THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.

Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

Georgia FFA Brings Home the Gold From 85th National Convention

The Georgia FFA Association had a very successful trip to the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, last month, highlighted by 17 national winners and the election of the state's 14th national FFA officer.
Georgia brought home the American Star in Agribusiness, 10 national proficiency award winners, the high scoring individual in the national Livestock Evaluation career development event (CDE), four national Agriscience Fair winners, the Outstanding Middle School FFA chapter in the nation and the 20122013 National FFA Secretary, Kalie Hall, of Franklin County. The 2011-2012 National FFA Officer team presided over the convention, including National FFA Vice President, Cain Thurmond of Jefferson. Thurmond presented his Retiring

Address entitled "Home" at the convention's fourth general session.
"The number of national winners from Georgia, as well as the election of one of our own as national secretary, demonstrate we have an outstanding group of students who will be the agricultural leaders of the future," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black. "My congratulations to all of those students honored at this year's national convention."
Bradley Weaver, a member of the Dawson County FFA chapter in Dawsonville, Georgia, was named the 2012 American Star in Agribusiness. Weaver earned this recognition by

developing his Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program over the past seven years. Bradley's Pumpkin Patch has developed from a roadside stand into a thriving agribusiness that markets not only pumpkins, but Christmas trees, daffodils, peanuts, and daylilies, in addition to providing a landscaping service. From the field of 3,245 American FFA Degree recipients in 2012, Weaver was one of four named as a finalist for American Star in Agribusiness. Weaver is only the fourth Georgian to ever be named an American Star. Bradley's advisor is Mr. Reggie Stowers.
In addition to Weaver, two other

Eligible FFA members must also have met other agricultural education, scholastic and leadership requirements. The "Bradley" brand was born in 1995 when Weaver, at age five, started selling pumpkins from a roadside stand to earn money for college. At age eight, he liberated a section of his family's barn and turned it into a gift shop. That young, entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well today as this college junior and FFA member continues to own and operate eight businesses that bear his name. "Through my experiences, I have developed a strong work ethic and ability to work steadily until a job is done to the satisfaction of the customer," Weaver said.

Collin Jenkins of Roopville, Ga., was the 2012 State of Georgia winner of a $1,000 scholarship from Bonnie Plants for the OS cross cabbage he grew, which weighed 35 pounds. A national plant wholesaler based in Alabama, Bonnie Plants supplies retail stores all over the United States. The company started the 3rd Grade Cabbage Program in 2002 with a mission to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people. Each year, it distributes more than one million free cabbage plants to 3rd Grade classrooms across the country and awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each state. Teachers submit a class winner and a child is chosen by each state's Department of Agriculture. Collin, accompanied by his family, received his scholarship from Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and Bonnie Plants during a ceremony at Roopville Elementary School November 13.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Compost
(Continued from Page 12)
improves both the physical structure and the fertility of the soil.
For example, adding organic matter to sandy soil increases the ability of the soil to retain moisture and nutrients. When added to heavy clay soil, compost helps to improve drainage and keeps the soil from being so compacted.
If you build and maintain a pile correctly, you should not have problems with odors, rodents or pets. But it's a good idea to check your local ordinances to make sure there are no restrictions against composting before starting your compost pile.

Fall Perfect for Planting
Landscape Shade Trees
The glaring heat of this summer may have you convinced that you need more shade in your yard. And fall is the perfect time to plant trees to create that needed shade.
Fall planting allows the trees' root systems to become established and supply the moisture needed for next spring's growth. This way your trees will get off to a great start.
Many ornamental trees give us a bountiful display of spring or summer flowers, too. Specimen trees attract attention because of their unique form and beauty.
So how do you select the right tree for the right place?
First, ask what you really need in your landscape.
Do you need shade over the patio from a large tree with wide-spreading branches? Do you need a splash of color you can see in the far meadow from the deck? Do you have the perfect place for an accent tree?
Next, do you have the space you need? In particular, look at the room needed for the spread of the branches. Mature trees often reach out 20 to 30 feet in all directions, requiring a 40- to 60-foot open area. Are there wires overhead? Wires limit the head room and may limit you to small trees or no trees at all. What about underground utilities and drain fields? Don't plant trees directly over these. Third, consider the strength of the wood and pest resistance of the trees. Look for pest-resistant trees that require little maintenance. Finally, how about growth rate? Are you planting for your own gratification? Or can you plant trees for a future generation? Here's a short list of great, fast-growing trees that can fulfill your landscape needs. These are just a few of the lesser-known trees you can plant in the fall. * The red maple called October Glory is fast-growing with good, green summer foliage and bright red leaves in late fall. It's dependable year after year. * Shumard oak grows faster than most trees and has a nice, broad, oval crown. It has shiny, dark-green summer foliage and russet-red fall color. It quickly becomes a large, stately tree. * Willow oak leaves are long and willow-like. It's a tough oak for moist or dry sites and makes a dependable large shade tree. * Lacebark elm loses its bark in small, puzzle-like pieces, creating a delicate pattern on the trunk and larger branches. The small leaves are glossy green and pestresistant. This tough tree is extremely drought-tolerant. It's a dependable, fastgrowing shade tree. The fall color of trees' foliage greatly livens our landscapes. Some of the most

agricultural producers must register with the Georgia Department of Agriculture underneath the Georgia Agriculture Tax Exemption program which goes into effect January 1, 2013. At this time, all other agriculture exemptions will be repealed. If you are an agricultural producer and would like to receive this tax exemption, you must qualify as Qualified Agriculture Producer in Georgia through the Georgia Department of Agriculture. There are two ways you can apply; the first one is visit our website at www.agr.georgia.gov with the online application, or you print off the application and mail it into the Department. You can also pick up your applications at your local Farm Bureau office.

couple of shovelfuls of manure. A light layer of soil can be added. The best activator for compost is old compost. Continue to alternate layers, and as each is complete, water it thoroughly. Keep the pile moist, but not soggy.
Compost is ready to use when the material turns dark and becomes crumbly. Five to eight months normally will be required to finish compost, depending on the material used and the heat and moisture available during the composting period. Apply compost to garden soil at the rate of four bushels per 100 square feet.
Chopping or shredding compost materials into small pieces is not necessary, but it will hasten the rate of decomposition. When added to a lawn or garden, the partially decomposed organic material

I need an easy recipe for baking apples. What apple varieties are best?
Baked apples are one of the simplest desserts/side dishes. Core or slice apples in half. Add a drizzle of honey or some brown sugar, dabs of butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg and bake at 350 F. for about 20 minutes or until soft.
A few varieties recommended for baking include Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Jonathon, Limbertwig, Albemarle Pippin, Stayman Winesap, York Imperial, Detroit Red and Ozark Gold. The farmer at a Georgia orchard or farmers market may offer more suggestions for their best varieties for baking.
You may want to visit a kitchen store to look at some apple cookers specially made pottery bowls that enable you to cook individual apples in the same dish you serve them in. They make for easy cleanup and an attractive presentation. There are even some microwave cookers.
If you have questions about services or products regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, visit our website at www.agr.georgia.gov or write us at 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Room 218, Atlanta, GA 30334 or e-mail us at arty.schronce@agr.georgia.gov.

"We average $100 million in sales a year so we're a big tenant at the Atlanta State Market. We have an investment here. I joined to support [Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black] and because this program is a part of Georgia," Scott said. "The revitalization of Georgia Grown is a nice, fresh change and these are positive things that we want to support."
General Produce was founded in 1960 and, in the past decade, has experienced a 120 percent growth in terms of annual revenue. The company has a full-time staff dedicated to food safety, and General Produce is on the leading edge with product traceability since 1996, boasting as a PrimusLabs Platinum vendor with scores in the high 90's at all their warehouses (out of a possible 100). Additionally, ProducePro software helps the company manage sales and inventory, which has facilitated its considerable growth over the years, while online orders have also driven their continued evolution.
To this day, the company continues to be an actively involved family-owned operation. The Folds family owns the company while Randy Lineberger serves as Vice President, along with five additional support staff including Scott.
