Georgia farmers are among the most creative and innovative people in this great state. Our farmers are both survivors and diversifiers and they are serious business men and women carrying very sharp pencils. Agritourism is the vehicle through which many farmers are multifocusing their sweat equity, not only to sustain the legacy and lifestyle of the family farm, but also to create alternative sources of revenue. Agritourism is the marriage of Georgia's largest industries,
but it has morphed into so much more. It is the farmer inviting school children and the community to learn about where food
comes from and how animals are cared for. It is the young couple teaching their children to work hard in a roadside organics market on the busy end of their garden. It is the son or daughter

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible,
on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market
Bulletin must have had a negative
Coggins test within past 12 months.
Negative reports are valid for 12 months
from the sample date. A copy of this test

of a negative Coggins test before
purchasing any equine.
Any
falsification of Coggins tests can result
in fines and/or suspension of

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

breeders the information they need to pick a bull to mate with their cows.
Misztal's method is the first of its kind to integrate information from databases containing genotypic information on individual animals and observed information about those animals to recommend future breeding matches.
"It is difficult to run both of those types of information together, and he has developed a one-step method for doing so," said Keith Bertrand, director of the UGA Department of Animal and Dairy
Sciences. "Everyone is coming here to learn about it and to pick his brain about building these kinds of programs."
Animal rating and breeding groups, such as the Holstein Association, have used databases full of production information for years; however, the addition of the genetic information is relatively new.
Breeders can look at the growth rates and milk production records of individual animals to evaluate the breeding value of their parents. However, if a breeding
animal doesn't have many offspring, it's hard to evaluate them for breeding. If information about the animal's genetic make-up is available, it can help animal breeders in the evaluation process.
"Where the (genomic information) really helps is when an animal is very young and you don't have much information about his progeny," Bertrand said. "This genomic information is good for providing a more accurate prediction of how an animal's progeny will perform."
Misztal, who first studied computer engineering before continuing his studies in animal science, created his first computer package in 1986. It was used worldwide for genetics improvement of major species.
In the future the algorithms that Misztal uses in the breeding program also may be used for medical research and other genomic research.
Misztal is the author of 146 journal papers and more than 200 other publications. He has conducted research

"They never owned a piece of ground but made wonderful gardens and crops each year," says Jennings, who still loves to garden and grows herbs in pots around his pool. "They lived a wonderful, peaceful and happy life on a farm. I learned how to work a garden with my grandmother and never lost that love for the land."
Jennings' customers now include golf courses, athletic fields, commercial landscape companies, commercial retail outlets and homeowners. Jennings Turf is the exclusive sod supplier to Home Depot and Pike Nurseries in the Southeastern United States and is an industry leader in sales of washed sprigs and sod. The company also grew the turf for the 2005 Super Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.
A devout Georgia Bulldog, Jennings supports turf grass research at UGA and other universities. Jennings Turf is the foundation grower for grasses developed by UGA such as Sea Isle 1, Sea Isle 2000 and Sea Isle Supreme.
"We have developed and are developing many grasses for the future that have great salt tolerance and water efficiencies," he says. "People enjoy making their lawns look good, and it's important to them. We want to help them use less water and still maintain a great lawn."

AG SEEd FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

continuing to look for niches in the agricultural market to fill. Now he is expanding his operations beyond Georgia's borders into South America, Mexico and Canada. Most of his 1,500 acres of turf grass are in Georgia, but he also has a farm in La Paz, Mexico, that produces grass for the golf course market.
Despite his expansion into other countries, Jennings, like many Georgia growers, is concerned about the nation's food supply being outsourced and is moving to fill this niche by producing food crops.
"I joined Georgia Grown because I am expanding into the fruit and vegetable industry," says Jennings, who has planted 300 acres of wild cultivated blueberries on Prince Edward Island in Canada. His plans also include operations in Georgia. "I want to take advantage of the Georgia Grown program."

Fantastically Americana, it is sweepingly broad and in Georgia, cloudily defined necessitating the need for this association. It is time that Georgia, now among 40 states with organized Agritouism Associations, highlight agritourism as a growing market segment in its economy.
The Georgia Agritourism Association (GAA) is operator led and enthusiastically working with the fine folks in Commissioner Gary Black's office, the Tourism Division of the Department of Economic Development and a host of supporting agencies. The mission of the GAA is to facilitate economic growth derived from increased tourism and profitable agribusiness. We do this through advocacy, education, networking and marketing. GAA promotes and enables Georgia's agritourism enterprises, educates and informs its constituents on the value of agritourism, and encourages the highest standards of hospitality and business practices. You can bet that the GAA is busy getting this done. We are traversing the state speaking about agritourism. The GAA will host its third workshop on July 12th at Jaemor Farms to learn about taking produce from the field to the market. We hosted a fabulous state
conference in January in Savannah and we are planning now for 2013. Most recently, we participated in the Georgia Grown Farmer's Showcase at the State Farmers Market and GAA had the honor of presenting important issues to the Georgia Rural Development Council in June. Our hard work has just begun. To

Savannah Farmers Market Celebrates
Summer Season with Festive Event
Georgia's climate and long growing season enable farmers to produce a variety of fruits and vegetables from spring to fall and the state farmers' markets of the Georgia Department of Agriculture provide a great place to shop for these fresh, locally-grown products.
The Savannah State Farmers Market held its annual Summerfest Saturday, June 23, to celebrate the summer growing season and encourage consumers to visit the facility to purchase locally grown produce and to sample products from local producers.
Approximately 1,500 people attended the event which also included cooking demonstrations and activities for children.
"We celebrate Summerfest to encourage both farmers and consumers to come out and enjoy our market," said manager Rita Davis. The market also is a state certified public weigh station for trucks of all types and it houses the Georgia Department of Agriculture
(Continued on Page 6)
Consumers at the Savannah Market Summerfest were able to meet and greet local farmers and vendors. Buying directly from the vendor at a farmers market puts the consumer in touch with where the product really comes from.
