FHA Salutes Vo-Education
The Georgia Future Homemakers of America (FHA) is proud that Feb. 8-14 has been designated National FHA/HERO Week. During this time FHA/HERO chapters across
the nation will join together to salute vocational education.
This observance provides Future Homemakers the opportunity to impress upon community decision makers, politicians, parents and potential members the value and necessity of vocational training as part of a person's total education. Through its projects, activities, and events, our group demonstrates how young people acquire leadership skills they can use in the home, work place and community.
Our guest columnist this week is Janet Jackson, president, Georgia Association of Future Homemakers of America, Route 9, Box 227, Dublin 31021.
The Georgia Association has six state projects: The Inez MurrayJanet Barber-Daisy Lewis Scholarships; Camp An Unforgettable Experience; Link Up: FHA Membership Drive; Hands Across Georgia; Families and Future; and Careers in Home Economics. Chapters can use these projects in many different ways to demonstrate this year's theme, "America at Its Best."
We observe FHA/HERO Week because we are proud of our organization, which has been serving teens for over 40 years. As an extension of the home economics curriculum, FHA makes learning real and gives us the chance to make a difference in society through our community service projects.
Recently the editors of Good Housekeeping magazine named Future Homemakers of America "one of the most successful and enduring volunteer organizations in the United States" and listed us among "20 of the best known service groups." We are proud to be one of the groups chosen for its community service contributions and honored as epitomizing "America at Its Best."

Preparation Best Defense Against Spring Tornadoes
Tornadoes pose a serious threat to the lives and livelihoods of Georgians. With this thought in mind, Governor Joe Frank Harris has proclaimed Feb. 23-27 as Tornado Awareness Week in Georgia.
Since March, April and May are the most likely months for tornadoes to strike Georgia, citizens should begin now becoming familiar with tornado safety measures.
Review the following terms and guidelines so that you will be prepared when tornado season arrives.
* A tornado watch means that tornadoes are expected to develop. Keep a battery-powdered radio or television nearby and listen for the latest weather reports.
* A tornado warning is issued when a tornado actually has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Immediately seek shelter in a storm cellar or the center interior of a reinforced building. Stay away from windows. Get under a heavy table or curl up so that head and eyes are protected.

Research Efforts Important To Georgia's Egg Industry

Georgia's egg industry has flourished through the years, but not without the efforts of dedicated researchers in such fields as poultry science, management and marketing.
Several research projects now underway should further enhance Georgia's competitive edge in the market place. For example, the result of two of the studies will enable the industry to more accurately evaluate the nutrient content of various feed ingredients used in commercial layer operations and to better determine the protein and energy requirements of laying hens.
According to Dr. Nick Dale, assistant professor of poultry science at UGA's Extension Poultry Science Department, the studies are needed because most of the information tables now in use by the industry are outdated. "Most of the data on the value of feeds was done 25 years ago," said Dale. "In addition to the time factor, the origins of the feeds tested differed greatly from feeds available in the Southeast," he added. Most of the prior research was conducted at Cornell University, the University of Connecticut and in Canada.
Georgia Commissioner of Agricul ture Tommy Irvin (right) was re cently presented with certification of Georgia's Tuberculosis-free sta tus from USDA Animal/Plant Health Inspection Service Adminis trator Bert Hawkins. Announce ment of Georgia's status was made in October, 1986, and the final paperwork was completed for the January presentation in Atlanta.

Since those tests were conducted, there have been a number of advances in plant genetics which must be taken into consideration when feeds are assessed, Dale said. "When we evaluate feeds, we can't look at just the total energy content of the feeds," he noted, "because a lot of energy is not digested by the layer." Dale explained that samples are evaluated for total energy content before feeding to the birds. The excrement is later tested to determine how much energy was actually digested.
Since Midwest egg producers are close to grain sources, they have a definite cost advantage over producers in the Southeast. "If we can use local ingredients with maximum efficiency, our producers will have a better advantage in the market place," Dale said.
At the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin, Dr. Gene Pesti, associate professor of poultry science and animal nutrition, is working to develop a model for protein and energy requirements of laying hens. His research involves gathering data daily from more than 700 hens to evaluate the protein and energy requirements of the birds at peak and low laying periods. Dr. Bill Miller, UGA ag economist, is scheduled to do a study on the economics of the program.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Page 7

ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the special equine edition's "At Stud" category.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this
publication.

In observance of February Egg Month, try the following "eggcellent" tips when utilizing this important Georgia commodity.
Use a glass or metal bowl instead of plastic when beating eggwhites. Plastic tends to retain grease which can prevent whites from whipping properly.
To clean up a raw egg which has been dropped on the floor, sprinkle salt over the mess and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. It should easily sweep up with a broom.
When you are making deviled eggs, slice off a tiny piece from the rounded bottom of each hard boiled half so that it will stay upright and in place.
When transporting deviled eggs, wrap individually in plastic wrap gathered loosely around the top and place in an egg carton. This helps keep them separate and upright.
If you are separating eggs and some yolk slips into the whites, scoop it out with the eggshell. It acts as a magnet to draw out the yolk.
Salt toughens eggs. If possible add it to egg dishes after they are cooked.
Make your own egg poacher by removing the top and bottom of a tuna can. Set the ring in a skillet of water and crack eggs into it.
Egg stains should be soaked in cold water before laundering since hot water will set them in.
Since eggs beat to a greater volume when warm, place in a bowl of warm water several minutes before cracking and separating.
To prevent eggs from cracking when hard cooking, pierce the rounded end of the shell with a needle.

Preparation Best Defense
(Continued from Page 1)
* If you are in an office building, go to an interior hallway on the lowest floor or to a designated shel ter area.
* In homes, the basement offers the greatest protection. If possible, get under heavy furniture to protect your head and eyes.
* In homes without basements, take cover in a small room, such as a closet or bathroom, on the lowest floor. Try to get under sturdy furni ture and stay away from windows.
* If you are caught in a shopping center go to a disignated shelter. Do not stay in your car.
* Immediately evacuate mobile homes when strong winds or torna does are forecast. If there are no storm shelters nearby, leave the mobile home park and take cover on low, protected ground.
* Do not try to outrun a tornado in an automobile. Instead, seek shelter if available or take cover on low protected ground.
Lightning and flooding often accompany thunderstorms asso ciated with tornadoes. Therefore, become familiar with the following guidelines:
* While in an indoor shelter, stay away from electrical appliances when the storm is overhead.
* If forced to take shelter out doors, stay away from high conduc tive objects such as single trees and power poles.
* If you live in a flash flood area, stay tuned to your radio or televi sion station for information on pos sible flooding.
* Be alert to rapidly rising water if you take shelter in a ditch during a tornado warning. Move to a safer location as soon as possible.
Tornado Facts * Tornadoes usually are short lived -- most touch down for periods of 10 minutes or less -- and are erratic and unpredictable. * Tornadoes produce wind speeds of up to 300 miles per hour, and sound much like roaring jet engines or rumbling freight trains. * Tornadoes usually travel at speeds from 35 to 45 miles per hour in a path averaging about nine miles long and 10 yards to a mile wide. * Most tornadoes come from the southwest and move in a northeast erly direction.
