beef (LFTB). "Pink slime" is a recently coined, inaccurate and pejorative term for the product. LFTB is safe.
The process used to produce LFTB was developed more than 30 years ago. It allows for the recovery of more lean muscle tissue. The end result is a leaner ground beef that costs less for consumers.
Ammonium hydroxide is used to process LFTB. It was approved in 1974 and is used today in a variety of food products, including baked goods and confections. In ground beef production, it is used in gaseous form to raise pH levels in order to kill pathogens such as E. coli, which can cause food borne illnesses.

awesome relationship between our two agencies and what we can accomplish here, " said Kathy Seabolt, Lee Arrendale State Prison Warden, during the grand opening of the impound facility. "Not only for our agencies, but for Lee Arrendale State Prison, the staff here, and for the inmates working for this program."
Six horses that had been part of the state's impound program and rehabilitated by the equine inmate staff were offered for sale to the public on Saturday, March 31.
"All of the horses that were offered were accustomed to being ridden and were a great find for both novice and seasoned riders alike," said MAT Thompson, Equine Manager for the GDA.

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. popular among members because of the level of satisfaction gained from saving native plants and because it is a wonderful way to spend time outdoors working together with folks to give these plants new homes. GNPS obtains permission from commercial and residential property developers to relocate plants through organized rescues from sites planned for development. Members are allowed to keep many of the plants they rescue and many plants are donated to restoration projects and to the annual plant sale.
Spring time in Atlanta means that it's time for their annual plant sale. It isn't always easy to find some of the uncommon native plants for sale but this volunteer organized and run event will not disappoint you. The friendly volunteers are always ready to provide you with advice and suggestions for plantings in your own gardens. The GNPS plant sale takes place each spring and this year there will be a second plant sale out at Stone Mountain Park in the fall.
The highly informative GNPS website (gnps.org) is chock full of information about membership, meetings, and other events, as well as plant photographs and archives, not to mention the discussion forum where you can just ask your question straight up! GNPS meets six times a year on alternate months beginning in January and their meetings are open to the public. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every other month at the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Day Hall starting at 6.45 pm. A wide variety of subjects are covered by the speakers who come from all over Georgia to talk about everything from wildflowers, to coastal plants to bees, birds and butterflies and on to saving the American Chestnut. The upcoming

schedule can also be found on the website. Please join us at a meeting soon.

Ga. FFA Chapters Win
Prizes in Natl. Contest
The Union Grove FFA Chapter from McDonough, Ga., received 335 votes from local farmers to earn to top honors statewide in the 2012 FFA Chapter Challenge. The Henry County chapter will receive a $2,500 FFA Certificate of Credit good for FFA-related costs including chapter supplies, registration fees for national leadership conferences and other items.
The FFA Chapter Challenge, a second year program expanded to 12 states in 2012, challenged FFA members to meet farmers in their local communities to build relationships and learn about different agricultural careers. After meeting, FFA members encouraged the farmers to vote for their chapter online or over the phone.

to inspect equine at the facility beginning at 10 a.m. that morning with the auction following at 11 a.m. All horses were required to be picked up from the facility by April 1.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Equine Health Section is charged with the duty of ensuring that Georgia's equines receive humane care, including receiving adequate food and water. If owners do not comply with the state's laws concerning the health and welfare of their equine, the state has the authority to impound the animals of negligent owners. Since there are no state appropriated funds for the impound program, the department relies on the proceeds from the sale of the rehabilitated equines and donations from the public to continue caring for Georgia's abused and neglected horses, donkeys, mules, and ponies.
GDA will be scheduling more events throughout the year at its other facilities located throughout Georgia. Notices of these auctions will be published in the Market Bulletin.
At any of its equine events, GDA reserves the right to add or withdraw equine. Successful bidders should be prepared to tender the price of equine by cashier's check, money order or a personal check accompanied by a letter of bank approval. If a successful bidder fails to tender the price as required, GDA may refuse to accept any other bids made by

the successful bidder at any of its auctions.
For more information about the Department's impound program, contact the Equine Health office at 404-656-3713 (open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.).

Visit http://agr.georgia.gov/1impoundfacilities.aspx to learn more about the program and facilities, and watch a short video clip about the ribbon cutting event held at the Lee Arrendale Equine Center in 2011.

All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Insect Invader

(Continued from Page 11)

The UGA College of

Agricultural and Environmental

Sciences hosted 16 officials from

Central America during the last

week of March to provide a forum

of discussion about the kudzu bug.

These officials toured container

packing facilities, heard a series of

presentations by UGA and USDA

scientists on our current knowledge

of the insect, and participated in a

discussion with USDA Animal and

Plant Health Inspection Services

(APHIS). UGA, APHIS and the

Georgia Department of Agriculture

are now working with exporters in

implementing standard protocols to

minimize the risk of introducing

the insect into Central America.

The kudzu bug our new

unwelcomed guest is certainly

presenting a number of challenges

and problems.

Editor's Note: Thanks to Dr.

Wayne Gardner, professor and unit

coordinator, Department of

Entomology, University of

Georgia--Griffin Campus, 1109

contributing this article to the

Market Bulletin.

How to Submit
A Seed Sample
For Testing
Farmers should adhere to the following steps in order to have seed tested at a state seed laboratory:
1. Send between one to two pounds of any large seed, such as soybeans, peanuts or corn, and about one-half to one-quarter pound, depending on seed size, of smaller seed.
2. Include the kind and variety, lot number or other identifying mark, along with your full name, address and telephone number. For greater efficiency in receiving your laboratory report, please include your e-mail address.
3. Mail seed samples in a cardboard box or similar container to protect them.
4. Allow 2-4 weeks for testing to be completed, depending on seed kind.
5. Farmers/consumers should send seed to: Georgia Department of Agriculture Tifton Laboratory Building, P.O. Box 1507, 3150 Hwy. 41 South, Tifton, GA 31793.
If you have any questions regarding seed testing, call (229) 386-3145 (Tifton). Information also is available on the Georgia Department of Agriculture website: www.agr.georgia.gov. Once you access the site, click on the option Divisions, and then click on Plant Industry. From the options displayed, select Seed Fertilizer & Feed, and then click on Seed Regulations and Testing.
Those individuals desiring to advertise agricultural seed for sale through the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin are advised to check the guidelines under the category heading Ag Seed for Sale before submitting their advertisements for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Insect Invader

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Page 11

(Continued from Page 12)

kudzu bug's arrival in Georgia! Unfortunately, the insect also has
several bad impacts. Besides being a nuisance pest to people and our outdoor activities in the spring and fall months, the kudzu bug damages soybean. Average yield losses of 18% due to the insect have been reported from 19 studies conducted in Georgia and South Carolina in 2010 and 2011.
Kudzu bug adults move from kudzu to soybean in late June and early July. The adult and immature insects suck nutrients from the stems and leaf veins of the plants. Yield reductions result from reduced numbers of pods and decreased test weights. Early planted soybeans appear to be more impacted than later plantings. Ongoing studies are defining economic thresholds and management tactics for this new pest.
Although we have seen it successfully develop from egg to adult on only two

host plants in Georgia kudzu and soybean we are unsure what other plants the insect might damage. Home gardeners report apparent feeding on their string or pole beans and on fig bushes. Large numbers are also seen on wisteria, another legume.
The kudzu bug has also caused problems with our abilities to export goods to Central America. The Honduran government refused 4,000 container shipments of goods from Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina in February. Their actions were prompted by the discovery of several dead kudzu bug adults within shipping containers of poultry products from Georgia. Thankfully, they eased their sanctions, but the Hondurans and their Central American neighbors continue to carefully inspect containers arriving from infested areas in the U.S. and Asia.

New Insect Invader Causing Havoc

Wayne A. Gardner, Ph.D.
If you live near a kudzu patch in Georgia, you have likely encountered one of our most recent insect invaders the kudzu bug or Megacopta cribraria. The adults are of similar size and shape of our lady beetles. They are attracted to white surfaces like our homes, clothing, and vehicles. And, they produce a distinctive odor that is similar to that of their stinkbug relatives.
During the past few weeks, the UGA Cooperative Extension Service and many Certified Pest Control Operators across the state have received numerous complaints and inquiries from clientele and customers about "swarms" of the insect on homes and landscape plants.
This phenomenon is actually the large number of adult kudzu bugs that have emerged from shelters under tree bark, behind siding, in attics, and beneath debris where they spent the winter. Before settling on kudzu plants that are just now sprouting, they often congregate on our homes and other light-colored surfaces and our landscape plants. We will soon see this problem subside as the bugs move to neighboring kudzu patches to feed and lay eggs.
The kudzu bug was first discovered in Georgia in October 2009 when homeowners in several northeastern Georgia counties complained of the insects on their homes. Scientists discovered that those insects were moving from nearby kudzu patches in search of shelters in which to spend the winter. This also was the first occurrence of this insect outside of its native range in Asia.
We likely will never know how the insect was actually introduced into Georgia, but genetic studies have confirmed that this was a single introduction and that it mostly likely came from Japan.
In 2009, the kudzu bug was confirmed in nine Georgia counties northeast of Atlanta. By the end of 2011, it had spread into 125 Georgia counties, eight Alabama counties, all of South Carolina, 56 North Carolina counties, and one county in

Virginia. In just two years, the insect had traveled a maximum of 340 linear miles and was occupying an area that was 40 times larger than it occupied in 2009!
Its common name "kudzu bug" comes from its love of the invasive kudzu vine that plagues our woodlands and landscapes. Indeed, USDA Forest Service scientists have found that the bugs are reducing the growth of kudzu by as much as 33% over its growing season. This is obviously a good aspect of the

in Georgia simply forever. These are the plants with which our Georgia birds and insects have evolved over thousands of years. This evolutionary relationship provides food sources for baby birds in the spring and fattens up the adult birds in the fall to get them through our winter. Non-native plants, meaning the plants we
Pest Management Handbook
Now Available from UGA
The 2012 Georgia Pest Management Handbook is now available from the University of Georgia. The 33rd Commercial Edition (Special Bulletin 28), published by the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, provides more than 800 pages of current information on selection, application and safe use of pest control chemicals around farms, homes, urban areas, recreational areas and other environments where pests may occur.
Special attention is given to cultural, biological, physical and other types of control for insects, diseases and weeds in agronomic crops such as grains, cotton and tobacco, as well as for commercial operations specializing in fruits, vegetables and ornamental horticulture production. Recommendations also are given for managing pests around livestock and aquatic environments.

have brought in from other countries and other regions of the USA, do not fill this role here in Georgia. In addition to being adapted to our local birds and wildlife these plants are also adapted to our Georgia climate! Once established, native plants don't need the TLC and extra water and food that the non-native plants demand.
Members of GNPS actively use native plants to restore habitat on public land, in parks, at schools and even along nature trails, not to mention in their own backyards. When you really think about it, it is amazing how much acreage in residential and urban areas has succumbed to invasion by exotic plants (think kudzu or ivy but know that privet and honeysuckle consume more of our Georgia acreage) and how much acreage outside of the city has been stripped of the native trees and flowers only to be replaced with the same identical landscaping plants you see almost all the way across our nation. Through their Restoration Committee GNPS helps neighbors and friends return their land to its natural state by putting back the native plants that once grew there. GNPS helps people acquire these native plants through its Plant Rescue Committee and by supporting nurseries that grow them.
Any member of GNPS can participate in a plant rescue. Plant rescues are
