NASS to Conduct
Ag Mgt. Survey
Beginning this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service will conduct its Agricultural Resource Management Survey.
"ARMS asks a small, but representative, sample of farmers about their operation in order to understand the current financial state of U.S. agriculture," said Doug Kleweno, Director of the NASS Georgia Field Office. "Participation in ARMS is so important because agricultural leaders use the information to make informed decisions that impact the future of farmers, their families, their businesses and their communities."
During the survey, which will continue through April, NASS will contact 1,400 Georgia producers and ask them to provide

What kind of kerosene should be burned in a home heater?

Only K-1 kerosene should be burned in a home heater. Also, heater manufacturers and the Georgia Department of Agriculture recommend clear, non-dyed fuel for home use because over an extended period of time, dye can damage a heater. Be sure to follow all the manufacturer's safety instructions when using a kerosene heater.

Is it safe to cook meat in a crock pot?
Slow cookers or crock pots can safely cook food. These countertop appliances cook foods slowly at a low temperature - generally between 170 degrees F and 280 degrees F. The low heat helps leaner, less expensive, cuts of meat become tender and causes less shrinkage. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created within the tightly covered container combine to destroy bacteria and make a slow cooker or crock pot a safe option for cooking foods.
***

Where do mosquitoes go in the winter?
In Georgia some species of mosquitoes overwinter in the egg stage and some in the adult stage. The adults that overwinter are females that will be able to start laying eggs again when warm weather returns in the spring. Mosquitoes that overwinter as adults undergo changes in body chemistry that enable them to endure the cold.

The Spring Farmland Edition of the Market Bulletin will be published March 9. Deadline for this issue is Feb. 16. Please adhere to the following guidelines when submitting farmland advertisements.
* Only farmland may be advertised.
Land tracts must be at least five acres in size and located in Georgia.
* Indicate acreage and county where
your property is located.
* All property must be for sale by
owner; no real estate brokers or agents are allowed to advertise; property under contract with a real estate agent or broker is not eligible for advertising. Consumers are encouraged to call the Market Bulletin office toll-free 1-800-282-5852, to report ads not in compliance with this

requirement.
* Descriptive terms should be limited
to those characterizing farm property or agricultural structures, such as barns,
stables, etc. Descriptive terms, such as square footage of homes, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc., will not be included for non-agricultural structures.
* Only one ad per household per issue is
permitted.
* For best results, include the price of the
property in the notice.
* Farmland ads cannot exceed 30 words
in length; a 30-word ad includes name, city, phone number or name and complete address. See ad form page 3.
* All notices must be received in
writing by the Feb. 16 deadline.
