Group Extends Ag Education
The Georgia Young Farmers,
organized in 1970, is a state-wide,
non-profit, non-political organiza-
tion formed for educational pur-
poses with particular emphasis on
agriculture educa-
tion. Georgia has
the second largest
young farmers
organization in
the
nation.
Young farmers
enrolled
in
classes con-
ducted by voca-
tional agriculture
teachers are eligible to participate
in activities relating to the associa-
tion at local, district, state and na-
tional levels. The association is
not intended to replace existing
organizations but strengthen
them.
(Our guest columnist this week is Ned
Harman, President, Young Farmers Association, Route 2, Box 409, Carrollton 30117.)
Programs provide members with the opportunity to continue their education as well as participate in leadership, community improvement, social and recreational activities.
Goals of the Young Farmers include:
- Provide continuing eduation to meet new and changing needs for progress in agriculture.
- Help young farmers build better farms, homes and families.
- Assist young farmers in becoming successfully established as farmers and leaders in the communi-
ty.
- Provide group experience and exchange of ideas through local, district and state activities.
- Add dignity and prestige to the business of farming.
- Cooperate with agriculture
organizations, business and industry for continued improvement in agricultural technology and social conditions.
- Provide wholesome social and recreational activities.

Cotton Farmers
Pay As You Go Starts Oct. 1
Starting October 1, producers must pay for cotton classing services provided by USDA. Up to now, producers could submit cotton samples for classification at no charge.
The change results from budget cuts passed by the federal government. According to the Reconciliation Act, USDA should provide the classing service to producers for a fee that will cover expenses. The proposed fee is 60 cents per sample.
Producers will be billed on a monthly basis for each sample submitted by a licensed gin or warehouse with a completed cotton classification memorandum, CN-117
(green card). Gins may collect the fees as a serivce to their customers which will also help keep cost of the classing service as low as possible.
As in the past, samples must be drawn by a licensed gin or warehouse and forwarded directly to the Marketing Service Office. The name and complete address of the producer must be entered on the green card if the producer is to be billed.
For additional information, contact the USDA Marketing Service, Cotton Division, 4890 Raley Road, Macon 31206.
'81 Crop Produces
Too Much Tobacco
Georgia tobacco farmers may be penalized for growing a bumper high quality crop this year.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has urged Secretary of Agriculture John Block to intervene with USDA officials who may seek to penalize Georgia tobacco farmers who over produced on their tobacco allotment this year.
Although farmers planted within their allotted acreage, the unusually good growing season has produced a crop which may yield from three to five million pounds more tobacco than allowed under this year's poundage quota.

Store Foods in the Natural State
For a Simple Way of Preservation
Storage of foods in the natural state is one of the easiest, least expensive methods of food preservation. To ensure success of this relatively simple preservation method, however, the home gardener must gather fruits and vegetables at proper maturity and observe correct temperature, humidity, ventilation and cleanliness practices.
Most modern homes lack the traditional dirt cellar floors, or damp, cool basements once featured in older houses, but we can make the best of what is available.
Beekeepers Schedule
Dry, well ventilated basements with relatively even temperatures of 40 to 60 degrees, may be used for storing onions, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and squash. Cooler basements may be used for storing Irish potatoes, carrots, turnips, rutabagas and beets.
Meeting in South Go.
The annual meeting of the Georgia Beekeepers Association will be held at Valdosta October 2 and 3 at the Lowndes County Civic Center (Extension Service Building).
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Friday with registration, followed by a barbecue supper, a smoker lighting contest, and the featured speaker. Saturday's agenda includes registration at 7:30 a.m., along with a business session, honey identification contest and additional speakers.
Dr. William T. Wilson, research leader, USDA Bee DiseasesPesticides Lab, will be the featured speaker for the meeting,
More information on the meeting may be obtained from Cecil Sheppard, secretary, 3204 Westmart Lane, Dofaville 30340, 404-491-3734.
Unless your basement includes a cool, dark, ventilated room, insulated from frost ofrom the heat of a furnace area, you will have to build an area suitable for storage. If possible, locate the area on the north side of your basement where there is a window. Walls and ceilings must be well insulated. A double wall of sheetrock with air space filled with sawdust shavings, newspaper, or rock wool is very effective.
Sprinkle dirt floors with water to keep the air moist. Concrete floors may be covered with a light layer of soil and sprinkled with water to maintain humidity.
If you don't have a basement area in your home, you can improvise. Some gardeners sink a galvanized garbage can or wooden barrel into the ground for storing crops. The can should be buried upright in the

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, September 16, 1981
Dear Editor:
In reference to Phillip Driver's letter concerning bluebirds in Georgia, I don't know about the Columbus area, but they are plentiful here, espcially in the country. We have several boxes and they are always occupied.
I use a box with a flip lid so I can clean out the nest easily. I keep the hole closed until the bluebirds start househunting in early spring and close it up in the late summer. I keep the hole 1-1/2 inches, no more no less.
It is not enough to put up a proper house at the right height, etc. You also have to guard against sparrows and starlings. If you have a very busy yard with these two birds, the chances of attracting bluebirds is rather slim.

Agricultural seed and plants for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Seed Division of the Department of Agriculture, 656-3633.

Grandpa 's
Garden
It's time to begin preparing a site for a strawberry patch. You can set plants in early October for production the following spring.
Select an area for planting that is well drained and receives full or nearly full sun. Avoid planting in sites recently used to grow tomatoes, peppers, potatoes or eggplant. These areas may contain disease or insect pests that may attack strawberries.
A couple of weeks before setting plants, work some rotted manure into soil. A suitable application is 50-75 pounds of strawy manure per 100 square feet.
Old-fashioned multiplying onions can be planted in the fall to produce a supply of green onions in the spring. Onions should be planted two to three inches apart in rich, sandy loam soil.
Multiplying onions seldom produce seed and are usually propagated by bulb division. The original bulb splits into segments; when segments dry they can be used to plant as sets.
True old-fashioned multipliers are hard to find at most gardening centers since they are frequently passed from gardener to gardener. If you are interested in starting your own, your best bet is to find a local gardener who's willing to sell you some sets or check the Market Bulletin ads under the agriculture seeds and plants category.
Caladium bulbs will rot if they are left in the ground over the winter. Dig your bulbs when the leaves begin to drop and turn brown. Store bulbs in dry sand, sawdust or nylon stockings for reuse next year.
If your clay pots develop thick beards of white mold, it is probably due to the accumulation of excess fertilizer salts in the soil. To clean empty pots, soak them overnight in solution of one cup of laundry bleach to two gallons of water and scrub them with a stiff brush. Neutralize the pots by soaking overnight in a solution of one cup of vinegar and two gallons of water, then wash with soap and water. Your pots will look brand new!
To keep the thick white mold from reoccuring, reduce fertilizer applications for your potted plants.

Special Hints
Cool rapidly after picking and refrigerate or wrap apples in newspaper (also crumple newspaper in between fruit) and store in cardboard boxes. Leave beans on plants until mature; store in glass containers, cans, or bags. Place heads roots up in a 2 ft. trench, 8 inches deep. Line with straw; cover with straw and 6 inches of soil. Place in a 10 gallon crock and cover with burlap to keep moist. Can also be stored in containers covered with damp sand. Store when fully mature and dry; arrange in well-ventilated, open mesh or slatted containers. Destroy damaged potatoes; temperatures above 40 degrees will induce sprouting. Store in darkness. Select uninjured fruits for storage. Cure at temperatures of 80-85 degrees for 10 days before storing. Don't let stored fruits touch. Handle with care since they bruise easily; cure 10 days at 80-85 degrees before storing. Pick mature green fruits for storage; wash and wrap in paper for storage. They will ripen without sunlight. Bury roots in layers of moist sand to maintain crispness.

Too Much Tobacco
Continued from Page 1
Commissioner Irvin has suggested that the federal government reactivate an "excess storage program" which allows farmers to have their tobacco graded and put in the government loan program. They can also sell it to tobacco companies with the understanding that in either case they will not receive payment until July, 1982.
Under such a program, tobacco farmers would have to curtail their production in 1982 to compensate for this year's carryover.
"This storage program is essential since Georgia farmers have no way to keep their tobacco on the farm. It would be a tremendous waste to see some of the highest quality tobacco Georgia has ever produced put to the torch or allowed to rot," according to Commissioner Irvin.
FREEZE QUICKLY Foods that freeze slowly may lose quality, warn Extension Service home economists. The home economists point out that overloading the freezer with unfrozen food slows the freezing rate.
