Improved Markets and Prices Provide Bright Outlook for Cotton
Although Georgia's cotton acreage has been on the increase in recent years, extreme weather conditions have greatly reduced this year's production. In fact a number of acres were declared a loss and destroyed.
But cotton should continue to be an attractive crop for farmers due to improved prices under the cotton program and an increase in cotton exports. According to Dr. Johnny Crawford, Extension plant patholo-
gist, Tifton, acreage is expected to reach 250,000 again next year, the same as in 1985.
Farmers have returned to cotton as an alternative to other crops, especially corn and soybeans. Cotton has a natural advantage over these crops because it has a good tolerance for dry periods. However, this year's drought was severe enough to reduce yields considerably.
According to Dr. J. B. Weaver, agronomist at the University of Georgia's College Experiment Station in Athens, many farmers would have been better off if they had planted skip-row cotton. In a dry year, if cotton is planted solid (over the entire field), the plants tend to reach a certain growth level and stop growing, Weaver explained.
Most cotton farmers would like to harvest a cotton crop like the one shown above at the recent Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie. But this year's weather conditions have reduced the state's cotton crop to 180,000 bales, 51 percent below last year. According to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service in Athens, the yield is force ast at 432 pounds per acre, 293 pounds or 40 percent below the yield for 1985.
Skip-row planting allows the roots to spread out in the open row providing more soil moisture and nutrients to the plants. The method also allows more aeration of cotton bolls, thereby reducing the forma-
tion of diseases such as tight lock boll and boll rot.
Crawford noted that growers should not expect to make as much cotton on a field of skip-row cotton compared to solid, but they will have better yields on the cotton that is produced. Both specialists agreed that planting skip row was a form of "insurance" during a dry year. "In a dry year, skip row is better than solid," Crawford said. "But under ideal conditions, the yield will be even better."
The feasibility of skip row planting depends on land availability, current farm programs, and crop prices, according to Crawford. Since ASCS regulations are subject to change, he recommends growers consult their local ASCS office before adopting a skip row practice.
Although Georgia's climate usually is well suited for cotton, and the crop has done well traditionally, growers have suffered low prices due to increased competition from other states and foreign countries. However, some of these producers
now are reducing their production, thus opening export and domestic markets for Georgia cotton. For example, some western states are facing higher irrigation and land

Please have one of your food scientists analyze these breakfast bars. I opened one and it was full of insects. What can you do about this?
Upon receiving your breakfast bars, they were immediately taken to our food lab. According to our analyst, the product you submitted was heavily infested with Indian meal moth larvae and adults. Webbing and insect excreta also was present. We sent one of our sanitarians to the store where you made your purchase and pulled several boxes of the product. All of these samples were normal. We're sorry you had this experience, but hope it was an isolated incident. We also have notified the manufacturer of our findings.

Ga. Farmers Finalists For Conservation Award
Robert and Billy Greer of Hampton are among 10 finalists announced recently in a national awards program designed to recognize outstanding soil and water conservation practices.
The Greers were selected for their innovative soil and water conservation techniques used to manage dairy waste and control soil erosion on their dairy, millet, corn and wheat farm. Their farm often is used to demonstrate practical conservation techniques and frequently is included in farm tours.
A technical advisory committee reviewed the conservation work of the state winners, recommending the national finalists on the basis of their accomplishments in comprehensive soil and water resource management and pollution abatement. Three national winners will be selected and awarded $1000 each later this year.
The awards program is designed to help make farmers, ranchers and

Utilize Compost to Improve Soil Condition
Compost offers several advantages to the home gardener or small-scale farmer. Not only is it valuable as an organic fertilizer, it also conditions the soil, helps control soil pH, and allows free choice feeding for plants.
One attribute of compost is that it helps retain soil nutrients. Commercial fertilizers usually provide doses of three main nutrients: phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Such fertilizers are highly water soluable, and are taken up quickly by plant roots; however, they are often washed away by rain or irrigation. Humus, the broken down organic matter that is the end product of composting, helps hold the nutrients, releasing them slowly to the plants.
To make certain your compost contains these three essential nutrients, use the following organic matter in your compost mix. Bone meal and rock phosphate are sources of phosphorus; green wastes, such as grass clippings, green leaves, and animal manures, provide nitrogen; and potash is a
good source of potassium. If soil is too acid or alkaline,
many nutrients often are locked into the soil where they are unavailable to plants. Adding compost can help neutralize the soil to a favorable pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
When soil contains an excessive amount of clay, a common problem in the South, plant roots have difficulty penetrating the soil. The roots remain shallow and cannot reach the deeper water reserves. They also have difficulty getting oxygen in tightly packed soil.
Sandy soils pose an equally serious problem. All the nutrients and water keep soaking down out of reach by the roots. Compost helps solve both problems: it helps break up clay soils and improves the moisture holding capacity of loose soils. Moisture, food and air are all held in the soil so that plants have access to them as needed.
By adding compost to your soil, you will find the soil not only more productive but also easier to work.

ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the special equine edition's "At Stud" category.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this publication.

Helping "Each Other
Dear Editor: Over the years, my wife and I have collected many old
interesting remedies, recipes, folklore, etc. We were wondering if some of your readers might have such information they would share with us.
Jim Gibboney (Editor's Note: Send your remedies and other folklore to the Market Bulletin office. We will forward the information on the Mr. Gibboney and also include some of this information in the paper.) Dear Editor: The Atlanta Historical Society is seeking artifacts to build its permanent collections and to help preserve more tangible history. We would like to add small agricultural implements, made or retailed in the Atlanta area before 1940, to our collections. Plows, saws, axes, and feed bags with the names of Atlanta companies are examples of the types of items we need. In addition, a small cotton gin or the nameplate from a larger gin also is wanted for our exhibits. If you have any such items you would consider donating, please let me know.

Outlook for Cotton
(Continued from Page 1)
costs and Texas is beginning to experience the effects of the boll weevil.
The cotton price outlook also is brighter. With the cotton program now in effect, U.S. cotton is now more competitive on world markets. And even though prices of synthetic fibers are down, due to lower oil prices, mill use of cotton is up. According to George Westberry, Extension agronomist at Tifton, U.S. mills are using more cotton now than any year since 1980. Westbery noted that projected cotton futures prices look good for 1987 and that growers under the cotton program should fair better.
"If you have a base, cotton is a good crop to grow in 1987," he said. "If not, you need to figure your costs carefully before planting." Westberry pointed out that cotton can be expensive to grow during hard economic times. "When farmers are deciding between crops to plant, they often choose the one that is cheapest to plant," he noted. "But you need to look more closely at the profitability of the crops, not just on a per acre basis, but on a per farm basis. There's just no point in planting something you can't make a profit on."
Growers interested in the latest recommendations for cotton production in Georgia should contact their local Extension office for a cotton production package. The package is revised every year and can be refined to fit a farmer's particular situation.
Also of interest to farmers is the cotton production shortcourse scheduled for January 16 in Tifton. The course will emphasize the cotton outlook, marketing and production. Further information about the course will be printed in an upcoming edition of the Market Bulletin.

Halloween Do
You can have a festive jack-o'lantern and enjoy pumpkin pie too, with the correct preparation techniques. When making your jack-o'lantern, scoop out most of the pulp before you begin your carving efforts. If you wait until after Halloween, it will spoil. As an alternative, you can use felt tip markers to decorate your jacko'-lantern, so the pumpkin can be used later for cooking.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that ghosts and goblins wear a natural mask of cosmetics, rather than a loose fitting mask which might obscure vision or restrict breathing. For example, you can make homemade grease-paint by mixing the following ingredients: two teaspoons white shortening, five teaspoons corn starch, one teaspoon white flour and a few drops of glycerin. Blend shortening, corn starch and flour. Mix in glycerin to make it spread easily. You can add a few drops of cocoa or food coloring for tinted grease-paint. You also can create realistic warts for witches and goblins by mixing together peanut butter and coconut.
Almost all clothing fabrics burn to some extent, but gauzy or synthetic materials may flame rapidly and should not be used for children's costumes. Homemade costumes can be temporarily flame-proofed by mixing three ounces of boric acid, seven ounces of borax and two quarts of water. Soak material in this mixture and let drip dry. The material will resist fire until it is washed or wet by rain.

Grandpa's Use Chalnsaw with Care When Cutting Wood Supply
Garden
African violets should be repotted yearly or when the roots become pot bound. To check the root systems, gently hold the plant, turn the pot upside down, tap the rim to loosen soil from the container and lift the pot from the root ball. If root bound, transplant into a pot at least one and a half times larger than the existing container.
Now is the time to plant pansies in most parts of Georgia. They last through the winter quite well and will start blooming in early spring.
When your bromeliad has reached maturity, usually 18 months to two years after repotting it separately from the parent, cut a very ripe apple into quarters and place it with the plant in a large plastic bag. Seal for 48 hours so that the ethylene gas, a natural ripening agent given off by the apple, will have a chance to trigger the onset of flowering in the bromeliad. Remove the apple, wait six to eight weeks and flowers should begin to form.
When freezing temperatures kill your fall vegetables, do not abandon your garden. Be sure to clean up plant debris, store garden stakes (after they have been disinfected with a chlorine solution) and have a soil test taken.
Try bringing a couple of garden pepper plants indoors for the winter. When placed in a sunny window, they should continue to produce fruit and come spring, the plants can be moved outdoors.
Although you already may have enough wood for this winter, it is not too early to begin work on next year's supply.
Winter is the best time for cutting trees because the underbrush is thin and dead trees are easier to spot. Also, working conditions are more favorable since it is not as hot and biting insects are not a problem.
Although the chainsaw is the most efficient and most commonly used tool for cutting trees, it can be dangerous if not used properly. The following guidelines should help you to get the most from your saw and keep you safe from injury.
* Wear protective clothing. Clothes should be comfortable but trim fitting. Wear steel-toed boots or shoes with non-skid soles. Use
work gloves to help protect your hands from cuts and burns. Use hearing protectors, such as ear plugs, when you are exposed to prolonged chainsaw noise. And wear a hard hat to protect your head from falling branches.
* Make sure you are familiar with the saw and all of its controls, especially the cut-off switch. Read the owner's manual thoroughly. Know how to sharpen and lubricate the saw and carry the proper tools for repairs in the field. Also, carry the right gas-oil mixture for the saw.
* Try not to work alone. It is good to have another person along to assist with dangerous situations or to get help if needed.
* Do not even try to operate a chain saw if you are tired, using drugs (prescription or otherwise) or drinking.
* Never attempt to start a chainsaw on your knee or in the air. Set the saw on ground that has been
Enjoy Ga. Pumpkins During Fall Harvest
Even though Georgia pumpkin yields were lowered by the summer drought, there is still a plentiful supply available at State Farmers' Markets across the state.
Yields generally range from 800 to 1,000 pumpkins per acre, and while numbers are not off by much, weight and size are down. Even so, farmers say pumpkin prices they receive have remained stable.
Latest available pumpkin production figures are from the 1982 Census of Agriculture, which reports about two dozen commercial growers with 60 acres in cultivation, numbers which are reportedly on the rise.
Big Max and Mammoth Gold are two pumpkin varieties that Georgia growers and consumers prefer because of their characteristic large size ideal for jack-o-lanterns. Most Georgia pumpkins are grown in the northern part of the: state. The smaller varieties used for cooking and carving are shipped in from other states.
Since the majority of pumpkins, are harvested in September and October, now is an ideal time to buy in quantity and freeze the meat for future use, according to Georgia Department of Agriculture home economists. Pumpkins are primarily used in desserts such as pies,
Like many other crops, the drought impacted Georgia's fall pumpkin harvest. While yields and sizes are down, there should be plenty of pumpkins to meet consumer demands.
cakes, cookies and frosting. A variety of pumpkin recipes are available from the Georgia Department of Agriculture, by calling toll-free, 1800-282-5852.
Handicraft Edition
The next handicraft edition of the Market Bulletin will be published Nov. 19. Deadline for notices is Nov. 5.
An affidavit stating that the handicraft item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale, must be included with the notice. Otherwise, it will not be published.
cleared down to the soil. * Carry the saw by the handle
with the motor off and the guide bar to the rear. When you move from tree to tree, make sure the chain is not moving and your finger is not on the saw trigger.
* Before refueling, allow the saw time to cool. Refill on the ground in an area clear of debris which could catch fire.
* Before restarting the saw, clean up any spills and avoid the muffler as you work, in case it is still hot.
Chainsaws are used for felling, delimbing and bucking (cutting into sections) trees, and each of these operations requires the saw to be used in a different way. Many chainsaw accidents occur because these operations are not performed correctly. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when performing these tasks.
DIRECTION OFFAU.... >

1 BOTTOM OF UNKRCUT
To get the tree to fall in the right direction, make a V-cut, also called a felling notch, about a third of the way into the wood on the side that the tree most likely will fall (see diagram). Once the first cut is made, start the felling cut directly behind the notch on the opposite side of the tree. Leave approximately two inches of wood between the cuts for a hinge. This will slow the tree's fall and allow you time to get out of the way. When the tree begins to move, move away at a 45 degree angle from the direction of
the fall. If the tree does not drop, use
wedges to topple it in the desired direction. Keep in mind that, in spite of these efforts, a tree can still fall the wrong way so have a clear escape path away from the site. Also, never attempt to fell a tree
October garden Chores
Establish a strawberry patch during the fall months.
Avoid heavy pruning in early autumn.
Start groundcovers such as liriope, ajuga and mondo grass in the fall.
Dig caladiums for winter storage when the leaves begin to look faded. Remove soil from the tubers, dry 10-14 days, and dust with Sevin to prevent disease. Pack in dry peat and store in a dry location where temperatures remain above 50 F.
Begin planting Dutch bulbs when the weather turns cool.
Plant garlic now for harvest next summer.
Rake leaves, grass clippings and discarded plant material for use in composting.
Before the first frost, cut and preserve herbs that will be needed during winter.
Harvest Irish potatoes when at least 50 percent of the vines are dead. Dig sweet potatoes before frost kills the vines.
with a single cut and never try to fell a tree on a windy day.
Accidents often occur when the operator is delimbing or bucking the tree. Kickback, which is the most common accident, occurs when the tip of the saw bar contacts wood or another solid object. The saw bar is pushed away from the object when the chain hits at a certain angle. Therefore, avoid cutting with the tip of the saw and keep your left elbow locked straight when cutting. If kickback does occur, your left arm will not bend and the saw will follow an arc away from your body.
When cutting, stand to the side of the saw and always be aware of what is in the saw's downward path after the cut.
Pioneer Skills Day
Join northeast Georgia craftsmen at Victoria Bryant State Park November 1 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. as they demonstrate pioneer crafts. Sheep raising and shearing, spinning, vegetable dyeing, weaving, knitting and tatting, blacksmithing, woodcarving, beekeeping, quilting, rug braiding and open fire cooking are among the skills to be demonstrated. There will be no charge for admission. Operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Victoria Bryant State Park is located four miles west of Royston, off U.S. 29. For more information, call the park at 404/2456270.
Halloween Lore
With grinning ghosts, flying witches and glowing pumpkins, Halloween has come to be known as one of the scariest nights of the year. The name Halloween, means the evening before All Hallows or All Saints Day, once observed the first day of November. Many customs of the observance are remnants of ancient religious beliefs.

The custom of carving pumpkins also originated in Ireland. The Jack-o'lantern, our symbol of Halloween, comes from an old legend about an Irishman by the name of Jack who was too wicked for heaven and banned from hell for playing tricks on the devil. Jack was condemned to walk the earth forever with only a lantern (made from a hollow turnip filled with hot coals) to light the way.
