Ag Expo Offers Something for Everyone
As the Sunbelt Ag Expo enters its 34th year, we would like to invite our friends, old and new, to experience all that North
America's Premier Farm ShowTM has to offer. Technology has radically changed the face of American agribusiness, and the Expo has become one of the leading venues to showcase the latest goods and services, cutting edge techniques and labor saving devices, all displayed in one convenient location. With over 1,200 commercial exhibitors, believe me when I say that there is something for everyone!
Our guest columnist this week is Chip Blalock, Executive Director, Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition, 290-G Harper Boulevard, Moultrie, GA 31788-2157.
Faced with extremes in weather and impacted by legislation, this past year has proved to be one of the most challenging for our agricultural community. During

these demanding times, we at the Expo
strive even harder to provide access to
practical solutions, by showcasing the
latest innovations in agricultural
techniques and practices, cutting edge
research and development, and state-of-
the-art machinery and related products.
Our goal is to provide a central
location in which agricultural producers,
families, communities and government
agencies can address economic,
environmental, health and quality of life
issues. Interactive educational exhibits,
guided tours, and demonstrations will
showcase how agricultural researchers
and educators are addressing important
issues, safeguarding and improving our
food supply and the environment, and
helping to enhance the efficiency and
profitability of agriculture and related
industries.
So take time to participate in all that
the Expo has to offer, from live field
demonstrations,
to
livestock
demonstrations, to our Family Life
exhibits, to the amazing stock dog trials.
In addition, the antique tractor section and
daily 2 pm parade, the atvs, the auto show,
the backyard gardening seminars and last,
but certainly not least, the hunting and
fishing section, all continue to be

Governor Announces Ag Appointments
Governor Nathan Deal recently appointed Wes Shannon and J. Kenneth Morrow to the Agricultural Education Advisory Commission. He also reappointed R. Micah Story to the Commission.
Shannon, who is Tift County Farm Bureau Director, also serves as chair of the Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Advisory Committee for Peanuts. He has been a full-time farmer for more than 30 years and has served on the Ag Advisory Committee for then-Rep. Saxby Chambliss.
Morrow is president and general manager of Sod Atlanta in Cartersville and has served as president of the Georgia Turfgrass Association and vice chairman of the Georgia Agribusiness Council.
Story, an agricultural teacher at East Jackson Middle School, was the 2002 Teacher of the Year for Jackson County and a 2001 recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. He currently serves as a National Agriscience Teacher Ambassador, working with peers to integrate science education into the agriculture classroom.

Families to Receive Recognition for Centennial Farms
Farms hold a central role in the heritage of our state, having formed the economic, cultural, and family foundation for generations of Georgians. Each year, farms continuously operating for over 100 years are recognized by the Georgia Centennial Farms Program.
The 2011 Georgia Centennial Farm Awards will be presented Friday, October 7, 2011, at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. The ceremony will begin with a luncheon followed by the awards presentation. This year's keynote speaker is Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black.
Recognition is given to the farm owners through one of three distinguished awards. The Centennial Heritage Farm Award
honors farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Farm Award does not require continual family ownership, but
farms must be at least 100 years old or more and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Family Farm Award recognizes farms owned by

This October 18-20 marks the 34th anniversary of North America's Premier Farm ShowTM. New to the Expo this year is the Georgia Agriculture Building, a new permanent exhibit made possible through the partnership of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Farm Bureau and Sunbelt Expo. Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by
telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Marinated Potato Salad
This recipe is fresh and light for spring and summer cookouts. If you have leftovers, it gets better the longer it stays in the refrigerator.
2 pounds new red potatoes 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 4 fresh basil leaves, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried basil) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Cook potatoes in enough boiling water to cover in a large Dutch oven for 8 minutes or until fork tender; drain. Cool and cut into thin slices. Combine potatoes and onions in a large mixing bowl. Combine olive oil, vegetable oil, vinegar, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, basil, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Whisk to combine ingredients. Pour over the potato mixture and cover tightly. Marinate in the refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally. Yield: 10 12 servings.

Editor's Note: The ingredients and instructions for preparing the glaze used in the Best Ever Apple Cake recipe were omitted when the recipe was published in the September 21, 2011 issue. The correct recipe appears in its entirety below. Please reference the testing note at the end of the recipe.
Best Apple Cake Ever
3/4 cup buttermilk 3/4cup cooking oil 3 eggs, beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups sugar 2 cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 cups peeled, grated tart Georgia apples 1 cup chopped Georgia pecans (lightly toasting brings out the flavor) 1 (8-oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained 1 cup flaked coconut
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla and sugar in large mixing bowl. Beat at low speed of electric mixer until well combined. Combine flour, soda, salt and cinnamon in large bowl. Add to liquid ingredients, mixing well. Stir in apples, pecans, pineapple and coconut. Pour batter into 3 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Make glaze (recipe follows) and pour over warm cake layers in pans. Cool for 15 minutes in pans. Turn out onto wire rack to cool completely. Frost with Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe follows). Store in refrigerator.
Best Apple Cake Ever Glaze
1 cup sugar 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup butter 1 teaspoon white corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine all ingredients except vanilla in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook for 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla. Pour over warm cake layers in pans.
Best Apple Cake Ever Cream Cheese Frosting
1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup butter, softened 1 (1-pound) package powdered sugar, sifted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine cream cheese and butter in large bowl of electric mixer, beating until smooth. Add powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Stir in vanilla. Spread between layers and on top and sides of "Best Apple Cake Ever."
Donna Wiggins Landford Conyers, Ga.
Testing note: This cake is VERY moist and VERY sweet! The layers are saturated with the "glaze." You may want to omit the glaze and frost with cream cheese frosting.

Seasonal Sensations -
Pecans
Melanie Hollingsworth
Pecans have been age-old favorite of our nation's forefathers, such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson but this North American-native nut isn't about to go out of style any time soon.
The power-packed pecan is high in protein and fiber, while remaining low in cholesterol and sodium. This nut has most recently been in the spotlight because of its antioxidant abilities, protecting the body from cancer, heart problems and other diseases. Research shows that incorporating more pecans in one's diet can aid in increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the "good" cholesterol, as well as decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol. Additionally, vitamin E, a strong lipid-soluble antioxidant, has been garnering attention due to its ability to protect cells from oxygen free radicals, aiding in a cell's capacity to maintain the structure of skin membranes and mucus cells.
Here are some tips for consumers who are interested in purchasing these timeless treasures:
Look for an intact shell if buying unshelled pecans; shells with cracks can harbor mold and allow the nut to go rancid more quickly
If buying shelled nuts, check to see that they contain a healthy offwhite coloring and are in a tightly sealed bag or container
Due to the high oil content of pecans, they are highly perishable and must be stored properly: Unshelled pecans will not go rancid for months if they are stored away from air and light, in a cool dry place; and shelled pecans need to be placed in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container or plastic bag to avoid rancidity (a sealed container is important because pecans can readily absorb odors from other nearby foods, such as fruits and vegetable)
Once pecans become rancid or moldy, immediately throw them away
The healthiest way to incorporate pecans into your diet is in the raw form. Pecans can be found in most grocery stores year round, and make for great additions to salads, snack mixes and as casserole toppers.
Here's a simple, sensational recipe that will take your pecans to the next level:
1 egg white, beaten 2 cups of shelled pecans 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Directions: Stir egg white and pecans together to coat evenly. Mix together brown sugar and cinnamon. Add nut mixture, mix, and coat well. Microwave on high for 4-6 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes. Note, the pecans will not be crunchy until they have cooled. Take the time to enjoy Georgia Grown pecans as a nutritionally healthy addition to your diet, because you never know, you might just be adding years to your life! Melanie Hollingsworth is the Nutritional Outreach Specialist for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Nutrition Science and from Barry University with a Masters in Biomedical Sciences and loves testing new recipes. One of her goals for the Department is to show Georgia consumers how to incorporate Georgia Grown products into their everyday lives in a healthy and satisfying way.

All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Prepare House Plants
For Move Indoors
Prepare house plants this month for their move indoors for the winter. If you have pots of plants that have spent the summer outside, turn them to sever the root system that has grown into the surrounding soil through the bottom of the pot. New root growth will form in a few days. Move the plants gradually to an area of lower light intensity. Moving the plants abruptly to dimly lighted areas may result in leaf drop.

burning vegetative debris from land clearing activities with additional conditions. A summary of the additional conditions are as follows:
Local fire department and Georgia Forestry ordinances and regulations must be followed at all times. Check with them first to determine if a burn permit can be issued.
The ACD must be located at least 300 feet from any occupied structure, and no more than one ACD can be operated within a 10-acre area at one time.
Only wood wastes can be burned, and the amount of dirt on or in the material being burned must be minimized.
No burning is allowed before 10 a.m. and after one hour before sunset.
No smoke emissions exceeding 40 percent opacity may be produced except during the ignition and the changing of the pit.
The open burning requirements for counties with populations over 65,000 are in addition to the summer burn ban that applies to 54 counties in the northern half of the state from May 1 through September 30. For a complete list of rules and regulations, as well as an operating guide for using an ACD, go to the EPD Open Burning Website by clicking on the Open Burning Rules "flame" at http://www.georgiaair.org/. new "Georgia Agriculture Building," a joint venture between the Georgia Department of Agriculture and Georgia Farm Bureau. We can't say thank you enough to these two leading Agricultural organizations for making an investment in our show grounds and creating a permanent exhibit facility for the state's #1 industry called Agriculture. Stop in and see them at their new building just inside the main gate under the flight tower.
Another ribbon cutting will be held at the new Priefert Horse arena. We have teamed with Priefert, Southern States and the Colquitt Co. Saddle club to expand our arena to an officially sized multipurpose horse arena and the Saddle Club, with the help of the Georgia High School Rodeo Association, will conduct rodeo themed horse demonstrations through the 3 days of Expo. We will also have demos showcasing the local Special Olympics riders daily.

What exactly are muscadines? I am from up North and am unfamiliar with them.
Muscadines are a kind of grape. They are native to the southeastern U.S. from Delaware to Missouri to Texas. You are probably more familiar with bunch grapes such as `Concord' or any of the table grapes you see for sale in large bunches at the grocery story. Muscadines do not grow in large bunches but in small clusters. The individual grapes are usually larger than those of bunch grapes, however. The skin of muscadines is thicker than bunch grapes. It is edible, but most muscadine eaters take one of the grapes and squirt the juicy flesh into their mouth and discard the skin. Most muscadines are purple (sometimes called black) or bronze or gold (sometimes called white). A few are classified as red. The light-colored muscadines are sometimes referred to as "scuppernongs" after the original white variety which was named `Scuppernong.'
Muscadines are good for fresh eating. They have a different flavor from the bunch grapes you were familiar with in the North, but give muscadines a try. Their flavor is often richer, muskier and more complex than many bunch grapes. Muscadines also make one of the most flavorful jellies you'll ever eat, and muscadine wine is a favorite of many as a dessert wine.
These grapes are popular with home gardeners because they generally require less care in our climate than many of the bunch grape varieties.
Muscadines ripen in the late summer and early fall. If you are interested in

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division recently announced that air curtain destructors now will be required in six additional counties when vegetative material is burned for land clearing.
A county population of over 65,000 triggers air quality requirements for all land clearing activities under the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) Open Burning Rules.
Results from the 2010 Census show that the following Georgia counties have grown, with each now containing more
pollution. According to EPD's Air Protection
Branch, Georgia's Open Burning Rules are designed to protect human health and public safety. Wood smoke contains particulate matter and more than 100 other chemical compounds and pollutants. Particulates can lodge deep in the lungs, causing structural damage while reducing resistance to infection. Long-term exposure may lead to chronic obstructive lung disease and an increased risk of cancer.

Bovine Trichomoniasis
Import Testing Requirement Now in Effect in Georgia
Bovine Trichomoniasis is a venereal disease affecting cattle that can cause substantial reproductive problems and is a major cause of infertility in naturally bred cattle in many areas of the mid south. This disease has resulted in significant losses in cattle herds, particularly in the western states. Since bovine trichomoniasis has been found in several western states, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has adopted certain rules to add bovine trichomoniasis to the list of reportable diseases and to provide for certain testing requirements relating to this disease.
Newly adopted Rule 40-13-2-.07, entitled "Bovine Trichomoniasis," requires testing of all virgin and nonvirgin bulls 18 months of age and older before entering Georgia. The rule requires bulls to test negative within 30 days prior to entering the state. The rule prevents bulls from having contact with
female cattle between the test and importation into Georgia. Bulls comingled with cows after testing are required to be retested. All bulls must be identified with a U.S.D.A. approved ear tag, registry brand, or registry tattoo. The rule further provides that the collection of samples must be conducted by an accredited veterinarian and that animals must be identified on an official test chart.
The adopted rule allows the State Veterinarian to exempt certain bulls from the Trichomoniasis testing requirements when it is determined that such animals do not pose a risk for introduction of trichomoniasis into Georgia. This includes: exhibition and rodeo bulls that are temporally in the state for an event with no comingling of female cattle and will be leaving immediately after the event; bulls going directly to slaughter or being sold to go directly to slaughter;
bulls being transported through Georgia in interstate commerce and not offloaded and comingled with female cattle; and
