Good Prospects
For '81 Market
Georgia farmers haven't had much to look forward to after last year's drought and financial disaster. However, it appears that this year, the prospects for favorable prices in many of our commodities give reason for hope.
The severe drought ravaged feed grain producers across the U.S. last
summer and resulted in the largest year to year decline in corn production on record.
Last year's U.S. corn crop was

stocks of corn since 1964 1.6 billion bushels cushioned the effects of lower production.
With a tight supply/demand balance in feed grains, an increase in U.S. acreage and average growing conditions will be needed to keep up with demand. Strong feed grain prices should prevail and any hints of reduced acreage or poor weather on this year's crop will push prices even higher. Soybean and feed grain producers face similar story. However, the supply/demand balance is not quite as tight. The U.S. soybean crop was 20% less than 1979's record 2.26 billion bushel crop. The resulting higher prices combined with lower livestock numbers will drive soybean usage at home lower than in 1979/80.
Exports also may suffer from higher prices and weakened foreign economies causing a reduction in soybean exports. A key to exports will be the South American crops harvested this spring. Favorable 1981 weather along with approximately the same acreage planted as in 1980 would soften the short crop crunch and work to lower prices.

Government Allows Goats Gaining Popularity

More Peanut Imports
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin expressed his concern over the Washington administration's decision to allow the importation of 100 million more pounds of edible peanuts. The additional imports could, according to Irvin, contribute to a very unstable market for Georgia peanuts later this year.
Earlier the administration had approved the importation of 201.7 million pounds of peanuts to help offset the nationwide peanut shortage since Georgia's devastating drought last year.
These imports were limited to a June 30 deadline. The newly approved import deadline for the 100 million additional pounds of peanuts has been extended until July 31 which runs almost up to harvest time in Georgia.
"It's a little too early to determine just what the outcome will be but there is no doubt that the newly improved imports, plus the extended deadline will work to weaken the market Georgia farmers have been hoping for this fall and reduce demand for Georgia's most important crop," Irvin stated.

R. M. Dothan, AL Yes. The testing you mention must be done within 30 days prior to movement, though. Only swine going directly to slaughter or to slaughter market sales can hoof it on Georgia soil without these requirements.

In the past goats may have been considered "the poor man's cow," but recent developments along with the many dairy goats now in Georgia are rapidly changing that image.

Six-year-old Molly Fairish makes milking a goat look easy and fun. A prime milk goat has the potential of providing up to five quarts of milk per day.
Molly is the daughter of Fred Parrish of Conyers, president of Georgia Dairy Goat Breeders, Inc.
Dairyman Retires From
Ga. Milk Producers
The Georgia Milk Producers, Inc., announced last week the retirement of their president, Rudolph Clark of Gainesville. Clark had served in this capacity for the past 19 years.
Clark resigned from his post at the last board meeting after retiring as an active dairyman in Georgia. In addition to dark's work with the Georgia Dairy Producers, he has served for 30 years as a soil conservation supervisor; received the Distinguished Service Award by University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine and participated in many other agricultural and community programs in the state.
Succeeding Clark as president of the association is William Higginbotham, a Wilkes County dairyman. Higginbotham has served as vice president of the association since

Many people are buying dairy goats which are relatively clean, require minimum space and help cut soaring grocery bills. Since goats can produce approximately three to five quarts of milk per day and require very small acreage, they fit perfectly into the "back to the land" movement of many families. As an added bonus, goats also make good pets.
Dairy goats provide a source of refreshing and nourishing food that can be prepared in many ways: milk, cheese and other cultured products such as ice cream and candy. Goat's milk also is recognized by doctors as being very digestible and often has been prescribed for children with digestive upsets when allergic to mother's or cow's milk.
A goat can be maintained year round on a 100' by 100' plot with a lean-to shelter and minimum supplemental feed. Consider also that goats have a desire to eat weeds and actually have improved pastures when grazed with other livestock.
Each year interest has increased in dairy goats for 4-H projects for young people in urban and suburban areas. The size of the goat, ease of handling, 'small acreage requirement, and value of the product makes them an ideal animal for young people to work with.
Dairy goat breeders have recognized this renewed interest and have been breeding their animals to improve conformation along with milk production.
Georgia goat raisers have not lagged in upbreeding. Georgia has a number of grand champions in several goat breeds as well as one of the top ten milk producers in the United States. Fourteen Georgia goat herds are on milk production testing with the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Their production records are validated and reported to the American Dairy Goat Association.

When missionaries went into the mountains of Chile, South America, they found a tribe of Indians called Araucanas. These Indians raised a chicken that layed a
blue to green egg. These chickens were sacred to the tribe. Some had distinctive ear appendance called tufts. Others were tailless and some were both tuft and rumpless. These chickens were named Araucanas after the tribe.
The reason for the blue-green egg is not so complicated if you look at a white or a brown egg. White eggs have no color. Brown eggs have a mixture of red, yellow, and blue, resulting in brown. Blue eggs have no yellow or red. Green eggs have blue and yellow color. The blue and green eggs gave them the nickname of Easter Egg Chicken.
The Araucana breeder of Georgia has been developing four new strains of Araucanas. All will carry Georgia names:
Georgia Peanut-bearded crested Georgia Aristocrat-bearded Georgia Tufted-tufted eared Georgia-clean faced All will have red-black feathers and black legs. This year we are sending our Georgia Dogwood breed to England and Brazil where it will be used for homes, parks, schools, etc. They are sent in the name of the Araucana breeder of Georgia and we hope they will promote goodwill for our state as well as the Araucana breed.

Miracle Pie

1 cup Jeremiah 6:20 (sugar) 1/4 cup Genesis 18:8 (butter) 4 Deuteronomy 22:6 (eggs) 1/2 cup 2 Kings 7:18 (flour) 2 cups Hebrew 5:13 (milk) 1 cup Genesis 43:11 (coconut) 1/4 teaspoon Matthew 5:13 (salt) 1/2 teaspoon 2 Kings 23:15 (baking powder) 1 teaspoon vanBta
Put all ingredients into a blender. Blend thoroughly. Pour into a 10" pie plate that has been greased and floured. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 60 minutes. A crust will form on the bottom, pie filling is the center and a
coconut topping above. Make it a family project to look up the ingredients. All

Cats seem to think flower beds and freshly cultivated areas are their "kitty litter box" and they dig holes, uproot or smother seedlings and "burn" plants. To discourage cats from digging in your potted plants and flower beds, add orange peels to the soil.
To keep rabbits from having a picnic in your vegetable garden, spray your crops with aluminum sulfate solution: one ounce in a gallon of water to which is added one cup of hydrated lime (be sure and mix this solution in a well-ventilated area). Vegetables must be washed before eating if this solution is used.
Prune spring and flowering trees and shrubs after they bloom. Azaleas and camellias should be groomed and trimmed after they bloom and before new growth begins.
If you are ready to transplant your tomato plants from indoors to outside, be sure and water them before moving. Dig the hole you are planning to move them to before you take the plant from its former home. Put plenty of water in the new hole and set the plant in right up to its leaves.
Plants can be placed from two to six feet apart, depending on the variety and the space you have available. Once plants are in the hole, firm the dirt over the hole by gently stepping around the plant.
More information on mothballs ... while many of our readers report using them successfully to discourage squirrels from eating their tomatoes, be sure and use them with caution. They can be dangerous if eaten by children or animals.

The Georgia Milk Producers, Inc. is a 950 member association of Georgia's Grade A dairies. There are approximately 130,000 dairy cows in the state which last year produced 1.3 billion pounds of milk and contributed $160,000,000 to agricultural revenues.

Good Prospects

Cotton already was experiencing a revival in prices before the summer's heat and drought reduced last year's cotton crop by 3.4 million bales. Cotton prices exceeded manmade fiber prices by considerable margins last year and could encourage some shift. However, supply and demand may remain delicately balanced this year as long as acreage is not significantly increased or weather conditions are anything less than ideal.
Wheat producers were the only farmers faced with a record crop in 1980. However, production declines in other areas of the world probably will result in record exports. The worldwide demand has worked prices up and resulted in a 150 percent increase in acres planted in Georgia. Barring poor growing conditions, wheat supplies should increase.
Livestock producers should benefit from reduced meat supplies. U.S. cattlemen were poised for a substantial increase in cattle numbers after massive herd liquidation between 1975 and 1980. Drought, high production cost and disappointing prices have combined to slow expansion plans. The odds favor several years of favorable prices for Georgia cow/calf producers.
Hog producers have reduced their numbers in response to the lowest prices since 1974 during early '80. If current reported plans materialize, hog production this year should be 6% below 1980's production. Such a drop in production may allow prices to rise $5-$10/cwt. over current levels.
While many outlook factors can and will change it does appear Georgia producers will have profitable pricing opportunities on many of their crop and livestock enterprises despite higher production cost. Certainly, the market outlook is much improved from this time a year ago. Now, if we can only get Mother Nature to cooperate, perhaps '81 will help ease the pain of '80.
Cotton Pickin' Fair
Although cotton is no longer king in Gay, Georgia, the name is there and doing well as the town gears up for the 10th, semi-annual Cotton Pickin, Antique, Art and Crafts Fair. The event will be held May 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Gay.
The fair will feature craftspeople at work, primitive to period antiques, a childrens' corner, country music, and good country cooking.
