Destinations this Fall
The temperatures are starting to drop and the leaves have just begun to turn here in Georgia. While the first official days of the fall are upon us and harvest season is
wrapping up for many farmers across the state, a whole new set of events and activities are going strong. Falling under the "agriculture" umbrella, agritourism in Georgia is a growing and vibrant industry with new businesses and activities cropping up in all corners of the state each year. Not only are all these activities a fun and unique way to enjoy all that Georgia

American Label Packs Georgia Grown Goodness
Company supplies label, container, shipping and other packaging products made to order for Georgia agribusinesses

Most of the agricultural goods grown and produced in Georgia never stay in Georgia. Whether by rail, ship, truck or air, Georgia goods are distributed across the globe, every day.
Meeting the needs of Georgia's producers for quality shipping goods is key for American Label, one of the Georgia Grown program's newest Founders Circle members.
"I grew up in Georgia in the farming business," said American Label President Terry Watts, who is a fourth-generation farmer on his mother's side, third generation on his dad's. "I know agriculture, even though I left the farm to go into the packaging business. When I bought American Label a year ago, I knew that our roots in agriculture would be our strength.
"We positioned ourselves strategically to be a good fit for producers, because producers in Georgia range from small to great big," he added. "Each has different

product mixes, different needs. We know how to support the industry because it's such a part of our own heritage."
The company is focused on growing its packing and shipping business for Georgia growers small and large.
"We're a good size to accommodate growers in the state of any size," Watts said. "If it needs to get packed and shipped, we can do it. Rigid, custom packaging, labels, specialty packaging for strange sizes and shapes--you name it, we make it."
Produce lugs and shipping boxes, food and beverage containers, flexible plastic packaging for dried fruit--nothing is out of their capability, Watts said.
"We also produce bottles, food- and non-food grade labels, caps, boxes, neck hangers and shippers for the state's growing wine industry," he added.
Director of Sales David Williamson agreed, but said their agricultural roots take the firm's offerings even further.

Farmers Advised of New GATE Program

The Georgia Agriculture Tax Exemption (GATE) is a new program created by Georgia HB386, which offers qualified agriculture producers a sales tax exemption on agricultural equipment and production inputs. This program will replace the Agricultural Certificate of Exemption (ST-A1) form.
Effective January 1, 2013, qualified

agricultural producers will be required to have a tax exemption certificate in order to purchase specified products without being charged sales tax on those items.
How does it work? Qualified agricultural producers must submit their new tax exemption certificate to their retailer in order to receive a sales

"Like Terry, I've got generations of Georgia farm families behind me," he said. "So when I joined the company, we expanded our offerings so that we now do agricultural tags for fertilizers and other products. We produce custom work for companies that provide ag animal veterinary products, such as horse arthritis and colic remedies or chicken pecking deterrents. We're equipped to produce containers and packaging that meet and exceed USDA and FDA requirements for these products."
With a production facility in Chickamauga and sales office just over the Georgia line in Chattanooga, both Watts and Williamson say their goal is to become partners in production with Georgia agribusinesses.
"At our core, we're problem-solvers," Watts said. "We want to have a positive impact on our clients' bottom lines and deliver quality, speed and price to make that happen. Our customer service is exceptional, and our entire product supply chain is proudly U.S.-based, which means lower transportation costs and local jobs and economic growth. We're the neighborhood source for packaging with international quality, and we want to help Georgia businesses grow."

Agriculture Department Unveils New Magazine, Georgia Grown
Comprehensive guide promotes agriculture to consumers, businesses and political leaders

Commissioner Gary W. Black announced the unveiling of the Georgia Grown magazine October 17 at the 35th annual Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition. The 105 page magazine is a comprehensive guide to Georgia's farms, forests, food and exports, and serves as a synopsis for state legislators, business leaders and consumers about the impact of agriculture on the state's economy.
"This magazine will illustrate to readers across the state the importance of agriculture to Georgia's economy" said Black. "In Georgia Grown, you will find information regarding our state's top commodities, new technological advances in agriculture and see the importance that agribusiness plays in our state."
The intention of the magazine, which is free to the public, is to educate Georgia consumers about their food source and give a voice to the state's farmers. The magazine features original photography, reader-

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.

Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Perry, Ga., Oct. 4-14, was a great success with a total attendance of 445,395 for the 11 days. That's an increase of 1.2 percent or 5,464 more people than last year.
"The 23rd Georgia National Fair was the second best Fair in our history," said Randy Moore, executive director. "It was a very strong fair," he added. In 2010 the fair had a total attendance of 465,053.
Once again, Fairgoers proved they like

reports from Reithoffer Midway indicate the 2012 Georgia National Fair will be their top grossing Fair in the company's entire history.
Preliminary sales reports from food vendors show that revenues will at least equal and may possibly surpass last year's record. For many food vendors, their sales were higher than any other fair. The 2011 food sale revenues totaled $2.7 million.

Halloween Means Pumpkin Time in Ga.

If you've waited until the very last minute, it's time to head to the pumpkin patch, roadside stand or grocery store to pick out your pumpkin, as Georgians celebrate Halloween.
For some folks, the search for the perfect pumpkin has become almost as important as scouring the woods for the perfect Christmas tree. Pumpkins come in many shapes and sizes, and preferences vary.
The miniature has become popular among those who dabble in decorative

figures to the Fair; they pay a space rental fee. The 2011 commercial space rental fee was $386,000. (The 2012 figures were not available as of presstime).
"While the Reaves Arena concerts were good shows, ticket sales did not perform to our expectations," Moore said. "We will begin work immediately to improve the quality offered at our concerts."
Moore stated further: "Overall, we had a very good performance of this year's edition of the Georgia National Fair."
The Georgia National Fair will return to Perry October 3-13, 2013. The 24th Fair's theme will be "There's Magic in the Fair!"

select their own pumpkins. This is akin to the stroll in the forest looking for the right Christmas tree or the Thanksgiving morning turkey hunt for the day's main course.
Most of the pumpkins grown in Georgia are in the northern third of the state, although there are a few south Georgia growers. Plant viruses and insect pressure make growing pumpkins in south Georgia hard to accomplish.
Many of the pumpkins sold in Georgia were grown up north and in the Midwest. Some come from states such as Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, and North Carolina.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety Harris Blackwood have launched the second annual "Improving Georgia's Yield Behind the Wheel" campaign to draw attention to the need for safety on the state's rural roads.
"As our farmers are working to bring in this year's crop, we want to remind Georgians of farmers' increased presence on the roadways," Black said. "While traveling, we urge you to be mindful of tractors and other farm equipment sharing the same roadways and to take extra precaution."

Rural roadways have proven more fatal to Georgians than even metropolitan Atlanta highways. Deadly crashes in rural areas are all too frequently attributed to speed on the often open roads. Likewise, vehicles approaching farm equipment at a speed of 55 MPH can travel the length of a football field within seconds, and have little time to react.
"Nothing is more enjoyable than a fun ride on a country road, but approaching a slow-moving farm vehicle at a high rate of speed could prove deadly," Blackwood

said. "Slowing down to 20 MPH for two miles should only add six minutes to a commute. That's about the time it takes to sit at two stop lights, and it's just a drop in the bucket to the time you could lose in a crash on a rural road."
Georgians can improve their yield behind the wheel by following a few simple tips travelling Georgia's rural roadways:

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 6565584.

We recently pulled numerous frames of purple honey from our hives. What could cause this? We live west of Atlanta in Douglas County.
The honeybee experts we consulted said it is probably kudzu honey, especially if it has a grape soda smell. Kudzu blooms in late summer with purple blossoms that smell of grapes. Titi (Cyrilla racemiflora) can sometimes lead to purple honey and an unfavorable condition for honeybees called "purple brood." However, titi is primarily a coastal shrub and is unlikely to be the source of purple honey in Douglas County.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Choose the Right Kennel for Your Family Pet

(Continued from Page 12)

Page 11
GATE Program
(Continued from Page 1)

drive up to the kennel, how does its appearance strike you? Are the grounds neat, well-maintained, and inviting? Kennels that look good on the outside are more likely to be well-run on the inside.
Ask to see where the animals are kept. You have a right, as a consumer, to know what you are getting for your money. And viewing the facility first-hand will give you the opportunity to see exactly where your pet will be staying. Inspect the facility with the idea of your pet's safety in mind.
Are the runs or other enclosures safe? Is there any torn fencing or other sharp objects exposed that could injure an animal? Is the facility itself fenced, or even double-fenced? What type of flooring does the facility have? Most commercial kennels have concrete floors, but not all. Are the animals well-separated from each other? Is there an exercise area, and if so, how is the exercise area managed? Are the runs well-lighted? Can staff members easily view the animals?
Be sure to check for cleanliness, too. It is possible to house large numbers of dogs and cats in confined spaces without any odor of urine, feces or "wet dog" smell. Check for standing water as well. Runs and kennel areas should be well-drained and properly ventilated so they dry quickly, leaving no water for pets to stand or lie in. Proper ventilation or air circulation through the use of exhaust fans and air conditioning is important year-round.
Some kennels have indoor/outdoor runs; some have only indoor runs; some have only outdoor runs. In each case, adequate shelter must be provided. There should be some way for the animal to take shelter from wind, rain, sun and cold. Adequate heating is important, too. Keep your pet in mind when considering this. Small house dogs accustomed to being indoors will need more shelter than a dog that spends a lot of time outdoors.
Check to make sure the kennel you are considering has a proper smoke alarm and fire extinguisher.
Ask to see where the food is prepared as well. All good kennels will have a refrigerator. Some foods and medicines must be refrigerated, and this fact must be considered by the kennel. Check to see that dry food is stored in airtight, rodent-proof
Pumpkin
(Continued from Page 6)
with vines, you might want to give it a whirl.
For harvest near Halloween or Thanksgiving, don't plant pumpkins until early to late June, depending on the variety. Never plant until danger of frost has passed.
Pumpkin varieties vary in size and color. To grow your own, start by selecting the right variety for your use.
It takes proper care throughout the season to grow the long-awaited "big orange orb" you will cherish until it's ladled into the pie crust or melts into the compost pile.
It's virtually impossible to grow competitively large pumpkins in the Georgia climate. Limit your competition to local and state fairs.
How do you pick the proper pumpkin? Choose one with a hard rind and a dull color. Declining vines indicate a ripe pumpkin, too. Pick pumpkins before frost and leave at least three to four inches of stem on the fruit.
One caution: Southern-grown pumpkins usually can't be stored as long as those grown in other areas.

containers, and that cleaners, disinfectants, and other chemicals are stored away from food and pets.
Staff
Consider also the people who will be caring for your pet. Are they friendly, courteous, and direct in answering your questions? Evasive answers or a reluctance to allow you to look around may indicate there is something to hide. Ask about staff members' experience, training and certification. Do staff members ask you the proper questions, such as proof of vaccinations, feeding habits, and behavioral quirks (such as digging, nipping, or fence climbing) of your pets? This is for the safety of everyone -- your pet, the staff and other animals being housed at the kennel. Ask what happens in an emergency such as escape or illness. Does the kennel have a plan of action in such an emergency? Also, ask if the kennel has an evacuation plan in case of a disaster. Remember that accidents can happen even in the best of kennels. Finally, ask what type and frequency of monitoring the animals receive.
The Pet Owner's Responsibilities
As the pet owner, you have certain responsibilities, too. You are responsible for providing proof of vaccinations and any pertinent medical information. Check to see that each animal has proper identification. You will have to supply your pet's medications and you may supply food, too. Most kennels will allow you to bring toys and favorite bedding for your pet.
Keep in mind that the kennel is a

business with set hours that is open to the public. Observe these hours. Plan ahead so that dropping off and picking up your pet is not a last-minute errand. Also be aware that many kennels fill up quickly, especially during holiday seasons and the summer, so it is important to make reservations ahead of time to ensure that your pet gets a space.
Finally, do take the time to do a little research and "comparison shopping." You are the one responsible for your pets' wellbeing. By investigating the kennel before you leave your pet, you can know how your pet will be treated while you are away. This eliminates worrying about your pet when you are too far away to do anything about it. You can relax, knowing that your pet is getting the best care available.

and other similarly related income is valued at more than $640 million annually in our state. This includes both ag-based and nature-based tourism activities.
On behalf of the Department of Agriculture, I'd like to encourage every Georgian to get out and about this fall season to help celebrate Georgia's unique agricultural bounty. There are so many great opportunities for consumers to get right in the middle of a family farm and experience it; in return, your children (and yes, even us adults) can gain valuable agricultural and educational experiences while enjoying time together. From food and festivals to a variety of events, Georgia is blessed with an abundance of things to do, eat, see and experience throughout the fall season.
From the coastline to the mountain, pick-your-own farms have opened up their pumpkin patches and apple orchards for a fun day out in the field selecting your very own Georgia Grown produce to help get your fall season started the oldfashioned way. While you're out and about, try your family's skills at winding through a corn maze, or hop on a hayride through the beautiful Georgia countryside.
Be sure to continue supporting local farmers markets as many are staying open through the fall months. There are still plenty of Georgia Grown items available, including apples and pears that are now in peak season, along with Georgia's locally grown winter greens like chard, mustard and kale, plus squash, carrots and potatoes.
In this issue of the Market Bulletin (see page 3), you'll find a list of all Georgia Grown members who are offering

agritourism events throughout the fall. Online at www.GeorgiaGrown.com, consumers can find even more information by selecting the "Activities" page for a section including different pick-your-own farm listings, farmers markets that are still in full swing and other agritourism

opportunities, including a growing number of wineries throughout the state that are open for adult tours.
Thanks for reading the Market Bulletin, and we'll see you out and about enjoying Georgia's agritourism opportunities throughout this wonderful fall season!

For Farmers:
Georgia law requires operators of slow moving vehicles to place a reflector on any machine that travels the road slower than 25 MPH. Always point the triangle reflector upwards, keep the emblem clean to maximize reflectivity and replace the emblem when it fades, normally every 2-3 years.
Mark the edges of tractors and machines with reflective tape and reflectors. Consider installing retrofit lighting on older machinery to increase visibility.
Turn on your lights, but turn off spotlights when going onto the road.
Avoid the highway during rush hour

Choose the Right Kennel for Your Family Pet

If you own a dog or cat, chances are there have been times when you've had to board them at a professional kennel. There are hundreds of kennels throughout Georgia, ranging in scope from small, backyard facilities to large, state-of-the-art operations with large staffs. Prices may fluctuate, depending on the level of service and how many "extras" the facility offers. Many kennels have grooming areas and some offer obedience training as well.
Every kennel in Georgia is required to obtain a license from the Georgia Department of Agriculture in order to

operate. When considering a kennel, ask to see the current kennel license issued by the Department.
So, how do you know which type is best for you and your pet, and which type should be avoided? When you leave your pet at a kennel, how can you be sure it will receive the best care possible? As a public

service, the Market Bulletin offers the following tips to consider when choosing a kennel.

Georgia's Centennial Farm Families Honored at Georgia National Fair in Perry

Each year, farms continuously operating for more than 100 years are recognized by the Georgia Centennial Farms Program.
The 2012 Georgia Centennial Farm Awards program was held Friday, October 5, 2012, at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. The ceremony began with a reception followed by the awards presentation. Awards were presented by Georgia Centennial Farms Committee Chair Steven Moffson. Opening remarks were given by: Director Dr. David Crass, Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources; Director Randy Moore, Georgia National Fair; Commissioner Gary Black, Georgia Department of Agriculture; Commissioner Mark Williams, Georgia Department of Natural Resources; and Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

Recognition is given to the farm owners through one of three distinguished awards. The Centennial Heritage Farm Award honors farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Farm Award does not require continual family ownership, but farms must be at least 100 years old or more and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Family Farm Award recognizes farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are not listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
