Peanut Butter
Supply and Demand
Root of Rising Costs
Editor's Note: The following editorial was submitted by Georgia Peanut Commission Chairman Armond Morris and Georgia Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall to address the misconception consumers may have that rising peanut butter costs are due to higher peanut prices paid to farmers. Georgia grows almost half of all peanuts produced in the U.S. The Georgia Peanut Commission represents Georgia's 4,500 peanut farmers. Georgia Farm Bureau is the state's largest general farm organization and many of its members grow peanuts.
Recent reports of increasing peanut butter costs and farmers receiving record high peanut prices don't tell the whole story. Some consumers may have concluded from these reports that farmers are responsible for the higher peanut butter prices peanut butter manufacturers have announced.

New Fall Crop Grown in Georgia for First Time in Century

Question: What's green and red and comes from Georgia?
Answer (believe it or not): Olives.
For the first time since the 1800s, there has been an olive harvest on the U.S. East Coast, and it was near the southeastern Georgia city of Lakeland.
Olive oil, according to research provided to Georgia Olive Farms (GOF),

which planted its first 16 acres in April 2009, was shipped in barrels from the Georgia coast back in the 19th Century.
"I don't know what happened, if it was hurricanes or the Civil War, but everyone is telling us that this is the first commercial harvest on the East Coast," said Jason Shaw, one of GOF's founders.
Shaw first dreamed about planting olive orchards in the Deep South when he was studying abroad in Verona, Italy, in 1996.

He noticed that Italy and southern Georgia have similar weather patters (hot and humid) for growing olives.
"That sparked our imagination back then," he said, and soon the Shaws became interested in olive orchards in California. "We went to the West Coast, and felt like there's no reason why we couldn't make it work here."
Jason, his brother, Sam, and cousin, Kevin, joined forces in 2009 to plant a super high-density olive orchard (over 600 trees per acre) suitable for mechanical

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Becky's Quick Pecan Pie

1 (4-serving size) package vanilla Instant Pudding and Pie Filling 1 cup dark corn syrup 1 (5-oz.) can evaporated milk (approximately 3/4 cup) 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup chopped Georgia pecans 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine dry pudding mix, corn syrup, milk and egg in large bowl; mix well. Stir in pecans. Pour into unbaked pie crust. Bake for 40 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Becky Johnson Conyers, Ga.

Testing note: This is a great pecan pie for those folks who complain that the traditional pecan pie is too sweet. This one is not sweet, but still has a good pecan taste.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

along, the oil extracted has a mellower, buttery flavor, and color becomes more rich and golden.
"We like to let the olives ripen, so we have a milder, buttery flavor," Shaw said.
Whether the fruit is harvested by machine or hand, time is critical because olives need processing within 24 hours. Otherwise, the fruit begins to ferment, affecting the flavor in a negative way. To harvest its crop, GOF uses blueberry equipment modified for olives.
After harvesting, olives are refrigerated immediately and taken to a local cold-storage facility, where they are cooled to a recommended temperature of 41 degrees F.
The olives are trucked to Texas for milling and processing into oil, and

dictates. Although peanut prices are higher than
farmers have seen in a long time, it should be noted that farmers are facing record high production costs. According to University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Economist Nathan Smith, this year's peanut crop will be one of the costliest to produce on record. Rising costs of fuel, fertilizer, seed, and pest and weed control are expected to increase the cost of irrigated peanuts by 30 percent and non-irrigated peanuts by 20 percent above last year.
Even in the face of rising peanut butter prices, peanut butter is still a relatively inexpensive source of high quality protein.
Georgia's peanut farmers have remained committed to feeding America in good years and in bad because they take pride in knowing their peanuts are used to make nutritious products that feed America. They know that peanut butter has increased in demand as Americans have cut their budgets to weather the recession and their hope is that supply and demand will soon stabilize.

transported back to Georgia for labeling and bottling. Shaw said they should produce about 500 acres of olives within five years, yielding 1,800 tons annually. And, he would like to have 20,000 acres in the next 10 years. His goal: to satisfy the local market's demand for olive oil, along with that of the entire East Coast.
Beth Meeks, an area marketing coordinator for the Department, began working with the GOF growers when they planted their first tree in 2009.
"There is a lot of interest in olives from local farmers...they are sitting back and seeing how it goes," she said, adding that the soil in Southeast Georgia is "pretty good" for olive growing. "The Shaws have done really well," Meeks said.
"We've worked to get them to different food shows, where they've met several high-end chefs interested in their olive oil," she said. Events included shows for Georgia Grown products and the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Conference.
"A lot of the executive chefs generally are interested in local and sustainable foods," Shaw said. "They sometimes have

trouble finding local products, including olive oil."
"Beth has really been a God-send to us," Shaw said. "She's been a real help to us in all kinds of ways. It's been amazing."
The process of extracting oil from olives has been a constant one since the beginning of recorded history. Through the centuries, only the equipment has undergone significant changes, as fruit is harvested, crushed, and the remaining solids are removed from the liquid produced.
"We're really excited about this," Shaw concluded. "We think it's a good thing for Georgia agriculture and for economic development in general."

Will a pesticide remain viable longer if I pour it in an airtight container?
You should never store pesticides in containers that were not intended for that purpose. Keep the pesticide in the container it came in. That includes insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or any other kind of pesticide in any form liquid, powder or granule. People, pets and livestock may be killed by accidentally consuming a pesticide or drinking or eating from a container that once held a pesticide. Children as well as adults have died from drinking pesticides that were being stored in a soft drink bottle, sports drink bottle, juice bottle or similar container.

Are there any evergreen ferns that are hardy outdoors?
Four possible choices are the holly fern, Christmas fern, ebony spleenwort, and autumn fern. Holly fern is better for the coast and Piedmont, but the other three will thrive throughout the state.
***
My neighbor has perennial zinnias they come back every year. All I have ever seen are annual zinnias. Are these perennial ones new?
Your neighbor does not have perennial zinnias. A perennial is a plant that lives from year to year. Zinnias are annuals; the plants are killed by freezing temperatures. Your neighbor's zinnias are coming back the following year from seeds that the plants dropped. Perhaps your neighbor is even breaking apart the old flower heads and scattering these seeds around his garden himself. Numerous annuals will "self-sow" when they are allowed to set seed and the garden soil and conditions are adequate for the seeds to sprout and grow. These are sometimes referred to as "re-seeding annuals." Petunia, cosmos, marigold, abelmoschus, torenia, impatiens, sunflower, salvia and other annuals often reseed themselves.

What is the best way to store cheese?
Refrigerate cheese in its original wrapping until ready to use. When cheese is removed from its original packaging, wrap it tightly with plastic film wrap or foil. Once cheese is exposed to air, molding and dehydration may occur. To help protect cheese from mold, double-wrap it and place it in a sealed container after each use. You may wish to store cheese in a refrigerator drawer so it does not pick up flavors from other foods. Strongsmelling cheeses, like Limburger, should be wrapped well and kept in a separate container to prevent their odors from transferring to other foods. As a general rule, the harder the cheese, the longer its shelf-life. Hard cheeses such as Parmesan, Cheddar,

The ribbon cutting for the new Georgia Agriculture Building was held October 18 during the opening day of the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie, Ga.. This new building, which was a partnership of the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) in cooperation with the Expo, will be a permanent exhibit facility on the Expo site. The ribbon cutting ceremony included (L to R) Wendell Brown, Exhibitor Coordinator, Sunbelt Expo; Billy Skaggs, GDA Chief Operating Officer; Robert Fountain, Jr., GFB Middle Georgia Vice Pres.; Jack Spruill, GDA Marketing Director; Bernard Sims, GFB North Georgia Vice Pres.; and Chip Blalock, Sunbelt Expo Executive Director.

Georgia Grown

(Continued from Page 1)

"We were very excited that the Georgia Department of Agriculture asked us to be a part of this rebranding process for an already great program," said Wendy Brannen, executive director of the Vidalia Onion Committee. "The new logo and overall look of Georgia Grown will better lend itself to Vidalia onion packaging and marketing collateral developed by us and the other quality Georgia products."
The new Georgia Grown look will be featured on state vehicles, signage at farmers' markets, in grocery stores, during statewide expo events and in

consumer advertising. The Georgia Department of Agriculture also will be launching a new Georgia Grown website in 2012 that will provide producers and manufacturers with instructions on how to best incorporate the Georgia Grown look into their marketing elements.
"We have so many great products here in our state that are all Georgia Grown apples, blueberries, peaches, peanuts, pecans, Vidalia onions, tomatoes, watermelons, and many more and we are proud to tout their Georgia `roots'," said Commissioner Black.

The Georgia FFA Association made a huge impact at the 84th National FFA Convention last month, bringing home six national winners. In addition, Jefferson native Cain Thurmond was elected to serve as the 2011-2012 National FFA Southern Region Vice President. In addition, 55 Georgians received the prestigious American FFA Degree, 10 Georgia chapters earned a national 3-Star award, and Georgia was recognized for having a thirteenth consecutive year of membership growth.
Cain Thurmond, a member of the Jefferson City FFA chapter in Jefferson, Georgia, was elected as one of six student leaders to serve the National FFA Organization in 2011-2012. Thurmond and his teammates were selected from a field of 38 candidates. He will take a year of absence from the University of Georgia to travel over 125,000 miles across the United States and Japan representing agricultural education and the FFA. Thurmond, a junior at UGA majoring in Agricultural Business, is the thirteenth Georgian to become a national FFA officer.
Garrett South of the Franklin County FFA (Agricultural Mechanics Design & Fabrication); James Porter of the Echols County FFA (Agricultural Mechanics Energy Systems); Jacob Schindler of the Lowndes County FFA (Emerging Agriculture Technology); Kaitlyn Grizzle of the Franklin County FFA (Floriculture); and Nicholas Shealy of the Oglethorpe County FFA (Swine Production Placement) were each named national FFA proficiency award winners for the success they earned in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Georgia had fourteen national proficiency finalists who competed at the convention.
Tyler Claxton of the Perry FFA was named the top individual in the national Nursery/Landscape CDE. Claxton's agricultural education teachers at Perry are Dr. Argene Claxton, Dr. Phil Gentry and Mr. Phillip Gentry.
Jared Corbett (Echols County), Cohen Crosby (Atkinson County), Ethan Edge (Treutlen County), Kristin McCurdy (Gordon Central), Thad Robinson (Lanier County), Montana Smith (Early County), Cole Summerlin (Colquitt County), Cameron Vaughn (West Laurens), and Charles Wisenbaker (Lowndes County) were also recognized for SAE excellence as National Finalists in the proficiency award program. Only four students from across the nation are named National Finalists in each of the 47 proficiency areas. Charles Wisenbaker was also chosen to participate in an international agriculture tour of Costa Rica next summer.

peanuts this fall, most farmers contracted their peanuts for $550 to $600 a ton before planting their crop last spring. Farmers forward contract their crops in order to obtain financing to buy supplies needed to plant the crop.
Peanut market experts estimate 75 to 80 percent of Georgia's farmers contracted their peanuts with buyers at the lower prices, so only 20 to 25 percent of the peanuts that farmers are harvesting this fall are expected to be sold at the higher prices.

National Posted Price, also misled consumers. In mid-October, the USDA National Posted Price, which is issued weekly, listed runner peanuts - the type used to make peanut butter - at $1,200 a ton, but it's well known in the peanut industry that farmers never receive the USDA estimated price.
A low supply of peanuts left from last year's crop, poor market prices at planting, and drought conditions throughout this year's growing season have converged at one time to create a perfect storm that is driving up the price of peanuts. The tight peanut supply and the rules of supply and demand, not farmers, are responsible for higher prices consumers may experience.
Some might criticize farmers for not planting enough peanut acres, but farmers told peanut buyers in the spring that prices were not high enough to compete for cotton and corn acres, but buyers assumed there would be enough peanuts. Farmers are business owners and just like other businesses, they have to make planting decisions that will keep their farms economically viable to survive.
Peanuts require crop rotation to maximize production efficiency and to protect natural resources. Cotton and corn are the predominant crops used for this purpose. Farmers already have the specialized equipment to plant, tend and harvest each of these crops, so it requires only a shift in resources when the market

harvesting. With Berrien Sutton of Homerville, Ga., they formed GOF as a cooperative association to develop the olive industry in Georgia and surrounding states.
The goal of Georgia Olive Farms is to produce high-quality extra-virgin olive oil in the South, thereby giving farmers here a viable fall cash crop. The feasibility of table olive production also is being studied. "Our main focus is on production of the extra-virgin olive oil," Shaw said.
The orchards consist of 96 percent Abrequina variety olive trees, along with two others: Arbosana and Koroneiki. Shaw said the Abrequina works better for them than traditional ones because of its cold-hardiness.
"A lot of what we've done up to this point is experimental," said Shaw. "We've tried different pruning techniques, but it's still farming, and we have to see what works best for us in our area." And, that includes how the South Georgia weather affects the olives.
A test orchard with traditional varieties was planted in conjunction with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, and a small three-acre organic orchard was developed in 2010.
GOF growers who have been experimenting with various fertilization and irrigation techniques said they will share information gathered with those wanting to raise olives, and contracts are available. A distributor for olive trees on the East Coast, GOF is in business to furnish large quantities of trees to major orchards or ornamental trees to individuals.
While most people may assume that growing olives in South Georgia is a new idea, olives in that area are, in reality, a tradition older than the U.S. In archeological excavations of 16th Century

Franciscan settlements in Florida up through Georgia, olive pits have been found.
And, in the early 18th Century, British settlers arriving at St. Simon's Island found olive trees growing alongside orange groves. These olives were most likely brought on board ships to the New World by Spanish explorers as early as 1526.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has written, and helped the growers obtain, a Georgia Specialty Crop Grant from the Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The $100,000 three-year grant began in 2009 and carries through this year to promote competitiveness of specialty crops.
"The grants have been critical because we've been able to bring in experts to meet

with us and share their expertise," Shaw said.
"The Department of Agriculture is behind entrepreneurs like the Shaws 100 percent," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black. "There's a lot of interest among farmers for specialty crops like olives, and we're going to do whatever we can to promote and help market these crops."
As with all fruit, flavor can differ significantly depending upon which point in the season harvest occurs. The harvest season for olives runs from Labor Day through November. Olives collected during early harvesting yield oil characterized by a crisper flavor with a very clear color. As the season moves

In an effort to develop the olive industry in Georgia and the South, Georgia Olive Farms planted super high-density olive orchards, which consist of a little over 600 trees to the acre. The Shaw farm is located near the southeastern town of Lakeland, Ga.
