Winter Weather
Affects Paper
Due to inclement weather, your ad may not be in this week's paper. Most ads received through Tuesday morning's mail were typeset, but bad weather and irregular postal deliveries prevented us from publishing all ads scheduled for this week's paper.
If your ad is not in today's paper, it will be published in next week's BULLETIN.
Keep watering and feeding of your houseplants down to a minimum during winter months. Overwatering invites fungi; water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Since plants grow more slowly during cold weather (even indoors), they require fewer nutrients.
To sterilize soil to use for repotting houseplants and starting seedlings, bake it for half an hour at 180 degrees F. This step should rid the soil of nematodes and other undesirable soil organisms. Keep in mind that temperatures above 180 degrees F. may destroy valuable organic material and soil structure.
Just because growing' conditions aren't desirable for gardening outdoors does not mean you have to be idle indoors. You can start seeds of broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower and cabbage in your window sills, greenhouses or under grow lights.
Seeds do not need rich soil to germinate. Provide a loose, well drained mixture. Sow seed thinly and do not cover fine seed; simply press in lightly. If you sow seed too thick, you may have thin spindly plants. Sow about seven to ten small seeds or four to seven large seeds per inch of row. Never let seed dry out any time during the germination period.
Growing your own seedlings is economical and gives you a wider choice of plant varieties. These plants can be transplanted to the garden in early spring.

Georgia farmers have planted a record wheat crop this year, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
"We have 1,530,000 acres planted this year compared to last year's record breaking crop of 1,150,000 acres," said the Commissioner.
If early production estimates become a reality, Georgia farmers should produce 48,960,000 bushels of wheat - nearly three million bushels more than last year's record crop, according to Irvin.
Winter wheat production has remained popular with Georgia farmers throughout the years because it fits well into a double cropping situation. Much of the spring wheat is followed by soybeans or sorghum which have ample time to mature during Georgia's long growing season. Wheat can also be planted on land that would normally lie idle in the winter.
