Vol. 94, No. 16
Farm Front
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack designated Tattnall County as a primary natural disaster area July 13 due to losses caused by excessive rain, high winds and a hail storm that occurred March 26-28, 2011.
Eight additonal counties bordering Tattnall-- Appling, Candler, Emanuel, Evans, Liberty, Long, Toombs and Wayne--were declared contiguous disaster areas.
A Secretarial Disaster Designation makes farm operators in both primary and contiguous counties eligible to be considered for assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met. This assistance includes FSA emergency loans and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments (SURE) Program, which was approved as a part of the 2008 farm bill, as well as the Emergency Conservation Program, federal crop insurance and the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program.
Farmers in eligible counties have (Continued on Page 12)

What are doughnut peaches?
Doughnut peaches are a type of flat peach. They resemble lumpy doughnuts. Most have white flesh. They are also sold under the name "Saturn peaches" the pit being the planet and the encircling flesh being Saturn's distinctive rings. They are also called peento peaches, peen-to peaches, saucer peaches, Chinese saucer peaches and Chinese flat peaches. Doughnut peaches are not new but gained popularity in the 1990s because of their novelty and because their shape lends itself to packing and shipping. The name "doughnut peach" probably aided in their marketing as it is familiar and easier to remember than peento and peen-to, the anglicized forms of the Chinese name. (And who doesn't like doughnuts?) Their size (most are smaller than standard peaches) and shape makes them easy to eat out of hand. A few named varieties of peento or doughnut peaches are `Galaxy,' `Stark Saturn' and `UFO.' `Sweet Bagel' is a yellow-fleshed variety.

Will painting my porch ceiling light blue help keep bugs away?
This is a common belief, but there is no scientific evidence to suggest it does. Insects are generally attracted to light-colored surfaces more than dark surfaces. So, they'd probably be more attracted to light blue than dark blue, but you could say that about most

`Southern Style' Takes Canning to the Next Level in South Georgia

Many Georgians love to preserve and can fresh fruits and vegetables grown in their home state, but Lauri Jo Bennett has shown she can take home food processing to the next level.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and other officials recently were on hand for groundbreaking at Lauri Jo's Southern Style Canning in Norman Park, Ga., about eight miles from Moultrie in Colquitt County.
As part of Georgia Agriculture Awareness Day March 22, Bennett and her company were awarded the People's Choice winner for the annual Flavor of Georgia Food Project Contest for her Blueberry Pepper Jelly recipe.
And, as an additional honor, she addressed this year's session of the General Assembly where she was presented a proclamation. "We landed five new businesses after that visit," she said.

The company began as a hobby at her local high school's canning plant, growing into a thriving business which services 14 states.
Beginning with her own recipes, and those from her great-grandmother and husband, Bennett now oversees the entire process.
It all started in 2009 working in conjunction with her husband, Mike's independent trucking company. Gift baskets with "Southern Gourmet" products like pickles and salsa were shipped to local gift shops at Christmas time.
"We didn't have a clue as to what we were doing, but we now have 17 products and a cookbook," she said.
QVC, a cable TV shopping channel, recently showed an interest in working with "Southern Style," asking them to compile a cookbook. The relationship with QVC didn't quite pan out, she said, but the cookbook was finished, thanks to students at the local middle school who helped put it together.
Beth Meeks, area marketing cocoordinator, for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, has worked to help Bennett on the marketing side of the business.

"Beth has really helped me since January to market my products," she said. "She's helped me to get contacts."

Lauri Jo Bennett, right, owner of Lauri Jo's Southern Style Canning, and her mother-in-law and canning manager, Sandra Bennett, process one of their salsa products at the canning facility near Moultrie, Ga. The company is constructing a new 4,000square-foot building, expected to open on September 1.

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Seasonal Surprises--
Watermelon
Melanie Hollingsworth
Children are splashing, the summer sun is shining, and watermelons are here! Shake off your old way of thinking, that the only benefit to eating watermelon is the cold sugary burst of goodness, which helps quench the unrelenting Georgia heat. One could refer to this fruit as the "wondrous watermelon" with all the health benefits gained from eating a juicy, red slice. The low calorie, high fiber fruit has zero saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium therefore, it's a highly effective way to get rid of a sweet tooth without increasing any health risks.
Not only is watermelon low in potentially harmful components, it is high in beneficial nutrients such as Vitamins A, C, and B-6. So you may ask, what good are these vitamins to me? Vitamin A enhances the immune system by increasing the action of our white blood cells, as well as providing optimal eye health. Vitamin B-6 aids in the breakdown of proteins and helps the immune system produce antibodies, which help the body ward off diseases. Vitamin C helps protect the body from free radicals, which can cause cell damage and accelerate aging, as well as boosts the immune system's defenses against viruses and infections.
It is becoming common health knowledge that individuals who consume more fruit and vegetables have a lower risk of heart disease. Watermelons have taken this fact to a new level of research: "Evidence from a pilot study, led by food scientists at The Florida State University, suggests that watermelon can be an effective natural weapon against pre-hypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease" (Florida State University). Another benefit to eating this sweet treat is lycopene. Lycopene is the red-colored pigment that gives watermelons and other fruits, such as tomatoes and pink grapefruit, their red color. Lycopene is also considered a carotenoid. What is a carotenoid, you may ask? It is a fat-soluble plant compound that gives plants red, orange and yellow pigments, and can function as an antioxidant. Compounds created during photosynthesis (like hydrogen peroxide) can be damaging to cell membranes, which can lead to cell destruction. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals to prevent cellular damage, aiding in the prevention of disease and aging.
Watermelons are ninety percent high-quality H2O (water), and are great for rehydration. Watermelon juices are becoming increasingly popular and are simple to make at home. Just blend, strain, chill and serve! Other great ways for incorporating this lush fruit into a daily diet could include:
Cube slices of watermelon and place them in a plastic bag or container, then take them to work or play for a perfect snack;
Incorporate watermelon into salads or smoothies; Throw it on the grill for unique treat; Puree the watermelon and sweeten it with your juice of choice, then freeze as a homemade popsicles or ice cubes to use later as a refresher; Place it on top of banana yogurt with granola for breakfast, or dice it and throw it into a salsa for dinner; Mix in with some blueberries for an appealing (and festive) Fourth of July fruit salad; and/or Use it during craft time and carve a whole watermelon as you would a pumpkin for a summer afternoon activity (watermelon carving patterns can be found at www.watermelon.org). **Be mindful to refrigerate watermelon after cutting to keep from spoiling. Georgia is the fourth largest watermelon producer in the U.S., producing over 370,000 pounds annually. The Watermelon Capitol of the World is, naturally, found right in our home state in the city of Cordele. At the Cordele State Farmers Market, purchasing a watermelon can turn into a fun family outing not just another item to check off your grocery store list. Although the Fourth of July is considered the peak of watermelon season, you still can take advantage of the abundance and varieties of watermelon offered around you locally! Dive into the depths of its delicious taste, health benefits and endless possibilities for daily incorporation. Melanie Hollingsworth is the Nutritional Outreach Specialist for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Nutrition Science and from Barry University with a Masters in Biomedical Sciences and loves testing new recipes. One of her goals for the Department is to show Georgia consumers how to incorporate Georgia Grown products into their everyday lives in a healthy and satisfying way. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. Claim Period Opens in Class Settlement

Farm Front

Farmland

Native American farmers and ranchers who wish to file a claim in the Keepseagle class action settlement must do so by December 27, 2011 in order to have a chance to receive a cash payment or loan forgiveness, according to Jan Hipp, Senior Adviser for Tribal Relations to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. "Tribal leaders may want to consider advising Tribal members of the requirement to obtain and submit a completed claims package if they wish to participate in the Keepseagle claims process," Hipp said.
Keepseagle v. Vilsack was a lawsuit alleging that USDA discriminated against Native American farmers and ranchers in the way it operated its farm loan program. The lawsuit was settled late last year and the settlement has been approved by the court.
The filing period opened June 29, 2011 and continues for 180 days, until December 27, 2011.
USDA will pay up to $760 million in monetary relief, debt relief, and tax relief to successful claimants. There are two tracks for claims: Successful Track A claimants may receive up to $50,000; successful Track B claimants may receive up to $250,000. The standard of proof for Track B claims is a higher standard than what will be applied to Track A claims. Other than proof of tribal membership, no

documentation is required for a Track A

claim. For Track B, claimants will need to

provide documentation that meets the

evidence requirements of a Federal court

and proves all of the required elements

described in the claims package.

Keepseagle class counsel is holding a

number of meetings in the coming

months and will provide assistance to

help Track A claimants fill out a claims

package at those meetings. The dates and

times of the meetings are posted on the

website:

www.indianfarmclass.com.

Claimant services representatives can

be reached by calling 888-233-5506.

Claimants must register for a claims

package (by calling the number or visiting

the website www.indianfarmclass.com)

and the claims package will be mailed to

claimants. All those interested in learning

more or receiving information about the

claims process and claims packages are

encouraged to attend a meeting and

contact the website or claims telephone

This announcement does not relate to

claims for African American, women or

Hispanic farmers. Those claims will be

subject to different processes, and

information will be forthcoming in the

coming months.

`Southern Style' Canning

(Continued from Page 12)

"One thing that's amazing; we have cooked all our products on one stove," she said. "But, now, we've outgrown our facility tremendously in only two years."
Domestic food processors and blenders are used in the present facility, but allelectric kettles will be featured in the new place. Most of the items processed, like the pepper jelly, are one-day products, but the national award winner, Green Tomato Pickles, takes five days.
"We hand-pick, process and handpreserve...no automation," she stated. "We grow 70 percent of our products." FFA members, including her son, grow their seeds.
The company has a small retail shop in front of the present building, but the new facility will have a glass partition where visitors can see into the new processing area.
Bennett said she wants to promote agriculture tourism in the South Georgia area. The kitchen will be prepared to showcase the full production and processing area for group tours. Tasting areas also will be available, along with an old-fashioned game and Georgia Grown/Georgia-made market place, where products can be purchased onsite.

The new 4,000-square-foot state-of-theart building, expected to create eight to 10 new jobs in the next year, will quadruple current production levels and double the shipping and receiving capacity.
"We personally oversee our production, from selecting fresh, choice local produce to the final processing and shipping," she said. "We proudly shop with local farmers and support our southern roots." Also, she attends food shows like a recent one in Atlanta, where she met with potential retail buyers, allowing attendees to sample her 17 products.
A licensed co-packer, "Southern Style," will be able to process a product for resale under an individual's own brand. And, in addition, the company offers its own gift boxes for shipping.
Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 229-769-3391 or visit www.laurijossouthernstylecanning.com.
On her web page, this slogan can be found under the company logo: "Downhome cooking makes you dog-gone goodlooking." But Bennett recently has come up with a new one: "Preserving the South...one jar at a time."

Hundreds of farmers travelled to Moultrie, Ga., last month for the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition Field Day, an event that previews the even larger expo in October. New tractors and technologies were featured where the farmers learned about the latest trends in the agricultural industry. "Field Day is a great sneak preview of the big show in October where you can come see the crops in the growing stages," said Chip Blalock, executive director of the expo. This year's Sunbelt Expo is set for October 18-20. For more information about the Expo, call 229-985-1968 or visit website www.sunbeltexpo.com.
