NASS to Conduct Ag Surveys in Jan.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service will be conducting several surveys in January 2011 to gather critical agricultural inventory and production information for Georgia and the nation.
"During the first two weeks in January, producers in Georgia will be contacted to participate in the sheep and Goat Inventory Survey," said Doug Kleweno, Director of the NASS Georgia Field Office. "This survey will provide the latest information on conditions and trends in the U.S. sheep and goat industry for 2011.
"Accurate data on sheep and goat inventory and production allow USDA and the industry to be more responsive to the American and international public, increase consumer understanding and awareness, and establish an appreciation for the benefits of U.S. sheep and goats and their products," added Kleweno.
When contacted by the NASS Georgia

Field Office producers will be asked to provide information on the number of breeding and market sheep and goats, lambs and kids born during the previous year, as well as mohair production, wool production and prices.
NASS representatives also will contact milk producers across the country during January to conduct the 201 1 Milk Production Survey.
"The information we gather provides a snapshot of the milk production industry in Georgia and the nation, which is why it is very important for all selected producers to participate." Kleweno said. "These data, first and foremost, help the milk producers to determine their production and marketing strategies throughout the year."
The Milk Production survey is a quarterly survey, which gathers information from 202 producers in Georgia. NASS asks producers to provide

country's natural resources. Many farmers who need and want to
implement conservation measures on their land do not have the "up front" funds available to implement these practices.
"I encourage producers who want to conserve natural resources and need a source of financing to implement conservation measures to apply for credit through this program," Laster said. "It is a great opportunity for producers to remain good stewards of the land."
Producers can apply for conservation loans to improve or implement conservation practices on their land, as long as the practice is approved by the

The People Who Live in My Garden

Farm Front
(Continued from Page 1)

The 2010 Census counted everyone in my house but not the people living in my garden. There are at least 15.
Many of these people are no longer in this world, but live on in the flowers, trees, vegetables and shrubs they gave me and my family. Let me see.. .there are daylilies from my first-grade teacher; daffodils and a yucca from Mom-ma Robinson; a Japanese maple given by a professor when I graduated from college; a fountain-like
December Garden Chores
Root crops, such as beets, carrots, radishes and turnips, can survive in the soil through the winter if you mulch them properly. Apply a six-to-eight-inch layer of leaves, pine needles or straw to insulate the soil from freezing temperatures. You can then harvest the crops as needed.
December is a good time to purchase camellias as they will be in bloom and allow you to see the colors and bloom shapes so you can select the ones you want.
If you would like to add some trees and shrubs to your landscape, consider planting some that will vrovide food for birds. Some good choides that will attract birds are crabapple, dogwood, hawthorn, holly and pyracantha.
Late December is a good time to prune muscadine vines as they will lose less sap at that time. Cut back the long canes from this season's growth so that you leave only a small portion of the stem with two to four buds. The new growth from these buds will produce fruit the following growing season.
NASS Survey
(Continued from Page 1)
the number of milk cows in the herd. number of cows milked and total milk production for the f i s t day of the month. In April and October, information collected includes milk used on the farm for food or drink and the amount fed to calves.
The monthly Milk Production report is relied upon by the dairy industry to project future supplies of milk and milk products. By participating in the survey, milk producers can ensure that the most accurate and timely data are readily available, which ensures sound decision-making.
In addition, NASS will call on nearly 50,000 cattle operations nationwide during January to report the latest and most accurate data on cattle inventories and calf production.
"The January Cattle Survey provides Georgia producers the opportunity to serve as the frontline source of data on cattle," Kleweno said. "In Georgia, we'll be contacting about 1,100 operations in order to measure trends in beef and dairy cattle inventories, calf crop and cattle
operations ."
The information is a critical decisionmaking tool for the cattle industry, he explained. "For instance, it helps producers make informed marketing decisions and plan for herd expansion or reduction. It also helps packers and government evaluate expected slaughter volume for future months and determine potential supplies for export," Kkweno said.
To make it as easy as possible for producers to participate, NASS offers the option of responding via telephone, mail,

plumbago from my allergist; Egyptian walking onions from an uncle; 'Aloha', a 1949 hybrid tea rose from an aunt; English boxwoods from Uncle Bob Keever, the great-uncle who taught me how to root cuttings of shrubs; sunflowers and rose campion from Hettie and Luther Yarborough, my "adopted" grandparents next door; ferns, trilliums and red spider lilies from Tony Clack, my friend and favorite Cabbagetown neighbor; and others from friends and relatives.
There is a maxim I have heard all my life: "I've never met a stingy gardener." Whether it is watermelons and tomatoes from the vegetable garden or a start of a flower or shrub, gardeners always share. The people who gave me plants, cuttings and seeds did so because they wanted to share a favorite plant with someone who was interested. They gave me something more valuable than the plants, though, especially those who shared plants with me as a young person. They gave me the joy of gardening and of sharing. They gave me

a sense of importance and confidence - that I was worthy of their attention and worthy of taking care of a valued plant. They also gave me a garden composed of memories as much as of trees and flowers. When I walk through it, I see faces and hear voices; I never garden alone.
Create a more beautiful world and a living legacy by sharing the joy of gardening. I may never get a statue or be honored on a postage stamp, but I'll be more than happy with the memorial of someone saying, "Arty gave me that; every time it blooms I think of him."
"Arty's Garden" is written by Arty Schronce, Director of Public Affairsfor the Georgia Department of Agriculture and a lifelong gardener. Arty is a horticulture graduate of North Carolina State University. He lives and gardens in the historic Cabbagetown neighborhood of Atlanta and encourages all Georgians to discover the pleasures of plants and gardening.
