Bad Years Make
Farmers Anxious
Much has been written about the current plight of agriculture as an in dustry, and more particularly the Georgia farmer, in this period of re
cessed farm prices and high production costs.
The Georgia producer had several strikes against him at the beginning of this economic turn down, mainly due to weather condi
tions that resulted in lower than nor mal crop yields for four of the past five years.

Pecan Problems
Prompt Release
Of Insecticide
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, has issued a crisis exemption for the use of up to 65,000 pounds of Vendex (50 percent wettable powder) insec ticide.
Irvin said use of the insecticide in Georgia is necessary to control the pecan leaf scorch mite on Georgia pecan trees.
Irvin said the mite has reached damaging levels in some areas of the state and Georgia research and Ex tension specialists advise that an estimated 40,000 acres of trees are in imminent danger of premature defoliation.
Irvin said the use of Vendex would be limited to use at the rate of not more than 1 to 2 1/2 pounds per acre and not more often than twice this season with no applications within 14 days of harvest.
The exemption will expire October 31 and use of the material after that date will be illegal, Irvin said.

finding agency that provides much of the basic data used to measure the pulse of domestic agriculture. These data are analyzed, scrutinized, inter preted, utilized, praised and criticiz ed by the entire agricultural com munity including producers, buyers, processors, economists, government policy makers and the farm press.
This is the way it should be. Only by working together with the best in formation available can solutions to the many existing problems be found to ensure the renewal of a sound and viable food and fiber industry. Agriculture is the basic industry

Farm Safety Week
Farming is now considered the most dangerous occupation in the United States, even though its safety record is improving, according to the National Safety Council.
Farm Safety Week has been designated September 12-18. Farmers and agricultural workers should take time during this week to review safety rules so that they can avoid accidents.

Practice Safety When Handling Chain Saws

A chain saw is a valuable tool to have around the farm or home for cutting firewood, clearing away trees or for other chores. However, operators sometimes forget the potential danger of a chain saw; the same cutting power that carves heavy timber can also easily cut into flesh if handled improperly.
In 1981, chain saws were associated with more than 123,000 injuries requiring medical attention and 50 deaths, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commis sion. Most of these accidents were a result of an encounter with the fastmoving saw blade. The Commission
points out that 23 percent of these in juries resulted from the phenomenon kown as "kickback," the upward, rearward movement of the saw when it unexpectedly jumps toward the operator.
In addition, chain saw accidents
can occur when cut material hits the operator, when the saw is uninten tionally turned on and the chain cuts the operator and when the operator receives shock or is electrocuted by an electrically powered saw.

Although chain saws are potential ly harmful, danger can be avoided by following preventive safety measures. Safety begins before you purchase a chain saw. When shopp ing for a saw, select a model with chains that immediately stop after the power is turned off.
Buy a saw no larger or longer than required for the largest size timber you will cut. For example,
On the average, more than 50,000 persons are treated annually in hospitals for injuries associated with chain saws, according to the U.S. Con sumer Product Safety Commission.
lightweight saws require less exer tion and less strain. Make sure the saw you purchase has a guard over the rear portion of the chain. If buy ing an electric saw, check to see if it is insulated against shock by double insulation or three prong grounded plugs. On gasoline models, the ex haust should be directed away from the operator.
Before using a chain saw, read the instruction manual carefully and reread it periodically. Make sure you

are dressed appropriately when us ing the tool. Wear sturdy shoes, safe ty glasses and heavy pants. Ear plugs may be necessary when using some gasoline models to prevent hearing damage. Do not wear loose jewelry or clothing that may catch in the saw's moving parts.
If you have a gas powered model, fill the tank before starting your task. To prevent a fire hazard, start the saw up at least 10 feet from where it was fueled. Be sure and wipe off any gasoline spilled on the tank or engine before starting. Always have the con trols in the proper position to avoid sudden start-up of the blade.
While operating a chain saw, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Com mission recommends the following safety rules:
Shut off engine and wait for chain blade to stop before changing posi tion or carrying the saw.
Keep a firm hold with both hands on saw' handles: maintain good
balance. Avoid cutting above shoulder
height. (Continued on Page 8)

Chain Saws
(Continued from Page 1)
Keep cord clear of blade on electric models.
Be careful that the moving chain does not touch the ground; it will dull the chain and kickback could occur.
Never allow children to use.
Avoid using saw on wet ground; you could slip and come in contact with the blade.
Never let a saw run unat tended.
Keep legs apart or to one side of the machine so that, in case of kickback, the saw will not strike your legs.
Keep hands and feet clear of chain blade at all times.
When repairing or main taining your chain saw, shut off the engine and disconnect the spark plug. Keep the chain, bar and sprocket clean ed and lubricated. Be sure and replace worn sockets and chains.
Keep the chain sharp; you can spot a dull chain when easy-to-cut wood becomes hard to cut and burn marks appear on the wood. In addi tion, check frequently for leaky fuel lines, blade tension, loose nuts and bolts and fray ing cords on electric saws.
Always store chain saws in a high or locked place away from children.
