Graduates
Needed Now
Something has happened to the supply and demand theory at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture. The demand for agriculture graduates is at an all-time
high and the College is not producing enough graduates to meet that need.
The problem is nationwide. Of the i 60,000 jobs avail! able in American ! agriculture each | year, nearly 8,000
are filled by less than qualified people because of the scarcity of agriculture graduates.
Our guest columnist this week is Dorothy Golden, recruitment coordinator, UGA College of Agriculture, 102 Conner Hall, Athens
30602^_______________________
In some areas of agriculture, the shortage of qualified people is critical. In ag education, for example, there are two jobs waiting for each graduate; in dairy science and horticulture, three jobs; in food science, five jobs.
This need is expected to escalate. In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that America's global leadership in agriculture could be severely undermined if nothing is done now to ensure ag expertise for the future. Remember what happened to the U.S. car industry? The same thing, unlikely as it seems, could happen to our agriculture.
With such an abundance of good jobs available, why are young people hesitant to link their futures with agriculture the mainstay of the U.S. economy, and its largest industry its largest employer?
Part of the answer is that prospective students see evidence in every newspaper and on every news broadcast that farmers are suffering, and assume the entire industry is teetering on disaster.
In reality, the opposite is true. Other facets of agriculture are alive and well. Young people need to know about the tremendous opportunities available in agriculture.

Helping 'Each Other

Dear Editor I recently found the following information in a magazine
and thought your readers might be interested in it. A good source for old-time seed varieties is the Seed Savers Exchange, a non-profit organization of backyard vegetable gardeners who are working together to save our horticultural heritage. For more information on this organization, write Seed Savers Exchange, 203 Rural Avenue, Box BH, Decorah, IA 52101. Be sure to include a 22-cent stamp.

Dear Editor: I have a suggestion for your publication. Please ask your
advertisers to list prices in their ads. It is difficult to make purchases unless you have an idea as to price, and it is expensive to make long distance calls to obtain this information.

Many superstitions, both good and bad, are associated with the coming of the new year. While it is a com mon belief that consuming vast quantities of black-eyed peas and hog jowl will bring prosperity during the new year, you may not be as familiar with some of the following superstitions. Although these beliefs are not "tried and true," they cer tainly make for interesting bits of folklore.
* Placing a dime under your plate on New Year's Day brings good luck.
* Many visitors on the first day of the year means that you will have many during the year.

* A person must do something worthwhile on this day or end up piddling around the rest of the year.
* Open all the windows of the house for a few minutes just before midnight on New Year's Eve to let bad luck out and good luck in for the coming year.
* Hanging a new calendar before daylight on New Year's Day can bring bad luck.
* Sweeping should be avoided on the first day of the year; you may sweep your good luck out the door.
* It is bad luck to take anything out of the house on January 1.

sured ant and roach spray that is
specifically marked for indoor use. Do not treat firewood with insec ticides because toxic fumes can be emitted when the wood is burned.
To reduce insect problems, stack all firewood at least 50 feet from the house. During the coldest months, wood may be moved into an unheated shed or garage. If there are insects in the wood, they should re main dormant.
Wood can be stored in the house if only a one or two day supply is brought in. When warm weather returns, remember to return any left over wood to the woodpile.
