Research Helps
North Georgia
Recently the Georgia Mountain Branch Experiment Station celebrated 50 years of service to Georgia agriculture with the major thrust directed toward the needs of
citizens of the mountain and sur rounding coun ties.
Geographically and climatically the mountain sta tion is different from any other ex periment station
in Georgia. The cold climate affords the plant breeders an opportunity to evaluate breeding lines for winter

hardiness. In contrast normally ideal summer growing seasons permit the researcher to evaluate different crops for maximum yield potential.
Early research showed that with careful variety selection in combina tion with correct fertilizer and cultural practices, high quality vegetables and fruits could be pro duced. Quality bell pepper growing in the station played a major role in getting a pepper processing plant, the first industry in Union county, to locate in Blairsville.
The discovery of black rot infec tion during bloom and the subse quent development of an integrated spray program did much to save the apple industry in Georgia. Minimum use of pesticide for apples proved ef fective and profitable and also reduc ed the threat of contamination of the environment.
The station introduced fescue, im proved white clover, and other forages to the mountains and was a forerunner in managing an acre of grass and clover to support a cow and calf profitably.
A joint effort by station, Exten sion, and TVA personnel led to a farmer in Union County being the first in Georgia to produce 100

I purchased this corn meal from an old mill house. Notice how coarse it is. It's not fit for making bread. Can you have someone check out this establishment before a tourist buys some?
J.B. Atlanta
Laboratory analysis revealed that the corn meal contained a large amount of husk material and unground large pieces of kernels that one would not expect from ground meal. Our sanitarian will vist the mill to check for other con taminated meal.

Georgia's Climate Well Suited
For Productive Turkey Industry
Georgia leads the nation in combined income from the sale of broilers and eggs, but may have a greater natural potential in turkey production.
Research has shown that Georgia turkeys raised on open ranges, such as these near Molena, are more economical to produce. In addition, turkeys grown on open ranges in the state are heavier and better quality than those produced in total confinement grow-out houses.
Turkeys in most areas north of Georgia are grown almost entirely in totally confined houses. Most of these houses have insulated roofs and walls and require power ventila tion. Construction and equipment investments for turkey brooder and grow-out houses in northern produc tion areas were reported to cost as much as $4.00 per square foot. Suitable houses in North georgia were constructed and equipped recently for $3.00 per square foot for brooder houses and $2.00 per square foot for finishing houses.
Total confinement grow-out houses would not be needed in
Georgia except for the necessity of growing winter turkeys so that the processing plants can operate yeararound. Construction and equip ment investment for a 15-acre open range sufficient to grow-out 10,000 turkeys per batch was reported to cost about $6,000. Turkeys can be finished on open ranges in Georgia from mid-May through December.
Most of the heavy toms grown in Georgia are sold to processors who specialize in processed products such as turkey roasts, turkey rolls and turkey hams. Other processed

Research Helps North Georgia
(Continued from Page 1}
bushels of corn per acre. Research has shown no-till corn production to be as ef fective as conventional tillage with advantages in soil conservation, earlier planting, and energy sav
ings. Cooperative efforts with
Extension have been most .productive: a cattle
wintering-stockering pro gram using fescue-clover as
the base feed with various supplements resulting in
area cattlemen carrying several thousand calves to heavier weights at an estimated profit of $50 per head; and an apple tree train ing, rootstock, variety creating widespread interest among growers in North and Middle Georgia.
The mountain station was chosen by the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Associa tion as one of 20 original sites in North America to evaluate a new line of apple rootstocks. This group will visit the station in 1983.
A modern swine facility, a joint effort by TVA, Exten sion and Experiment Station for the production of feeder pigs was completed in 1982. Donations of equipment and gilts were made by the agri business community. The uses of this facility include education, training, and economic studies.
Presently there are 32 scientists cooperating on 28 research projects and 10 demonstrations across several disciplines.
Georgia's Climate Well Suited For Turkey Industry
(Continued from Page 1)
products include wieners, bologna, salami and pot pies.
Processors need heavy tom turkeys that produce the largest amount of breast meat for processed products. The larger turkeys have a more favorable meat-to-bone ratio and are more economical to debone.
The heaviest and the best quality Georgia turkeys are grown on open pasture ranges according to results reported by growers during a recent farm survey. Average market weights of heavy tom
turkeys grown on open
range averaged 28.5 pounds,
with a feed conversion rate of 3.19 pounds per pound of marketable meat.
Turkey weights from total confinement houses averag ed only 26.8 pounds, with a less efficient feed conver sion rate of 3.28 pounds. Some Georgia range turkeys weigh as much as 35 pounds.
Turkey production is hard ly an open market enterprise anymore, with most turkeys contracted to processors before the eggs are set in the hatcheries. It is extremely risky for a new grower to
grow turkeys without a marketing contract and without proper supervision by experienced service per sonnel to prevent disastrous flock losses from diseases and other production pro blems.
