My vegetable garden is located near a busy road and I am concerned about my crops becoming contaminated by auto emissions. Is there something I can do to prevent this, or at least lessen it?
According to researchers at Cornell University, lead and cadmium, which are the most hazardous components of auto exhaust, can be washed off the surface of your crops. Mix about 2-1/2 tablespoons of vinegar or half that amount of dishwashing liquid per gallon of water and wash the produce with it.
Pollutants absorbed from the soil cannot be washed away. Experts recommend keeping the pH of the soil above 6.5 and adding plenty of organic matter to prevent absorption of lead and cadmium.

Farm Safety Week Observes 50th Year
September 19-25 has been designated by the National Safety Council as National Farm Safety and Health Week. This year's 50th anniversary theme is "Safety and Health...Agriculture's Future."
Largest Ga. Prison Farm Celebrates 10th Year
Two-thirds of the food on a Georgia inmate's plate is grown on prison farms, and in September, the largest prison farming operation in Georgia is celebrating a decade of helping to fill those plates.
Rogers Correctional Institution, a medium-security facility located in Reidsville, is the top operation in a state-owned prison farming network that helped produce food for 27.2 million inmate meals in Georgia in 1992.
Because of heavy reliance on inmate labor at Rogers CI and eight other prison farms, the Georgia Department of Corrections is able to feed more than 30,000 inmates in the prison system three meals a day for an average of 61 cents per meal.
"We are confident that we are meeting the constitutional requirement to feed our offenders nutritionally-sound meals, but we also are confident that we are doing so as cheaply as possible through our prison farming system," said Corrections Commissioner Dr. Alien L. Ault.
Opened in 1983 with 489 inmates, Rogers CI today houses 1,000 inmates who help to grow crops

"Safety and Health...Agriculture's Future" is the 1993 theme for the 50th Anniversary observance of National Farm Safety and Health Week, designated for September 1925.
The National Safety Council, sponsor of the annual safety week, promotes the objective that all citizens in the U.S. should be concerned about agricultural production and its strength in the world

marketplace. Research shows that each farmer and rancher in the nation now feeds about 100 persons with prospects looking good for expanding those numbers, thanks to new technologies.
The main thrust of this year's observance focuses on child, tractor and chemical safety on farms and ranches. According to the safety council, a majority of accidents which result in injury or death on the farm can be prevented. Engineering advances coupled with educational programs can play a big part in reducing the accident levels.
The following data was provided by the National Safety Council:
--In 1992, an estimated 140,000 disabling injuries occurred as a result of agricultural accidents.
-Agricultural industries, including farming, have the highest death rate of any industry division in 1992.
-Incidents on tractors are the leading causes of accidental death and injury on the farm.
-Work-related deaths of farmers

Poultry Industry Celebrated During September Observance
While Georgia proudly carries the title of "Peach State," the broiler sector now "rules the roost" in terms of commodity cash receipts, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
"In less than 50 years, our state's broiler industry has evolved from scattered backyard flocks to one of the most efficient sectors in Georgia agriculture," said Irvin. "Last year, our state ranked second nationally in the total value of production of all poultry, as well as second in the value of broiler and egg production."
During National Chicken Month, observed each September, Georgia will join other states in promoting the impact of the industry to the national economy, as well as the benefits of including chicken as part of a healthy diet plan.
This year, the average American will eat, for the 13th consecutive year, a record amount of chicken. In 1993, the average per capita consumption of chicken is expected to reach at least 71 pounds -- 50 percent greater than the amount consumed in the late-1970s and double the level of the late-1960s. Not only is chicken a healthy menu alternative, it is one of the best food values in the marketplace.
The Georgia broiler industry produced 894.6 million broilers in 1992, a record high for the 10th consecutive year. The total farm value of poultry and eggs produced in Georgia amounted to $1.57 billion for the 1992 production year, which is more than 37 percent of the state's total farm income.

Hog Killin' Time
Start the fire, throw on a log, Time for the Taylors to kill some hogs. Boil that water, sharpen that knife, You're 'bout to experience the time of your life. Load up the rifle, - ready, aim, fire The poor little pigs are about to retire. Cut'em, scald'em, scrape off the hair, Knowledge of hog killin' is an art that's rare. Cut out the ribs, the backbones, too, Cut out the tenderloins, you're halfway through. Trim that fat and cut it for lard, Gather more water from the spigot in the yard, Grinding sausage takes a master's skill, Served with a biscuit, what a tasty meal! Just about finished, oh, so nice, Wait just a minute, grind mine twice! "Paw" was a specialist in this art, so rare, It's not quite the same, since he's not there, But what a tradition, he taught us so well, Memories of "hog killin' " our children we'll tell.
Peggy Flowers Taylor Stockbridge (1989)
AUTUMN
Beside the road, tall Joe-Pye weeds Their soft pink heads are bending;
With goldenrod, they say to us That summer days are ending.
It won't be long until the frost Caresses fields and flowers; Through winter's chilly days, we'll think Of autumn's golden hours.
We live in such a wondrous world Where season follows season;
When changes come, we'll welcome them For many and many a reason.

Market Bulletin Readers Share Wonders of their
Gardens
It looks like they grow some pretty tall corn in McDonough, and, if you have any doubts, just ask Linton Cason about his Silver Queen crop which measured over nine feet tall. Shown is five-foot, 10-inch Cason who attributes his success to "good topsoil, good rain and the Good Lord."
Wayne Rutledge shows off this Better Boy tomato plant he grew at his home in Lithonia. When this photo was taken, the plant measured 10 feet, two inches. Just two weeks later, Rutledge said, it had grown eight more inches. To contact Wayne or Sheila Rutledge, call 404-482-4173.
Nathan Grannick of Duluth grew this Amorphophallus Riverii or Voodoo Lily which measured 80 inches tall and lasted several days.
The flower came from a bulb about eight years old.
Ralph Presley recently grew some rather unique-looking vegetables at his farm in Newnan. Shown at left is a potato which looks like
a duck. The other vegetable Presley is holding is actually a combination of a cantaloupe and cucumber, according to Presley's wife,
Alice, who said it grew with the cantaloupes, but the cukes were close by. Maybe it's a "cuculope."
Tom Wells of Winder is surrounded by his garden treasures: Cleome bushes and Jerusalem cherries.
Brantley Holbrook grew this Silver Queen corn at his home in Jackson County.
This sunflower sprang up in the garden of Herman Keaton, Jr. of Morrow. The photo, which also shows Keaton's granddaughter, Ashley Keaton, was taken when the flower first started to bloom. When it was full, it had almost 100 blooms, five or six on each branch.
Dorothy Duncan, a retired home economics teacher in Whitfield County, not only does her own sewing, designing and housework, but even has a green thumb when it comes to growing tomatoes which she shares with her neigh-
bors and friends.

Examples of Xeriscape-
type landscapes can be found throughout Georgia. In the metro Atlanta area, Post Properties manages 29
apartment complexes with over 9,000 units. Their land scapes have revolutionized the look of residential and
commercial properties. Once established, only 10 percent of their landscapes receive supplementary water. They developed this style to not only conserve water, but to reduce maintenance costs.
The City of Alpharetta has a Xeriscape-type land scape installed at a highlyvisible location at a fire sta tion. The City of Marietta
has such a landscape at its popular Glover Park at Marietta Square, as does the City of Smyrna at its
new library and community center. Also, Georgia Tech will be using Xeriscape landscapes in its construc

To promote water conser vation education, the Geor

Turkey Federation Releases New Recipe Contest Brochure
Teens and turkey are a winning combination, according to the Na tional Turkey Federation, Hundreds of school kids were talk ing -- and making -- turkey recipes this past spring in hopes of winning the grand prize of $2,000 in the "National Turkey Lovers' Recipe Contest For Teens," ages 12 to 18.
Students had to dazzle judges with an original, tasty and easy-toprepare recipe using at least one pound of fresh or fully-cooked tur key meat.
"We received almost 1,700 en tries from across the country, and the recipes were excellent," said Teresa Farney, NTF president of consumers affairs. "The recipes were not only creative, but also demonstrated the versatility of tur key products."
The ten prize winning recipes have been featured in NTF's newest brochure, "Teen Cuisine News." To obtain a free copy of the recipe brochure, send a self-addressed, stamped, business-size (#10) enve lope to: Teen Brochure, National Turkey Federation, 11321 Sunset Hills Road, Reston, VA 22090.
Groundwater Groundwater, like all water on earth, comes from precipitation -- rain and snowfall. It percolates un derground, first entering the water table. In many cases, groundwater remains undistributed for years, even centuries, before it is used. There is a great deal of groundwa ter -- far more than what is availa ble from lakes or rivers on the surface. In fact, more than 90 per cent of the world's total supply of drinkable water is groundwater, say water quality experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service.
