Market Bulletin Makes
A Great Holiday Gift
If you are looking for a special holiday gift for someone, but you just can't seem to find the right one, then consider giving a gift subscription to the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin. The Bulletin, published by your Department of Agriculture, has something for everyone-- equipment ads for the farmer who is
looking for machinery, seed and supplies for those who like to garden, recipes for those who like to cook, and articles and notices for those who like to keep up with agricultural news and events.
Imagine, if your friends or loved ones had been receiving the Bulletin in recent weeks, they would have learned: Georgia is having its first olive harvest in a century, the Department has launched a new "Georgia Grown" campaign to promote Georgia agricultural products, 22 Georgia farms

Christmas Trees

Visit Choose and Cut Farms for Memorable Holiday Experience

The approaching Thanksgiving holiday signals the start of the Christmas tree sales season, and Georgia Christmas tree farms are busily preparing for the arrival of consumers ready to choose and cut their own Christmas trees.
"Selecting and cutting your own Christmas tree is the way to be sure you are getting the freshest tree possible," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. "I encourage all Georgians to support our state's Christmas tree growers and visit one of the choose and cut farms throughout the state this holiday season. And, even if you do not wish to cut your own tree, many of these farms have freshly cut trees ready for you to take home and enjoy."
When visiting a choose and cut farm, remember to respect the owner's property and adhere to posted signs or verbal instructions from the farm staff to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Also, particularly if you are carrying your children or grandchildren, be sure to take along a camera. Helping family members in selecting and cutting the family Christmas tree is an experience you may want to record and keep for years to come.
Before making the journey to a choose and cut farm, the Georgia Christmas Tree Association and National Christmas Tree Association offer the following information to help consumers in choosing
ag consumer line...
If I plant a buckeye, will it sprout and grow into a tree?
Buckeye trees will sprout from buckeye seeds. The familiar buckeye you may carry in your pocket for good luck is the seed of a buckeye tree. A buckeye that you have carried around for a long time is unlikely to sprout, however. You need to plant the seed as soon as possible after it falls from the tree or the husk opens. This is true for all the species of buckeyes.
If you have fresh buckeye seeds, sow them outdoors in the fall to a depth of about equal to their width. You may store them in the refrigerator in a moist medium such as vermiculite or damp paper towels in a sealed plastic bag or container and sow them in the spring.

the best tree to suit their needs and to keep trees fresh and beautiful throughout the holiday season.
Trees in the field look small when the sky is the ceiling. Be sure to measure the ceiling height in the room where the tree will be displayed so you will not buy a tree that is too tall for the space available.
Measure the width of the area of the room where the tree will be displayed. Most trees on tree farms are trimmed to an 80% taper. So a tree that is 10' tall will be 8' wide at the bottom. A tree that will fit in the room vertically may be entirely too big horizontally.
What decorating theme will be used?

See farm list pages 6-7
Some species have more open foliage, stiffer branches or longer needles. Research the characteristics of the different species on the NCTA website www.realchristmastrees.org, then find a farm near you that has the species you are looking for.
Most tree farmers keep their fields very well groomed, but there are some things that are beyond the farmer's control. Be careful of fire-ant mounds, tree stumps, an

occasional blackberry vine, uneven ground and sharp saws.
Go to the farm prepared for a day in the country. Wear comfortable shoes and old clothes. Bring rain gear if the weather is threatening. Also, have gloves for those in your party who will be cutting the tree and loading it. Many farms will prohibit pets; however, if a pet is allowed and must come

Deadline Approaches
For Economic Survey
In order to better understand the nature of Georgia's equine industry and the economic impact that it has on the state's economy, the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Equine has asked the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development to conduct an economic impact study of the equine industry in the state.
The study is funded by the Georgia Commodity Commission for Equine, which is administered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. All Georgia horse owners are strongly encouraged to participate in this survey. The response of horse owners is very important to the success of the study and the future of the equine industry in Georgia. All individual survey responses will be kept confidential. To participate in the survey, visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Equine2 011.
Deadline for submission of the survey is November 30, 2011.

Have a Safe, Healthy, Georgia Grown Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and as consumers across the state begin to check off their holiday lists of items in preparation for the big day November 24, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black reminds everyone to put food safety and local products at the top of the list.
"As we remember all we are thankful for on Thanksgiving Day, one of the main
focuses of this celebration is the meal we share with our loved ones. This year, why not try to create a Georgia Grown Thanksgiving bounty?" challenges Commissioner Black. "And while you're preparing and appreciating that meal with your family

and friends, always be sure to keep in mind the important food safety tips that help ensure everyone fully enjoys the meal and leftovers."
"Remembering basic food safety tips plays a huge role in keeping those around your Thanksgiving table healthy and free from food-borne illness," said Oscar Garrison, Director of Consumer Protection with the Department of Agriculture. "Even if you're not actually preparing a

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. "The year has turned its circle, The seasons come and go. The harvest all is gathered in And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures, The fields, their yellow grain, So open wide the doorway~ Thanksgiving comes again!" ~Old Rhyme
Melanie Hollingsworth
"What Are You Most Thankful For?"
As Thanksgiving fast approaches, "What are you most thankful for?" is a question on everyone's mind. My answer this year is simply, "The harvest!"
When thinking about the Thanksgiving season, images are immediately conjured in my mind of a pilgrim enjoying his first piece of Indian corn, a child picking their first Georgia grown apple at a local orchard, families who often go hungry receiving a basket full of groceries, and getting up at 6:30 a.m. to help my granny cook her infamous dressing. All of these fond thoughts center on the one word that sustains us all: Food! Yet, I cannot be thankful alone for the food, I have to be thankful for those hands who prepared it.
We often wander mindlessly through our grocery stores, checking off the list as we go. Seldom do we worry that we will be unable to retrieve the products we came for. The faithful bread aisle is always stocked to the top shelf, the steadfast milk piled five to six gallons deep and the endless array of various fall apples overtake the produce section -- yet we just cross off our sheet and race to the checkout counter.
This year, I encourage you to take a different approach when purchasing and preparing foods during the holiday season.
When you select that perfect gala or honeycrisp apple, ponder on the hands that produced it. Maybe it was an old friend of yours in the north Georgia Mountains, or maybe your mind goes straight to the outdated picture of a farmer in overalls and a straw hat that you have never even come close to meeting. Yet, the faithful food continues to show up at our local market every year right on time offering plenty in both variety and quantity.
Think for just a moment, as you smell the fresh cinnamon and pumpkin spice smells of the fall, who grows your food? How was it harvested? Who loaded and delivered it to the market? Think even deeper: How much of the food you see in your local store is Georgia Grown? Perhaps you are even unaware that Georgia apples are in peak season from late August through November.
Apples are not the only items seasonally fresh in Georgia in the fall months. How about the famous and nutritiously healthy pecan? Spruce up your diet even more with these fall commodities: collards, peas, sweet potatoes and turnips. Sweet potatoes are high in Vitamin A, which aids in the protection of your immune system. Increase the presence of "green" on your plate with collards, peas, and turnips and you in turn increase your intake of antioxidants. Antioxidants have been shown to protect cells from oxygen free radicals, which aid in protection from heart disease, cancer and other diseases. On top of the health benefits, when you purchase a seasonal item, the nutritional value and flavors you experience are at their peak.
This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to be thankful. Be thankful for the food in your grocery store and the hands that have prepared it, all the way from the farm to the table. Experience rich, complex flavors and healthy benefits as you purchase seasonal items. Most importantly, enjoy those around you, and remember nothing brings people together better than good food.

Granny Nell's Dressing
Ingredients: 1 Whole fryer chicken 1 Can (10.75 ounce) of Cream of Mushroom Soup
(can substitute with Cream of Celery Soup) 1 Can (10.75 ounce) of Cream of Chicken Soup 1 (14 ounce) package of corn bread stuffing
Directions: Place the chicken in a large pot and fill, about one inch over the chicken, with water. Be sure to leave a three to four inch space from the water line to the top of the pot to prevent boiling over. Once the chicken begins to boil, lower the heat to medium/medium-high and let it cook for about forty-five minutes to an hour until done. Once the chicken cooks through take it off the heat and let it cool for about 30 min. Remove the chicken from the chicken stock (be sure to reserve the stock) and debone. Combine the chicken stock with the cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup. Spray non-stick spray in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Place the corn bread stuffing in the bottom of the pan and pour the soup mixture over it. Tip** for a more soupy dressing use more of the soup mixture; for a more firm dressing use less of the soup mixture Last add in the meat from your chicken and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until bubbling.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Page 11

November is National Georgia Pecan Month

Great Holiday Gift

November is National Georgia Pecan Month and Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black wants to remind Georgians of this valuable state nut.
"Georgia is the nation's leading pecan producing state," Black said. "Albany and Dougherty counties are known as the `Pecan Capital of the World' because of the high number of pecan trees in these areas."
Pecans have been in the spotlight recently because of their antioxidant abilities; protecting the body from cancer, heart problems and other diseases. They are a good source of protein and are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium and the B vitamins. Rich in potassium and phosphorus, pecans also provide fiber. They have been found to help lower cholesterol and contain only a trace of sodium.
During the month of November and year-round, Black encourages consumers to incorporate more Georgia pecans into their diet. "Peak harvest for pecans started in September and continues through this month, but consumers can find Georgia pecans year-round," Black said. "They are the all-season nut, great right now for the upcoming holidays as the perfect finishing touch on a variety of foods."
The Georgia Pecan Commission unveiled its brand new AntioxiNUT campaign in September.
"The creation of the Georgia Pecan Commission AntioxiNUT Campaign includes an Advisory Board and new logo, which will increase the recognition of Georgia pecans as a healthy snack and recipe ingredient," noted Duke Lane, Jr., chairman of the Georgia Pecan Commission. "Additionally, our Advisory Board members will serve as ambassadors to share the important health benefits of

Yes, the peanut pumpkin is excellent for eating. The pumpkin gets its name from the warty protuberances on the surface that can look, in both color and shape, like peanuts. The peanut pumpkin is an heirloom variety that originated in France. Its actual variety name is `Galeux D'Eysines.' That is the name you will find it under in seed catalogs if you want to try to grow one yourself. You may find peanut pumpkins for sale at Georgia farms and farmers markets. Some people may not think they are as pretty as smooth-skinned pumpkins but they are attractive in their own peanutty way and each one is unique. They also can be used for jack-o-lanterns.
***
Do witch hazels grow in Georgia?
Yes. There are several species and numerous hybrids of witch hazels that grow in Georgia. They make interesting large shrubs or small trees and deserve to be used more frequently. Their flowers can have a wonderful, spicy fragrance. Depending on the species or cultivar, they may bloom in fall, winter or spring. Your local nursery or garden center can provide you more information. Fall is an excellent time to plant a witch hazel.

Nutrition Coordinator Melanie

Hollingsworth has been named to the

AntioxiNUT Advisory Board, serving on a

panel of health and nutrition experts who

will advise and assist with the education

and promotion of the health benefits of

pecans.

"I am honored to be a part of this

initiative with the Georgia Pecan

Commission. From a nutritional

standpoint, the Georgia pecan is an

amazing product; power-packed in protein

and fiber, while remaining low in

cholesterol and sodium," Hollingsworth

said. "Take the time to enjoy Georgia

in water. Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk
does not improve water uptake. If you plan to use electric lights on the
tree, adhere to the following guidelines: Use lights that produce low heat, such
as miniature lights, to reduce drying of the tree.
Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set.
Do not overload electrical circuits. Always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed.

were recognized for continuously operating for 100 years or more, and Georgia's Farm Bureau Federation is helping to fight metal theft, a problem that is causing tremendous economic loss for our state's farmers. These are just a few examples of the many items of interest readers see in the publication each issue.
The Bulletin, which is a great source for those consumers looking for locally-grown farm products, also includes several listings of pick-your-own-produce farms each year. And this issue contains our yearly listing of choose-and-cut Christmas tree farms. You simply will not find a better smorgasbord of agricultural and consumer information than the Market Bulletin.
Published every other week, the Bulletin provides readers with 26 issues per year. Subscriptions are available to Georgia residents for $10 per year; out-ofstate subscriptions are available for $20 per year (out-of-state subscriptions must be

within the United States or its territories).

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge recently announced a partnership aimed at increasing awareness about the importance of proper nutrition and healthy eating. The "Feed My School for a Week" program also will teach Georgia students more about where their food comes from.
Bleckley, Colquitt and Hall counties have been selected as the three school systems to pilot the "Feed My School for a Week" program during the 2011-2012 school year.
"This is a great leap forward to help show young Georgians where the food they eat is grown," said Commissioner Black. "Through this program, students will learn about the processes taken to bring their

school meals from a local Georgia farm to the cafeteria table, while simultaneously receiving a healthy, delicious meal."
"Georgia is second in the nation in childhood obesity," Superintendent Barge said. "The `Feed My School for a Week' program is a great first step in raising students' awareness of nutritional options as well as promoting healthier meals in our schools."
The phrase "Farm-to-School" is becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. when it comes to offering healthy, fresh produce options to students. To keep Georgia a step above the rest, the State Departments of Education and Agriculture have combined their efforts to better assist all school districts in this initiative.
The "Feed My School for a Week" program aims to help bridge the gap in the nutritional value and quality of food served in Georgia schools, while providing more

It is possible that your figs are not producing fruit because they are not getting enough sun or because they are getting too much fertilizer. They may also be too young. Most figs have a juvenile period of three to four years in which they do not produce fruit or fruit of edible quality. Cutting the trees down would not correct the problem. scheduled for January 11, 2012. This issue will include notices for horse shows and events in January, February and March, as well as listings of boarding facilities, horses at stud, and ads for miscellaneous equine equipment and supplies. A 30-word limit will be observed for these notices. Deadline for the edition is Dec. 28, 2011. Only one ad per family per issue will be allowed.
Notices included in the "Equine for Sale" and "At Stud" categories must be accompanied by a copy of a valid, negative Coggins test (made within the past 12 months); otherwise, they will not be published.
In addition, the Georgia Animal Protection Act requires boarding and breeding facilities to be licensed. Current license number must be submitted with notices for "At Stud" and "Boarding Facilities." Notices submitted without this information will not be published.

In the fall of the year all conifers drop, or shed, a certain portion of their oldest needles. This is a normal part of the life cycle of the tree. This phenomenon occurs because the tree is preparing itself for winter. Most farms provide shaking or blowing services to remove loose needles so that you will depart with a perfectly clean tree.
Cutting the tree is easiest as a two person project. The cutter usually lies on the ground. while the helper holds the bottom limbs up. As the cut is being made, the helper should tug on the tree lightly to ensure that the saw kerf remains open and the saw does not bind. The tugging force should be applied to the side of the tree opposite the cut. For Leyland cypress trees, the cut is best made by an attendant at the farm using a chain saw. A back cut should

Working Together to Keep Rural Roads Safe

During the crop planting and harvest seasons in Georgia, motorists are more likely than ever to encounter farm equipment moving on rural roadways.
But just as a motorist is entitled to use the roads, farmers also are entitled to use those same roads to get their farm machinery from farm to farm or field to field. All too often a motorist driving at or above the speed limit will encounter a tractor, combine or other piece of farm machinery that is traveling at only 15 to

Black and Blackwood announced the new campaign last month, and the two were joined by Duvall October 28 in traveling to Perry, Blakely, Tifton and Statesboro to meet with groups to remind farmers and drivers alike how to safely share the roads.
It is important for Georgia drivers to remember that farm equipment is designed to be used in fields and is not

Take the cut tree to the processing area where it will be cleaned and netted. Netting makes transporting and handling the tree substantially easier.
Once you have transported the tree home, you need to care for it properly.
When a Christmas tree is cut, over half of its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your displayed tree. Below are a number of tips to help care for displayed trees:
Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go six to eight hours after cutting the trunk and still

25 miles per hour. A collision between a passenger vehicle and a tractor can easily result in serious injury or, in some cases, even death.
To draw attention to an increasing number of crashes involving farm equipment on Georgia roads, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, Governor's Office of Highway Safety Director Harris Blackwood, and Georgia Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall, along with other partners and law enforcement agencies, are supporting the "Improving Georgia's Yield Behind the Wheel" campaign. Earlier last month Governor Nathan Deal proclaimed the

A farmer who sees a passenger vehicle behind his farm equipment understands your trip is being delayed and, if at all possible, will pull off the road at a safe location to allow you to pass. However, the shoulder lane of some rural roads may be soft, wet or steep and that can cause the farm vehicle to tip or become stuck, or the shoulder may not be able to support the heavy machinery. So, be patient until the farmer can accommodate your needs. And remember that a momentary slow-down is preferred
