Trade Growth
As president of the Southern United States Trade Assocation (SUSTA), I will make a visit to Europe in mid-October to further expand foreign sales of southern food
and agricultural products.
I strongly believe that International trade, specifically exporting Georgia products, is the key to the future of agriculture and its economic growth. In fact, I am proud to have played a major role in the founding of the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) along with several other southern commissioners of agriculture. Since that time, we have been able to expand the sale of southern food and agricultural products significantly. As host commissioner for America's first National Food and Agriculture Exhibition to be held in Atlanta in 1983, this will give me an apportunity to encourage foreign attendance. My itinerary will include a visit to i European tobacco company that auys some $20 million worth of Georgia tobacco each year, and at:endance at the world's largest "In:ernational Food Trade Show" held n Cologne, West Germany. At the Cologne show and at other joints in West Germany, Italy and Greece I will encourage foreign juyer attendance at SUSTA's New Means food and agriculture show n March of next year, as well as the jig event scheduled for Atlanta, which is sponsored by the National \ssociation of State Departments of \griculture. Since the Georgia legislature jstablished an international trade iivision in the Georgia Department jf Agriculture at my request, Georgia's international farm proiuct sales have more than doubled - from $329.5 million to $753.4 Trillion last year. It has become obvious to those of is involved in the international rade aspect of Georgia agriculture hat sooner or later we are going to (Continued on Page 8)
ag consumer line .. .
I recently moved to North Georgia and am considering growing blackberries as a source of income. Is there an association, as with blueberries, that may help me along these lines? I feel it would be helpful to communicate with others who have growing experience.
N. R. Morgantown
We were not able to locate a blackberry association in Georgia. You may wish to run a notice in the MARKET BULLETIN, stating that you would like to contact individuals who are experienced in this area and perhaps start an organization.

Please identify this fruit. I have hear folks call it "mule orange." Is it edible?
J. B. Jackson Our botanist identified it as an Osage orange. It is not edible and there have been reports that it is slightly toxic. The fruit is not palatable due to its thick, white, milkly latex juice.

I found several wood ducks in a pit and would like to start raising them to sell. Do I need a permit?
J. B. Jesup
You should contact the USDA Fish and Wildlife Service, Special Agent in Charge, Law Enforcement District 9, Post Office Box 4839, Atlanta, Georgia 30302, regarding rules and regulations on raising and selling wood ducks.

Grandpa's Garden
Fall is an excellent time to get your perennial bed in shape for spring planting. Dig up the soil thoroughly, mix in plant food and compost or humus. The more organic matter you can incorporate into the soil, the better it will be.
Summer vacation is over for your houseplants and you should bring them indoors the first week in October. Although daytime temperatures are adequate, lower night temperatures could be harmful.
If houseplants have been in direct sunlight, expect the lower leaves to turn yellow and drop once indoors. Leaf drop also may occur due to the sudden humidity change. You can increase humidity by putting a pan of water on the radiator or by placing a teakettle on the stove to release moisture in the form of steam. Plants themselves help release moisture into the room which also is healthy for humans.
Bring your potted amaryllis bulbs in before frost and place them in a cool basement. Gradually withhold water until the soil in the pot is com-
pletely dry. This will cure the bulbs and give them the 60 day rest period needed before starting new growth.
To prevent your bulbs from rotting and drying during storage in
winter months, try dusting them with sulfur.
To clean your indoor foliage plants and make them shiny, try a little low-fat milk. The very small amount of fat present in the milk will provide a short term shine (be sure and use low-fat milk or skim milk; milk rich in butter fat may clog up plant pores).
Watering hanging baskets indoors always seems to be a problem . . . they leak on your rugs and furniture. To prevent this, use ice cubes! They melt at room temperature and are absorbed slowly and easily (try not to let the cubes touch the plant).
