Georgia Grown Member `Simply Southard' Uses

Ideal Location, Opportunity to Expand its Business

Margarie Southard started her business, Simply Southard, in Cumming, Georgia, as a place to find great homemade desserts; however, since her start in 2002, she's grown the business into much more.
Southard said her location had a lot to do with how her catering and bakery business expanded. A Weight Watchers program was in the space next door, and she saw the opportunity to provide great tasting, low calorie, low-fat desserts to its clientele. And, as an additional benefit

"My mom was borderline diabetic for a long time she really had to watch what she ate, so I started creating low-sugar desserts for her," Southard said. "But when people saw I made low-fat, lowcalorie desserts, they started calling me about diabetic-friendly desserts, too. I get a lot of calls for those desserts, especially for kids at risk of diabetes. Pediatricians now refer those kids and their families to me."
Today, Southard employs three parttime local workers, and Simply Southard is one of Georgia Grown's first Goldlevel members.
"I was born and raised in Cumming," Southard said. "I joined Georgia Grown because I think it's important that people know I'm from Georgia and so are my

Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black addressed those attending the National Agriculture Week kick-off in Atlanta last month. The event was hosted by Governor Deal and the Commissioner to recognize and celebrate Georgia's agricultural industry.
The event, which drew visitors from throughout the state, including members of the General Assembly, 4-H and FFA students, and representatives of various agricultural organizations, included the presentation of the 2012 Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award and the announcement of winners of the Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest.

Mobile Lab Extends Testing Capability

Of Dept.'s Fuels and Measures Division

The primary mission of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Fuel and Measures Division is to protect consumers when they purchase goods by volume or weight. One of the key responsibilities in this mission is the regulation of motor fuel quality.
"Although our Department has no

control over the price and supply of motor fuels, it does have a lot to do with ensuring the quality of these fuels," said Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Slow Cooker Italian Chicken

4 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 (16-oz.) jar pepperoncini peppers 1 envelope Good Seasons Italian Salad Dressing mix 1 envelope onion soup mix 1 tablespoon minced garlic

Place chicken breasts in slow cooker. Pour peppers and juice over chicken. Combine salad dressing mix and onion soup mix in small food processor or blender. Process until combined. Sprinkle over chicken and peppers. Add garlic and cook on low for 8 hours. Remove peppers and discard. Shred chicken with 2 forks; combine with broth until absorbed. Serve on buns or as a main dish.

Carol Ann Harper Chattahoochee Hills, Ga.

Testing Note: You may prefer less pepperoncini peppers, so either look for a smaller jar or use of the 16-oz. jar. As an alternative, omit the peppers and add 2 cups chicken broth.

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Andrea Stephens at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Product samples are analyzed for compliance with octane rating, volatility and numerous other standards of product quality and performance. Failure to meet quality specifications results in a "stopsale order," and the product is withheld from sale until it can be brought back up to standard.
In addition to gasoline and diesel fuel, the Department inspects aviation fuels and kerosene. Retail gas pumps, terminal and transport truck meters and liquid propane (LP) gas meters are tested to assure accurate delivery, and station signs are monitored to verify that advertised prices are the same as those on the pumps. Also, petroleum storage tanks are checked for potential water or contamination problems.
As a result of the Division's sampling and inspection program, Georgia

motorists have relatively few problems related to fuel quality, and the number of gasoline pumps tested out of tolerance has been minimal. That kind of quality control is important not only to gasoline consumers, but also to Georgia farmers who use propane gas and diesel in their farming operations.
Although fuel inspectors have the responsibility for their routine inspections, they give first priority to consumer complaints. Any suspected instance of adulterated fuel, inaccurate pumps or deceptive advertising is investigated immediately, usually within one working day.
If you have questions or concerns regarding fuel quality, contact the Fuel and Measures office at (404) 656-3605 in the Atlanta area, or 1-800-282-5852 tollfree from anywhere in Georgia.

Once a gas station pump has been inspected and approved for accuracy, the inspector places an official department seal on the pump. The seal shows the date of the approved inspection and provides the department's toll-free phone number so that consumers can report any problems they encounter with the accuracy of the pump after the inspection.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. While chefs routinely use the famous Vidalia onions raw or cooked in a variety of dishes from salads to desserts, a new icon makes it easier than ever for restaurant consumers to identify dishes that feature Georgia's most exclusive and internationally renowned agricultural treasure. The black and white image consists of the outline of an onion surrounding the letters VO.
The new image, akin to a heart icon signaling low-cholesterol dining options, is made available by the Vidalia Onion Committee and Georgia Department of Agriculture to restaurateurs who "Take the Vidalia Onion Pledge" on the Georgia Restaurant Association (GRA) website. The roster of all participating restaurants will be published by the GRA and also shared with Georgia Tourism, which will promote those restaurants as part of culinary- and agri- tourism initiatives.
By taking the pledge, restaurateurs agree to only label onions as Vidalia onions when they are authentic Vidalia

onions and no other type of onion. Taking the pledge does not prohibit use of any other onion varietals at the restaurant, only that an onion will never be labeled (with words and/or icon) as a Vidalia onion if it is not.
"The icon draws attention to Vidalia onions and the creative ways chefs work with this Georgia Grown product," said Karen Bremer, executive director of the GRA. "Whether diners are curious about Vidalia onions or already avid fans, the image gives subtle visual encouragement to try these dishes while creating a pathway to support local, seasonal foods when dining out. And by compelling consumers to sample these dishes, we can support local farmers and generate more revenue for our state, which will create more jobs. It's a win-win situation."
"Our farmers work extremely hard year-round to produce Vidalia sweet onions for harvest in spring and summer," said Wendy Brannen, executive director of the Vidalia Onion Committee. "We love

Pest Control Month
(Continued from Page 1) in their efforts to help prevent infestations in their homes and businesses. Termites and rodents can cause damage to property by their chewing. Cockroaches and rodents may transmit disease organisms and cockroach allergens may trigger asthma attacks. Mosquitoes, fleas and ticks can pose significant health threats when they bite. Stinging insects send multitudes of people to the emergency room each year. And of course many persons are mentally traumatized by the presence of bugs, such as ants and bed bugs, crawling throughout their property.
The Georgia Pest Control Association invites you to take action during the month of April to prevent pest infestations by following these steps:
Keep all food containers sealed. Keep kitchens clean by wiping surfaces and emptying garbage frequently. Keep trash containers clean and tightly closed, both indoors and out. Install and inspect tightly fitted screens over windows and doors. Eliminate sources of moisture and standing water. Seal entry points such as cracks and pipe openings around the foundation. Keep plants, shrubs and tree branches cut back away from the structure. Avoid leaving pet foods out for extended periods of time. If you see signs of pest activity or suspect an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional for help. Having that pest professional's truck parked in your driveway is a sign of good housekeeping and should never be an embarrassment for you. My grandmother always told me, "It is not a shame to get bugs, but it is a shame to keep them!" Georgia Pest Control Association is here to serve your needs, whether it be providing information, education or helping to locate a pest professional in your area.
