* Only farmland may be advertised. Land tracts must be at least five acres in size and located in Georgia.

Conner recently announced the appointment of 17 members and 17 alternate members to the Cotton Board, as well as one vacant alternate member position created by a resignation.
Beginning January 1, the Cotton Board will consist of 37 representatives of cotton producers and importers, their alternates and one consumer advisor. The members and alternates will serve a three year term, ending Dec. 31,2010.
Members re-appointed from Georgia were Van F. Murphy of Quitman, and Werner Bieri of Maysville. The re appointed alternate member from Georgia was Richard L. Moss of Doerun.
The cotton research and promotion program is designed to advance the position of cotton in the market place. It is funded by assessments on all domestically produced cotton and

With winter now underway, many consumers are in the market for firewood. To reduce the likelihood of a problem at the time of purchase and pick up or delivery of firewood, both buyers and sellers should be familiar with Georgia Department of Agriculture regulations governing firewood sales.

Division, wood of any type sold as fuel for fireplaces or stoves must be sold by the cord or cubic measure. A cord is defined as 128 cubic feet of wood stacked by the line or row in a compact manner with individual pieces touching. The cord can be four feet high, four feet wide and eight feet long, or any combination of these measurements (height, width and length) that yield 128 cubic feet of firewood (4 ft. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. = 128 cubic feet).
Although consumers can easily measure the height and width of a cord of wood, they should pay particular attention to the depth of the cord. For instance, to provide a depth of 4 feet (48 inches), it would take two rows of wood cut into lengths of 24 inches or 3 rows of wood cut into lengths of 16 inches.
"Terms such as truckload, face cord and rack are not legally recognized measurements for advertising firewood,"

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/
registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings tor publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanteiJ by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Recipe Correction
The instructions for the fudge icing recipe that appeared in the Jan. 2, 2008, issue of the Market Bulletin included the following statement: When mixture bubbles around the edges, remove from heat and stir in the remaining sugar, vanilla and salt. The words "remaining sugar" should not have been included in the instructions. All of the sugar is added earlier in the instructions and there is no remaining sugar to be added. The editor regrets any confusion caused by the error.
Spicy Grilled Chicken Breast with Corn Relish
1 tablespoon light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, pounded to 1/4 -inch thick
Combine spices in a small bowl. Rub over both sides of pounded chicken breasts.
Grill over hot fire for 3 minutes on each side. Serve with Corn Relish. Yield: 4 servings.
Corn Relish
2 (11-ounce) cans whole kernel sweet corn, drained 1 cup diced red bell pepper 3 tablespoons chopped onion 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 2 tablespoons lime juice 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Serve with Spicy Grilled Chicken Breasts.
Yield: 2 cups.

AG SEED FOR SALE
It you have questions regarding this category, call Rosemary Perryman at 404651-9081 or 404-651-9082.______________
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-3635.

Georgia Organics Announces

-- Pick Your Own Strawberries --

Dates for Annual Conference

More than 500 people are expected to take a quantum leap into the fastest growing sector in agriculture when they converge on Dalton, Ga., February 28 March 1, for the Georgia Organics 11th Annual Conference.
"It's the largest sustainable agriculture gathering in Georgia," says Alice Rolls, executive director of Georgia Organics. "Many of the presenters are nationally recognized experts in sustainable food and farms, and we're delighted to have the opportunity to share their experiences and advice with both farmers and consumers in our region." Attendees can choose from over 30 educational sessions and four farm tours to tailor their learning to meet their needs.
This year's conference, "Quantum Leap: Taking Food & Farms Back to the Future," features George Siemon, CEO of the Organic Valley Family of Farms, the largest organic dairy cooperative in the U.S. A champion for sustainable family farms for nearly twenty years, Siemon will be delivering the conference's keynote presentation at Friday evening's Organic Banquet.
The event isn't just for farmers: in addition to sustainable growing and farming methods, sessions focus on food preparation, building local food systems, and effective grassroots advocacy.

Honeybee Project Provides Education to Children

The Honeybee Project is a children's

environmental education project that is

raising money to create two things: (1) a

complete set of classroom materials on the

honeybee (K-6) that will be available to

schools, libraries, museums, 4H clubs,

agricultural extension offices, bee

associations, and any children's

educational entity that might benefit from

them, and (2) a museum exhibition on the

honeybee in conjunction with their partner,

The North Carolina Arboretum, which will

eventually travel around the U.S. for ten

years, three cities a year. While this project

is being produced through the collaboration

of Southeastern beekeepers, educators,

scientists, multi-media people and museum

designers, it will be a national offering.

For more information about this non

project,

Debra Roberts at 828-712-0880.

Georgia Organics is also partnering with Slow Food Atlanta to host a track of educational sessions and one of the conference's four farm tours. Other conference firsts include a new Farm-toSchool interactive educational track using a curriculum that teaches children about the importance of local farms and understanding where their food comes from.
"With organic product sales growing at 20 percent per year and thephenomenal interest in locally grown food, opportunities are increasing for farmers and communities throughout the state," says Rolls. "This conference will help farmers, community planners, and consumers gather the information, connections, and skills they need to bring economic prosperity to rural communities, and wholesome, healthy food to citizens."
Full details on the conference are available at www.georgiaorganics.org/ conference. Early bird registration rates expire Febmary 1,2008.

Forestry Commission. The program helps

landowners to implement practices that can

minimize damage caused to their pine

that were impacted by the insect this past

summer.

Practices

available

include:

noncommercial thinning (to reduce the

number of stems per acre to an optimum

level), release treatments (which remove

unwanted species from the stand and lower

the number of stems per acre), prescribed

burning, southern pine beetle suppression

(to stop the active spread of an infestation),

and replanting stands that were harvested

due to southern pine beetles. These practices result in healthier stands
of timber that will increase in value and provide wildlife benefits for many species including deer, turkey and quail. Interested landowners should contact their local Georgia Forestry Commission office for more information or log on to: http://www.gatrees.org/ForestManagement /spb.cfm. Applications are made through the GFC forester that oversees the county where the property is located.
According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, the Southern Pine Beetle is the most destructive forest pest in the southeastern U.S. and has caused more than $250 million in losses in Georgia since 1972.

NAP Application Closing Date Set

For Spring, Fall Annual Crops

Producers in need of insurance coverage for spring and fall annually planted crops under the Noninsured Crop Assistance Program (NAP) have until Jan. 31,2008, to apply for certain crops for which the catastrophic level of insurance is not available, according to Susan D. Holmes, State Executive Director for the Georgia Farm Service Agency (FSA).
"Crop insurance is an important risk management tool for farmers," said Holmes, "but it's not available for all crops. That's why NAP is so important."
NAP is a federally funded program that provides financial assistance to producers of non-insurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occurs because of natural disasters.
Farm Front

imports of foreign-produced cotton and cotton-containing products, and is authorized by the Cotton Research and Promotion Act of 1966. USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service monitors the program.

"Producers must apply for coverage before disaster strikes," said Holmes.
The 2008 NAP applications for coverage on annually planted crops must be filed, and service fees paid, by Jan. 31, 2008, the application closing date. For additional information, please contact your local FSA office for specific crop application sales closing dates.
"Like regular crop insurance, once an application period closes, the opportunity to obtain coverage is gone," Holmes said.
NAP coverage requires a service fee of $ 100 per crop, per producer with a $300 cap per county. Out-of-pocket expenses will not exceed $900 for any producer, even if production occurs in more than three counties. Service fees may be waived for eligible limited resource producers.
Crops eligible for NAP coverage are those for which crop insurance is not available, and include fruits and vegetables, aquaculture, pecans, turf grass and forage crops. Application closing dates vary by crop, and producers should contact their local Farm Service Agency county office for details.
More information on NAP and additional disaster assistance programs is available online at: http://www.fsa.usda.goy
