Extension Adapts
To Changing Needs
The Georgia Extension Service, long known for its educational assistance to farmers, is changing.
For years, the Extension Service has provided farmers and their
families with upto-date, technical information to improve their ways of making a living. From the very basics of how deep to transplant a tomato, to the complexities of small business cash-flow, county Extenstion agents have been right there with the answers.
(Our guest columnist this week is Marie B. Abercrombie, President, Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists, 102 City Hall Avenue, Carrollton 30117.)
But changes are brewing within this traditional Extension Service. And the reason is simple: Georgia's people and their needs are changing.
Today's farmer is better educated and more diverse in his interests, as well as abilities. Many are working more than one job, in addition to the farm or garden; traditional malefemale roles are meshing together so that today's Extension agent often is seen teaching the farmer's wife how to keep technical farm records while the man may be busying up-dating his home remodelling skills.
The Georgia Extension Service still operates under the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 that states "the Extension Service will provide information on agriculture and home economics to the people". But today's people need more than just how to raise cattle or handle crop diseases.
To meet these changing needs, the Georgia Extension Service goes right to the "grass roots", or the people, for their ideas about program planning.
The results have been a move from strictly rural or agricultural subject

Tobacco Barn
Insulation Saves
Energy Dollars
Tobacco is a money intensive crop. However, many Georgia tobacco producers could reduce production costs by simply insulating their bulk tobacco barns.
More than 9000 bulk tobacco barns throughout the United States are used to cure the leaf, as part of this total industry. The barns normally use oil or LP gas resulting in an approximate cost of $15 million per year.
Estimates indicate that more than 10 percent of this energy is being wasted. Uninsulated walls, floors, and roofs in curing houses are the major culprit. Georgia tobacco growers could save $1.4 million per

Farm Front
A recent survey by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service reports the state's wheat and rye plantings are down from last year by 10 and 11 percent respectively.
Georgia's wheat acreage for the 1983 crop will total 1.43 million acres, 260,000 acres less than was planted last year. The figures are based on estimates reached after 87 percenj of the crop was planted.
The 1982 wheat crop was a record breaker with an average yield of 33 bushels per acre, bringing the state's total wheat production to a record 48.84 million bushels based on wheat harvested for grain.
Rye plantings this fall and winter will total 400,000 acres when completed, an 11 percent decline from the 450,000 acres planted last year. The 1982 rye crop totaled 1.47 million bushels. A yield of 21 bushels per acre was obtained from the 70,000 acres harvested for grain.
Hog and pig inventories on Georgia farms were down eight percent from a year ago, but between December and February 1983, Georgia farmers intend to have 78,000 sows farrow, a 13 percent increase above this period last year. Between March and May of 1983, nine percent more sows are expected to farrow than during that same period in 1982.

Easy Maintenance Makes

Muscadines Popular Fruit

Muscadines are increasing in popularity as both a commercial and backyard fruit. The native southern plant particularly appeals to many backyard gardeners because it successfully produces fruit without an intensive spray program.
While muscadines can be grown throughout Georgia, they are best adapted to the coastal plain and piedmont areas of the state. Severe winters plaguing northern portions of Georgia may hinder production.

Muscadines can be established while the plants are dormant any time from November 15 to March 15; December through February is recommended, however.
Although many muscadine varieties can be grown in Georgia,
Growing Fruit
The Cobb County Extension Service is sponsoring a Backyard Fruit Production class on January 13, 7 p.m., in room 310 of the Cobb County Administration Building.
Selection, care, maintenance, pruning and grafting of small fruit and tree fruit will be discussed. An optional lab class will be offered on January 15 at 9 a.m. A fee of $2 will be charged at the door. Preregistration is not required. For more information, call the Cobb

the Extensive Service recommends certain varieties for backyard gardeners. Choose a perfect flowered (self-pollinating) variety if you plan to plant a single vine. These
include the Magoon (black), Southland (black), Cowart (black), and Triumph (bronze).
Pistillate varieties do not produce pollen and include the following: Fry (bronze), Higgins (bronze), Summit (bronze) and Dulcet (black). Be sure and interplant these varieties with perfect flowered varieties previously listed.
Muscadines should live for many years under proper care so a sturdy, wooden trellis is necessary.
End posts should be from five to seven inches in diameter, eight feet long and set three feet into the ground. Line posts should be at least four inches in diameter, seven feet

All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are pro tected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. Extension Adapts To Changing Needs

matter to urban problems, as well. In addition to providing the latest technical information to farmers, Extension also provides information to the farmer who leaves his farm each day to work in town. Public housing residents and disadvantaged people also look to Extension for help in how to solve their family financial problems, or needs for better housing or adequate food.
Extension agents today provided a wealth of information to both males and females on how to prepare for home-ownership, how to care for that home, how to repair it, or how to use a computer to run the home, as well as the farm.
All of this expansion is done through increased use of mass media and group meetings, but in most counties, Extension is still there in personal contacts with people, too. The telephone is still the quickest and most accessible way to obtain answers to problems, and the answers are still backed on research coming straight from the University of Georgia.
So when you see the old familiar Georgia Cooperative Extension Service sign hanging in front of your county office, rest assured that Extension is still responding to needs of people in individualized, but updated, ways.
Yes, the Georgia Extension Service

has changed over these 68 years. We've had to. Georgia's changing people wouldn't let us do otherwise.

year at today's fuel prices if wastes were stopped.
University of Georgia engineers are offering free energy audits for flue-cured tobacco barns. Data gathered from each barn (material costs, labor, fuel costs, etc.) are submitted to computer analysis which calculates the estimated payback period. The audit program was made possible through funds from the Georgia Agriculture Commodity Commission for Tobacco.
Barn maintenance is essential for energy conservation. Caulking compound for structural cracks and new gaskets for doors cost a trifle compared to the energy that could be saved, according to engineers.
Insulating a conventional bulk tobacco barn could reduce heat loss by 25 percent. For example, with fuel prices at $1.00 per gallon, the time required to pay for insulating a 126-rack barn is approximately three years.

long and set two feet into the ground. Stretch No. 9 smooth, galvanized wire from end post to end post to support the vines. A minimum of 20 feet of trellis is required per plant. If you plant more than one row, allow 12 feet in between.
Plant your vines as soon as possible after receiving them in the mail or purchasing. If planting is delayed by unfavorable weather conditions, "heel in" plants until a suitable time. Roots should not be allowed to dry out. Cover them with damp burlap to conserve moisture. Do not let them stand in water.
Plant your vines half way between posts directly under the trellis. Dig a hole no deeper than eight inches, ten inches wide and long enough to accomodate roots after they are straightened out. Cover roots with three to four inches of clean topsoil, pack and water, and add topsoil to ground level. A mulch, such as pine needles, will help conserve moisture and discourage weed growth.
Proper care during the first two years is essential for successful future fruit production. Water plants as needed, follow fertilization guidelines and keep the area around young plants weed free.
Vines also should be properly trained at this time. A properly train-

ed vine has a trunk, two arms and fruiting spurs. Each plant should produce three to four shoots the spring after it is planted. When shoots reach one foot long, choose the strongest and remove the others. Use a string to guide the shoot to the trellis wire. When it reaches the top of the wire, pinch out the tips and let the two buds develop into the two arms. Allow shoots to grow from arms and produce fruit.
Frequent light fertilizer applications are more desirable for young plants than one heavy application. Apply fertilizer three times during the first and second year. Use one half pound of 10-10-10 or the equivalent after the plants have been settled by rain and one eighth of a pound of ammonium nitrate in late May and early July. Broadcast applications over a two foot circle.
PUBLIC HEARING
Notice is hereby given that there will be a public hearing (as required by the Georgia Agricultural Commodities Promotion Act"), section 12 (b) (1) on a proposed amendment to the Marketing Order for Peaches at 1:30 pm., January 18, 1983, Auditorium, USDA Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut Laboratory, Byron, Georgia.
