Springer Mountain Farms Raises the Bar for Natural Chicken Production
Springer Mountain Farms is a family owned business located in the hills of Northeast Georgia that has been raising chickens for 50 years. In the early days the founders began raising chickens and selling them from the back room of their grocery store. Despite these humble beginnings, they had a dream to build a company founded on strong values and close relationships within the community.
"While a lot has changed for Springer Mountain Farms over the years, those
original core beliefs of strong values and close relationships have never wavered," said Dale Faunce, marketing director of Springer Mountain Farms. "Without our farmers, Springer Mountain Farms would not be the great chicken that it is today. The family farmers who raise our chickens are sometimes third-generation Georgia farmers with up to 40 years of experience raising great quality chickens."
That dedication to keeping Springer Mountain Farms poultry raised in
Georgia by Georgia poultry producers now has led to the company's Gold membership in Georgia Grown.
"We joined Georgia Grown years ago in its first iteration," Faunce said. "We've been proud to display the Georgia Grown logo on our product in the past and still are. We look forward to seeing the new program grow to benefit all Georgia agriculture."
Springer Mountain chicken starts with its growers' commitment to raising poultry without hormones, steroids or antibiotics. An all-vegetarian diet keeps Springer Mountain Farms chickens healthy and is, Faunce said, a prime reason why they taste so good. All the care and attention given in the production process is the reason Springer Mountain

Commissioner Leads Trade Delegation to Israel
Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black led a trade delegation to Israel May 13 - 18. The group was comprised of 12 Georgians representing a cross section of the state's production agriculture.
Sponsored and paid for by the Israeli Consulates office in Atlanta, the trip was designed to build relations and enhance trade opportunities between Georgia and Israel. The primary focus was to visit the 18th Annual International Agricultural Exhibition in Tel Aviv (Agritech) where delegates attended high level forums and round table discussions demonstrating the latest in agricultural innovations. Two days of the trip were designated for agriculture-related tours, including milk and poultry production, water recycling and utilization, irrigation management, and fruit and vegetable production. Due to its climate and terrain, Israel's technological advancements have been spurred out of necessity. Israel has one of the most sophisticated water and irrigation networks in the world.
Commissioner Black is shown with (left) Israeli hosts Asaf Segev, Cadet with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and (right) Zvi Herman, Minister of Agricultural & Science Affairs, sharing cotton- and peach-themed Southern Proper ties. In the background is an Israeli grocery chain where the group visited to compare the food buying experience to that of the U.S.
Farms was the first producer of poultry in the country to be "American Humane Certified". Veterinarians are on-farm to ensure healthy birds, and before a chicken house is ever built the soil is tested for residue, potential run off, and any environmental impact on wildlife. Onstaff specialists also continually conduct environmental tests to meet and exceed EPA standards for environmental protection. The company currently employs 4,500 fulltime workers and a few part-time workers at its operations in Northeast, Georgia, to keep the plant and property as healthy as the birds themselves.
"Our roots are here," Faunce continued. "We have always been and will always be a Georgia producer, involved and committed to our local communities. We're proud of our heritage and want our friends and neighbors all over Georgia to know that the nation's most cutting-edge chicken product is produced right here."

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by
telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. While crust is baking, melt another 2 tablespoons of margarine in microwave. When melted, add remaining tablespoon of apricots and the apricot jam; stir to mix. Set aside. In a small nonstick skillet, melt remaining 2 tablespoons of margarine, pour beaten eggs into pan and cook over medium heat just till scrambled. When crust is done, brush with the melted margarine apricot mixture, then sprinkle cheddar cheese over pizza, reserving a little to sprinkle on top of eggs. Scoop scrambled eggs around the edge of pizza crust and sprinkle cheese over the eggs. Place crumbled bacon around pizza. Place pan back into oven for about 2 minutes to melt cheese. appropriate fungicide, thoroughly coating new growth and flower buds. Several applications may be needed throughout the growing season to keep powdery mildew controlled.
Sooty mold is a fungus that affects crepe myrtles, as well as azaleas and gardenias. It appears as a black coating on the foliage. Sooty mold grows on the sugary substance (called honeydew) that is secreted by aphids and whiteflies. This fungus is unattractive and blocks sunlight to the leaves. The way to control sooty mold is to control aphids and whiteflies by spraying with an insecticide that is recommended for controlling these pests.
If you applied fertilizer to your garden in early spring, most of it likely has leached from the soil by now. Side-dress vegetables with approximately one-fourth cup fertilizer per three feet of row. If you are growing vegetables in wide beds, broadcast the fertilizer over the bed at the rate of one-half cup per square yard; however, be sure to wash the particles from the foliage to prevent fertilizer burn. Feed annual and perennial flowers with about one-half cup of fertilizer (5-10-10 or similar analysis) per square yard of bed.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

How to Submit
A Seed Sample
For Testing
Farmers should adhere to the following steps in order to have seed tested at a state seed laboratory:

2. Include the kind and variety, lot number or other identifying mark, along with your full name, address and telephone number. For greater efficiency in receiving your laboratory report, please include your e-mail address.
3. Mail seed samples in a cardboard box or similar container to protect them.
4. Allow 2-4 weeks for testing to be completed, depending on seed kind.
5. Farmers/consumers should send seed to: Georgia Department of Agriculture Tifton Laboratory Building, P.O. Box 1507, 3150 Hwy. 41 South, Tifton, GA 31793.
If you have any questions regarding seed testing, call (229) 386-3145 (Tifton). Information also is available on the Georgia Department of Agriculture website: www.agr.georgia.gov. When robins cock their heads to the side, it appears if they are listening for something on the ground. Actually, they are doing it so they can better spot their next worm or insect meal. They have monocular vision, which means their eyes are on the sides of the head, and each eye can be used independently. Contrary to popular belief, they don't hear the earthworms.

What is the difference between pickling cucumbers and salad cucumbers?
Pickling cucumbers hold up better during the canning and pickling process than the salad/slicing types; however, this does not mean they must be used
Dried herbs that have been on the shelf or in your kitchen cabinet lose their flavor over time. Growing your own or buying direct from a farmer is a good way to insure you are getting the best quality.
Numerous small farmers grow herbs and sell them at farmers markets, so check out the ones near you.
Many Georgia nurseries and garden centers carry sage and other herb plants. A regular green-leaved sage will do just fine for sausage-making and other recipes. The variegated varieties of sage will work, but those are selected for their color and eye-appeal rather than their flavor. Two varieties that come highly recommend for their flavor are `Grower's Friend' and `Hybrid #4.'
Harvest onions and Irish potatoes when two thirds of the tops have died down. Once harvested, store potatoes in a cool, dark location and store onions in a dry, airy place.
Regularly harvesting vegetables, such as beans, cucumbers, peas, okra and squash, will allow you to prolong production and enjoy the vegetables at the peak of their freshness.
You can improve your peach crop by thinning the trees about 70 days after full bloom; waiting longer will result in poorer fruit quality. Failure to thin the fruit could cause some of the tree limbs to break under the weight of the fruit. After the trees have finished dropping fruit naturally, thin them and leave the biggest and best-shaped
The Upper Ocmulgee River Resource Conservation and Development Council will offer a field day/workshop for small and beginning farmers and ranchers June 14, 9 a.m. 2:30 p.m., at Love is Love Farm and Berea Mennonite Farm in Atlanta.
Part of the Today's Sustainable Agriculture and Conservation Educational Series of workshops, participants will have the opportunity to observe organically grown crops in various stages of development along with a variety of production practices. Attendees also will receive information about eligibility requirements for USDA programs.
exclusively to make pickles. In fact, some people prefer them for fresh eating to those sold as salad or slicing cucumbers.
*** I bought a can of dried sage to make some sausage. It hardly had any flavor at all. Can I grow my own sage? Do farmers in Georgia grow sage? Are there any varieties of sage that have the best flavor?

Give your sage plenty of sun. It must have well-drained soil. Plant it in a large terra cotta container or in a raised bed. A raised bed made of concrete blocks is excellent because the blocks leach out lime that the sage likes.

If you have not yet planted summer bulbs, such as caladiums, cannas, and dahlias, you still have time to plant them throughout the month of June.
Tall flowers, such as dahlias, lilies, garden phlox and hollyhocks, will need staking before they are completely grown. If you don't like the idea of stakes detracting from the beauty of your flowers, try using some small twigs pruned from shrubs as your stakes. Stick the twigs into the ground around the flowers. Sunbelt Expo Field Day Highlights Latest in Ag Research, Innovation and Education
Research, innovation and education you'll hear these three words repeated time and again when describing what a visitor will find at the Sunbelt Ag Expo Field Day, scheduled Thursday, July 12, at Spence Field in Moultrie, Ga., site of the Sunbelt Expo. Field Day is an annual preview for the big show held in October and it's an opportunity for farmers to see the latest seed varieties, chemical applications, irrigation technology and precision ag technology - all in an applied research setting.
University of Georgia Extension Agents are partnering with the Sunbelt Expo to
crops planted are unlikely to share the same insect pests and disease-causing pathogens; intercropping also conserves the soil.
Irrigation Technology is a key factor in the success of many farming operations, especially in drought prone areas. As with most innovations in farming, the bottom line in determining whether or not to adopt this cost, and subsurface drip irrigation has proven no different. As irrigated acres continue to increase in the Southeast, growers are looking for the most efficient method, and they want to know how the cost of drip irrigation compares to the tried-
and-true center pivot system. Answering this question at Field Day will be BB Hobbs, a leader in the irrigation, waste water, and fertigation industries. The company specializes in large automated irrigation systems with a major emphasis

on drip irrigation and solid set irrigation. Advanced soil moisture sensors could lead to farmers adopting a more precise irrigation scheduling method. Flint River Soil and Water Conservation with Rad Yager will discuss the advantages of incorporating soil moisture sensors into irrigation management. Demonstrations on commercial farms show the potential for more efficient irrigation with sensors as compared to standard irrigation scheduling methods. Additionally they highlight the dramatic impact irrigation makes on crop

continue research and development of cucurbit (cantaloupe and watermelon) and cotton, grown in an intercropping management approach. Intercropping is the cultivation of two or more crops simultaneously on the same field. It also means the growing of two or more crops on the same field with the planting of the second crop after the first one has completed its development. The rationale behind intercropping is that the different
Three Georgia schools recently participated in the Feed My School for a Week program initiated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education.
Elementary schools in Bleckley, Colquitt and Hall counties were selected for the program last fall, and during April and May, served Georgia-grown products for a week to the students and faculty. In each of the counties, chapters of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation worked with GDA to supply local food and educate the students about farming.
Schools participating were: Bleckley County Elementary School; Norman Park Elementary, Colquitt County; and Wauka Mountain Multiple Intelligences Academy, Hall County.
Each of the schools also incorporated farm topics into the lesson plans to help students realize where the food they were eating originated.
The Feed My School for a Week program was designed to combat childhood obesity, increase agricultural awareness and create markets for Georgia farmers. Lunches at the three schools were to contain at least 75 percent Georgia-grown products.
"We've been pleased to see these three communities really take leadership of this program," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black. "This kind of effort would not have been possible without the Farm Bureau leaders in these communities and we appreciate all their assistance."
