Jud Turner Appointed Georgia EPD Director
The Board of Natural Resources has formally appointed Jud Turner the next director of the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Turner was nominated by Governor Nathan Deal to replace F. Allen Barnes, who resigned to return to work in the private sector.
Turner was former Governor Sonny Perdue's executive counsel and also served as the then governor's legal representative in negotiations with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service regarding drought operations at the federal reservoirs of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) and Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa (ACT) river basins.
Since serving as executive counsel, Turner has served both Governors Perdue and Deal as special executive counsel in negotiations between the states of Alabama, Georgia and Florida

My eucalyptus up and died for no reason. Why? I saw no signs of disease or any insect pests. I live in Atlanta.

For Time to Renew

Eucalyptuses, even the hardiest species, are not considered long-term plants in north Georgia. They have a difficult time adapting to our cold weather and temperature swings. Also, when it is warm and water is available they want to grow, even if it is a warm spell in December. When a freeze comes, it is damaged or killed because it is more susceptible to cold due to not being fully dormant. Root rots caused by fungi may have led to your plant's demise. Because the damage is happening underground, you don't always notice it.
A Georgia Department of Agriculture employee planted one of the hardiest species of eucalyptus 17 years ago in Atlanta. It survived and eventually reached past the top of a threestory building nearby. This summer it also died suddenly. While 17 years can be a long time, your grandchildren will be able to sit under the oak you planted this fall and perhaps even cut flowers from the peonies you planted. They'll probably have to plant their own eucalyptus, however.
All that being said, eucalyptuses, with their fragrant and silvery blue foliage, can be interesting and beautiful additions to a garden. Although they may not live as long as an oak or a peony, they can live as long as some other perennials and shrubs. Site yours in an area where it is protected from winter winds. Make sure it has well-drained soil. Mulch it. Do not give it any fertilizer or extra water in the fall you do not want to encourage it to be actively growing when a freeze comes.
Two of the hardiest species are believed to be Eucalyptus gunnii and Eucalyptus nivalis although there can be much variation considering the provenance of the seed or cuttings. Often no species name is given when a eucalyptus plant is sold. Lemon eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) is commonly sold in nurseries because of its lemony fragrance. It is

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Andrea Stephens at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

Rotisserie Lemon Chicken

1 whole chicken, cut up (or 3 pounds chicken breast or thighs) 1/4 cup olive oil grated zest of one lemon 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons finely sliced green onion, include tops 2 tablespoons Lemon & Herb seasoning

Place chicken in large zip top bag. Mix remaining ingredients in a small bowl, stirring until seasoning dissolves. Pour marinade over chicken. Seal bag, squeezing out excess air. Work the bag with hands to ensure that marinade goes inside the chicken. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, turning bag at least once.
Remove chicken from marinade. Place on spit, tie wings and legs securely to the body.
Cook according to manufacture's directions. Yield: 6 servings.

Gene A. Delapenia Harlem, Ga.

Note: If you do not have a rotisserie, simply marinate the chicken and grill over medium flame of charcoal or gas grill. Splitting the whole chicken in half or even quarters will decrease cooking time. This marinade is also great on shrimp or fish.

TESTING NOTE: For testing purposes, 3 pounds of chicken breast with bones was used and cooked on a gas grill for approximately 45 minutes, maintaining a grill temp. of 350 degrees.

All recipes have been tested for accuracy by Georgia Department of Agriculture home economists unless otherwise indicated.

USDA NRCS Announces Sign-Up Period

For Conservation Stewardship Program

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service recently announced the ranking period cut-off date for the Conservation Stewardship Program is January 13, 2012. Producers interested in CSP should submit applications to their local NRCS office by the deadline so that their applications can be considered during the first ranking period of 2012.
CSP is offered in all 50 states, and the Pacific and Caribbean areas through continuous sign-ups. The program provides many conservation benefits including improvement of water and soil quality, wildlife habitat enhancements and adoption of conservation activities that address the effects of climate change. Eligible lands include cropland, pastureland, rangeland, nonindustrial private forest land and agricultural land under the jurisdiction of an Indian tribe.
A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help potential applicants determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic

information about CSP eligibility requirements, contract obligations and potential payments. It is available from local NRCS offices and on the CSP Web page at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/ portal/nrcs/main/national/programs/finan

Are poinsettias poisonous?
Poinsettias are not poisonous. Every year someone starts this untrue rumor. You can buy a poinsettia and enjoy its beauty without worrying about it harming you or your pets. Place a poinsettia anywhere that could use some floral holiday cheer: churches, schools, kindergartens, nursing homes even as the centerpiece on your dining room table.
Here's another bit of good news. There are more varieties of poinsettias than ever. If you only think of red poinsettias, visit a nursery, garden center or florist. You can even find some new and unusual varieties at your grocery store. Poinsettias available from Georgia growers may be red, pink, salmon, white or cream. Some are speckled or marbled or have other patterns on their bracts (the colorful structures that look like petals.) A few even have variegated leaves. Other recent introductions include ones with serrated bracts or with curled bracts that make the poinsettia look like a giant rose.

According to their daughter Tammy Stafford, the Parkers produce sweet potatoes every year, but this year was exceptionally fruitful as they harvested bushels and bushels of large potatoes from only four to five small rows.
