Farm Front
The University of Georgia College of Agriculture will coordinate the "1990 Farm Bill and Outlook Conference," a program scheduled for four sites Jan. 16 and 17 and Feb. 5 and 6.
The farm bill and outlook conferences are set for Jan. 16 at the Southern Center for Continuing Education in Statesboro; Jan. 17 at the Turner County Civic Center in Ashburn; Feb. 5 at the Rich Building in the Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton; and Feb. 6 at the Westcott Building at Berry College in Rome.
The program will begin with 8:30 a.m. registration and coffee at each site and will end at 3:30 p.m. A $5 early fee, or $7 at the door, will cover all costs.
Extension Service specialists and officials with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service will lead sessions on livestock and crop outlooks, farm input costs and farm bill provisions.
To learn more about the program, or to get a preregistration form, contact county Extension offices, or call the East Georgia Extension Conferences office at (912) 681-5189.
Farmers Market Helps
Tree Recycling Effort
Hundreds of unsold Christmas trees at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market in Forest Park, Ga., will be recycled in an effort to divert the holiday symbols from local landfills, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The leftover trees will be chipped and utilized as mulch by Clayton County and the City of Atlanta. In addition, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will be using the trees in lakes and ponds throughout the state to create a natural refuge for fish and other aquatic wildlife.
"With so many of our state's landfills being overloaded, we are pleased that our agency can be a part of such recycling efforts," Irvin said.
State Agriculture Department Inspects Fuel-Related Products
Now that cold weather has arrived, Georgians need to know that their motor vehicles are protected. Also, homeowners who use kerosene heaters will want to have an adequate supply of fuel on hand for emergencies.
Fortunately, the Georgia Department of Agriculture works yearround to ensure that all motor fuels and related products such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, motor oil
and antifreeze sold in the state are registered and tested to perform as promised.
Antifreeze quality is one subject
consumers should not have to worry about, according to Georgia Commissioner cf Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Before the department be-
came involved in antifreeze regulation over 15 years ago, some spurious engine protection products left Georgia motorists with cracked engine blocks.
When the state legislature authorized the department to register and test antifreeze products, Geor-
gia's program became a model for other states to follow. Today, problems with antifreeze quality have been virtually eliminated, Irvin
said. Before any antifreeze can be sold
in the state, the brand must be registered with the department's Fuel and Measures Division and a sample analyzed in the department's fuel oil laboratory in Forest Park.
Samples are tested for composition as well as chemical and physical properties. Ethylene glycol is the essential active ingredient in automotive antifreeze.
Since alcohol-based engine coolants are not suitable for use in automotive engines, this type of antifreeze is illegal for sale.
The freezing point of the sample is checked, as well as the boiling point, since all automotive anti-
While a trained observer can detect gross discoloration or impurities in kerosene, each sample is subjected to complete laboratory analysis for composition, flash point and other criteria.

Q: I tried to find some information on the origin of canola oil, but my search was unsuccessful. Does it have another name besides canola?
A: The oil comes from the canola plant, which is a type of rapeseed. It is a member of the Brassica family, which includes mustard, as well as broccoli and cabbage. The plant reaches a height of about 4-6 feet and produces yellow flowers and seed pods. The seeds are removed upon reaching maturity and are crushed to produce the oil. Meal is also obtained from the seeds and is fed to livestock and poultry.
Canola is grown and used widely in Canada, but is a fairly new product in the United States. Rapeseed oil was used here for industrial purposes, but not for human consumption. Most of our canola oil is imported from Canada, but American farmers are beginning to grow more of it here because the demand has increased rapidly over the past few years. The oil is very low in saturated fat and meal is high in protein.
If you have problems or questions concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 300, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. or call toll-free 1-800-282-5852 or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta,
freeze now doubles as engine coolant. The corrosion protection of the product is checked on the six metals commonly used in automotive cooling systems. The foaming resistance, specific gravity and pH of the sample also are tested, since all these properties affect the circulation, heat exchange and performance of the product.
If the sample meets the standards established by state regulations, a written license or permit authorizing wholesale and retail sale of the brand of antifreeze will be issued. The license or permit is subject to renewal annually. Thus far, 53 brands of antifreeze have been re-

for sale in Georgia must bear a label listing the name and address of the manufacturer or distributor, as well as a use statement or protection chart which informs the user of the degree of protection offered when the product is used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Containers of five gallons or more may be accompanied by a use statement or a freeze protection chart in lieu of the label on the container. In addition, the type of glycol or other base must be indicated.

State Agriculture Department Inspects Fuel-Related Products
Since licenses are renewed an nually, and manufacturers may market several brands of antifreeze, consumers should recognize the names on the product label. By following safety and use instruc tions, most problems can be avoided.
Because antifreeze is manufac tured under close quality-control su pervision and heavily packaged in convenient, one-gallon containers, product contamination is rarely a problem. Kerosene, on the other hand, presents a different set of considerations for consumers, as well as department inspectors.
Under state regulations, all wholesale and retail sellers of kero sene must register their products with the state fuel oil chemist and

While most people are familiar with the darker color and distinc

If kerosene is found to be contam inated, the affected pumps are locked down and stop sale orders are issued until the problem is corrected. The department utilizes all available news media to contact people who may have purchased contaminated products.
Consumers who desire more in formation or who suspect that they may have purchased improperly la beled or contaminated kerosene may contact the Georgia Depart ment of Agriculture, Fuel and Mea sures Division, Capitol Square, At lanta, Ga. 30334, (404) 656-3605, or 1-800-282-5852.
