The Future Farmers of America organization has as its aim "the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship." It is in the scope of this program that
I have found personal fulfillment and excitement. Therefore, it is with a great deal of enthusiasm that I commend it to my peers throughout our great state.
Our theme for this year is: FFA -Keeping America on the Grow. In keeping with our theme the 15,000 FFA members in Georgia are committed to sustaining the progress of the past while continuing to strive for excellence in all areas of agriculture.
(Our guest columnist this week is Tony Edmond, President of the Georgia Association of Future Farmers of America, Georgia Department of Education, Office of Vocational Education, Twin Towers East, Atlanta 30334.)
Those of us on the farm are caught up in change just like all facets of our society. For one thing, we are faced with the challenge of feeding an increasing population from a decreasing number of acres of farmland. But, based on our past experience and our faith in the future, we feel that we are equal to the challenge.
It is not by accident that America represents the horn of plenty in agricultural products. For over 50 years young people enrolled in vocational agriculture classes throughout the nation have received instruction which has helped them to be pacesetters in management and production.
American agriculture is the undisputed leader in the world. American farmers consistently produce surpluses in a world where hunger and famine are widespread. The fact that we now have 500,000 FFA members nationwide enables us to face the future with optimism.

By Ag Department Inspectors
Last week Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said that the Georgia Department of Agriculture will begin testing food products for evidence of ethylene dibromide, or EDB, a chemical used extensively as a soil fumigant
and as an insecticide in milling and grain storage industries.
.Irvi. n, s act..ion frollows fr.ind,.ings i. n Florida of EDB traces in grain products such as corn meal, flour, grits and cake mixes. Additionally, agriculture food inspectors will be pulling samples from stores carrying products identified in Florida by brand name as contaminated, and those products will be tested for EDB residue. Random samples of all food products in Georgia are routinely tested in state Department of Agriculture laboratories for a variety of factors.
Neither the United States En-
vironmental Protection Agency or the federal Food and Drug Administration have established tolerance levels for EDB in water or foods. Indications are, however, that federal interim guideline tolerance levels may soon be established, and Irvin said his department will provide information collected in the Georgia sampling and testing pro-
cess to those agencies. "We have always complied with
federally established guidelines on chemical tolerances in agricultural products," Irvin explained. "Until this point, we have not been aware of any reason for concern, and we still have insufficient scientific data to
document at what level EDB may
cause harm to humans. "We certainly will do everything
JV,UJ
necessary to protect the public, and we believe that by testing products for EDB residue we can help
establish that scientific base of evidence we need to act
accordingly."
Play It Safe on the Farm
Horse Editi
Ask the farmer who has been caught in a farm machine or the boy who
spent an hour pinned under a tractor which upset in a creek with water up to
his neck. You could ask the farmer's wife who was helping out during a busy
time and was crushed under a tractor when she tried to drive forward out of
a ditch and found the tractor rotated around the axle instead of the axle
rotating as usual. These and thousands of others know farm accidents hurt
and hurt badly.
Not only do accidents hurt, they
can be very expensive. According to

Accidents can be avoided
if proper precautions are
taken. Practice safety at all
times. Keep shields in place
and when on the road make
sure the slow moving vehicle
emblem is in place and clean
enough to be visible. Don't
allow extra riders on farm

small children stay away

(Continued from Page 1)
Though good farm management and production is important, I would have us remember that personal growth and development are of primary importance. This is noted in our aim.
