On the Farm Front Irrigation Anti-Syphon Device

First American
Beef Breed
The American Brahman breed developed in the southeastern part of the United States as a result of the importation of "humped cattle" from India. Prior to this time virtual ly all cattle in this country were of European origin.
The American Brahman Breeders Association was organized in 1924 by J. W. Startwell of Houston, Texas, who was the first Secretary of the Association and proposed the word "Brahman" as the name of these cat tle. It was adopted, and the herd book was established with a stan dard of excellence set forth, and records were instituted. Brahman became the first American beef breed.
Presently, Brahmans have spread to every state in the United States, as well as to various other countries throughout the world.
(Our guest columnist this week is Buck Swindle, President of the Georgia Brahman Association, 111 Fairway Drive, Carrollton 30117.)
Brahman Cattle have a distinctive appearance which sets them aside from other breeds. The hump, the long legs, large ears, large dulap, and abundance of loose fold of skin on the neck and body as a whole con tribute to their unusual appearance.
The usual size of a mature bull is 1,600 to 2,200 pounds, and cows from 1,000 to 1,400 pounds. Calves are small at birth, weighing from 45 to 50 pounds, but they grow very rapidly.
The gray cattle vary in color from light gray to almost black. They are classified in the registry as either gray or red Brahmans. Gray bulls are usually darker than cows.
There is a gross misconception about the disposition of Brahman cattle. They are very intelligent, in quisitive, shy and, yet, high-spirited. This accounts for their unusual, thriftiness, hardiness and adaptibility to a wide range of diet and living conditions.

Now Required Across State

crop insurance coverage without paying
nremhun costs to

A new state law designed to prevent ground and surface water contamina tion from irrigation feedback becomes effective this month.

USDA'a Federal Crop In surance Corporation,
The higher coverage will be available to farmers who plant corn, cotton, grain sorghum, rice, soybeans, wheat and barley in Spring 1983.
Local ASCS offices will provide the appropriate forms and assist farmers in establishing yield data.
Crop Conditions Soybean and pecan harvests are gaining momen tum across the state with mostly good and fair condi tions reported. Excellent yields of cotton are reported in many areas, but harvest continues to lag behind last year. The average yield should be 507 pounds per acre, boosting last year's cot ton production of 159,000 bales to 185,000 bales. Wheat planting is under way in the northern third of the state, but low soil moisture is causing delays in other areas.

The law requires a check valve, low pressure drain and vacuum relief valve on all irrigation systems through which chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides are applied to crops.
Becoming effective now, in November, it gives farmers throughout the state ample time to get their irrigation systems modified prior to the beginning of spring plan ting.
Regulations drawn to enforce the new law read as follows:
Handicraft Edition
A special handicraft edi tion of the MARKET BULLETIN will be publish ed on November 24. Deadline for notices is November 12.
Regulations for han dicrafts will be relaxed to in clude ornamental and gift items not regularly publish ed. All notices should in clude an affidavit stating that the item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.

ANTI-SYPHON DEVICE. Any ir rigation system designed or used for the application of fertilizers, pesticides, or chemicals, shall be equipped with an anti-syphon device consisting of the following com ponents:
(a) Functional Check Valve. Such valve shall be equipped with replaceable disc and shall be ser viceable with conventional tools. This valve shall be located in the ir rigation supply line between the ir rigation pump and the point of injec tion of fertilizer, pesticide or chemical. This valve, when installed,

Do
Utilize plastic lids from cof fee and shortening cans by us ing them as a permanent quilt patterns. Simply draw the pat tern on paper, trace it on the lid, then cut it out with a razor knife. It is easier than making several cardboard patterns that tend to become worn and need to be replaced.
Pour boiling water over nut meats to remove them easily from the shell in whole sec tions.
Eliminate the odor of fresh paint or tobacco in a room, by placing a small dish of white vinegar in the room.
If the eye of your needle seems to be shrinking or becoming hard to see, try spraying the thread with hair spray. This should stiffen it and make threading an easier task.

Beef Breed
(Continued from Page 1)
The frequent term "Brahma" does not reflect the true disposition of the breed. Any animal mistreated or abused will become wild. When a Brahman animal is treated properly, it will perform in a very docile man ner.
Brahman cattle are well-adapted
to warm climates and can tolerate low temperatures. They can forge on rough terrain and a variety of range
conditions. Brahman cows are ex cellent mothers, and butterfat con tent of Brahman milk is shown to be over five percent. This results in big, thrifty, heavy calves at weaning time. The crossing of Brahman blood with European cattle creates a hybrid vigor that is incomparable.
These hybrids will equal breeds on high concentrate rations and will surpass them on low concentrate ra tions, making them more efficient convertors of roughage.
Brahman cattle have a long life span. Their productive life is substantially longer than European breeds. It is not uncommon to have a Brahman cow 18 years of age still having calves on a regular annual basis.
For over 50 years the Brahman Breeders have been working to in crease the efficiency of the produc tion of beef and assist the commer cial producer.
Truly, these are majestic cattle, and their infusion into the other breeds have made a tremendous im pact. For more information regar ding Brahman cattle and a list of breeders in Georgia, contact Joe Overby, Secretary-Treasurer, Georgia Brahman Association, Suite 412, 3030 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30305, (404)261-7184.
