Lower interest Prevention Program Necessary
Some Farm Work
Impairs Breathing
There is a "serious" respiratory disease that strikes one particular segment of the agricultural community.
Farmer's Lung, an occupational disease which can rob life-sus-
taining breath if not diagnosed and \ treated, strikes ( among those who ; work with moldy hay.
The ailment is sustained from F breathing the mil; lions of tiny mold spores shaken out of a bale of moldy hay. Anyone who is allergic to the spores and must work in such a conditioned atmosphere is highly susceptible to Farmer's Lung. The symptoms are serious, and once the allergic reaction begins, the person involved will

always be susceptible when exposed to hay mold.
Conditions for the disease are high when working with moldy hay in close spaces without good ventilation such as a barn during the winter months. It is not the hay itself
and fresh hay won't cause the disease but rather the mold which grows in the baled hay, that causes Farmer's Lung.
The primary cure is to have the patient stay totally away from hay mold spores. If this is not possible, comfortable face masks are available. Medication may help, but cannot prevent completely reoccurrence of the symptoms if exposure continues.
A person with Farmer's Lung who does not avoid hay mold may get sicker and sicker until he is no longer able to perform hard work. And, after many years of exposure, he may be unable to be active at all...the disease can be fatal.
After working with moldy hay for several months or years, depending on the individual, the worker may begin to notice a number of specific, easily recognizable symptoms. The

On Farm Loans
Interest rates on housing and farm loans made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farmers Home Administration and crop loans made by the Commodity Credit Corporation have been reduced.
The interest rate on all 1980 crop commodity loans made by CCC is lowered from 13 to 11 1/2 percent. However, the interest rate on CCC farm storage facility and drying equipment loans will remain at the 13 percent rate.
Interest rates for Farmers Home Administration economic emergency loans to farmers were lowered to 11 percent for real estate and to 11.5 percent for production loans. Both had been 14 percent.
The new rates for emergency disaster loans will be 12.5 percent on real estate and 13.5 percent for production loans. Both had been 14 percent.
Regular Farmers Home Administration farm real estate loans will carry a new interest rate of 11 percent while regular farm operating bans will be at 10.5 percent.
Interest rates for actual loss disaster emergency loans will remain at 5 percent as prescribed by law.
Back Yard Farming
To Maintain Good Animal Health
Temperatures across Georgia are beginning to move into the 90 degree margins, signalling a period of extremes when animal health should be a prime consideration for Georgia farmers.
Sunbelt 1980 Ag Exposition
Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin explains that good animal health can be "virtually assured" if a basic, four step prevention program is closely followed.
The Commissioner and other state veterinary officials recommend an outline which calls for proper breeding to produce animals that are basically resistant to stress; a program of good, proper nutrition, health procedures to guard against internal and external parasites and a vaccination schedule to ward off various bacterial and blood diseases, including para-influenza.
The hot weather summer months produce more respiratory problems,
Earticularly in hogs, which should e closely monitored when the temperatures begin to rise.
October 14,15,16, Moultrie
Animal health experts are quick to point out that most animals are highly susceptible not only to heat, but to any extremes, and without a continuous good herd health program, death and weight losses can be costly. With a good, effective health program, such losses can be
cut as much as 90 percent.
Consider Adding a New Kid
To Your
ural Family
A dairy goat or two can supply a family with good, wholesome milk for much
less money than it would take to keep a cow. Goats cost less to start with and
need less space, pasture, and feed. Too, a cow would produce more milk than
most families would consume.
The chief characteristics of goat's milk that differ from cow's milk is the small size of the fat globules and the soft curd. These characteristics

butter is a possibility, though not entirely satisfactory since the cream does not rise. Consequently a cream of low fat content is obtained which does not favor high yield of butter.
Two does may be better than one because they will supply milk for the entire year, and they will be company for each other.

These and other recommendations, such as a constant supply of clear water and adequate shade pertain fo the health of all animals, including domestic pets.
The over-all recommendation from Commissioner Irvin is that farmers and other animal owners across Georgia should work closely with their practicing area veterinarian to insure a continuous year-round, good health program.

[Editor's note: Several questions on crop surveys have arisen since a guest column by Frasier Galloway, Statistician-1n-Charge of the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, was published in the MARKET BULLETIN last month. Below is a letter from Mr. Galloway to clarify any confusing points.]
Dear Editor: This is to further explain one type of probability
sampling referred to in the May 28th article entitled
"Crop Surveys Show Agriculture Trends." The brief
reference to this procedure in the previous article may
have caused some misunderstanding. MULTIPLE FRAME PROBABILITY SAMPLING
combines two or more types of frames into one samp-
ling scheme. In Georgia we estimate hogs, cattle and white corn by using two frames, namely: LIST frame
and AREA frame. The list frame sample expands to represent these operators on the list. Those producers found in the land area frame that were not on the list frame gives a measure of incompleteness in the list due to omissions or changes of ownership since
the list was completed. Those operators sampled from the list are referred
to as overlap with the area sample and represent approximately 75 percent of the indicated level of estimate. Those operators not on the list [it is not usually possible to have a complete list] are referred to as nonoverlaps and represent approximately 25 percent
of the indicated level of estimate. Estimates can, therefore, be made on both magnitude and proportion.

Dear Editor: Since I became interested in herbs, I have found
that there is a great deal of difficulty in learning about herbs from books. It is a fascinating hobby that must
be seen, smelled and tasted to be fully enjoyed. It would be of great help to have several others with
whom to swap notes, ideas, sources, plants, seeds and cuttings. I am interested in corresponding with others interested in herb growing and cooking.

kale which I understand is delicious. If any of your readers can help me, I would appreciate hearing from

Dear Editor:
I have noticed by the date on my mailing label that
my yearly subscription for the MARKET BULLETIN is
just about to run out. I want to renew and send anoth-
er subscription to my father-in-law.
Your paper is one of the finest and informative agri-
cultural papers I have ever read. It gives an overview of
the consumer market and also some of the most
mouth watering recipes and real down to earth ideas
on how to deal with some of the forces of nature
around us. Thanks heaps!

EAT CHICKEN
RATS AND MICE
U.S. broiler production in-
creased in the last decade, according to poultry scientists at the University of Georgia. Per capita consumption was up 40 percent, climbing from 34.8 pounds in '69 to 48.9 pounds in'79.
Rats and mice transmit diseases and cause $1 billion in property losses in the U.S. each year. Extension Service specialists say you can prevent their entry into basements and attics by sealing all
openings.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breed ing horses should ask to see the re gistration papers before leaving pre mises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the sell er promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse fanners should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin sh ould have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

The plant was identified as ground ivy. The way that you control it will depend on where it is growing.
Is it required that milk be dated? I just bought some that did not have any date on it.
R. G. Decatur Milk must have a date stamped on it. This is the last day it can be sold, not the last day you can use it. The carton that you purchased has the date stamped on the container near the handle. It is raised on the clear plastic and visible on every gallon.
We bought some gas yesterday and the pump jumped from nine to eleven dollars.
F. D. Macon Thanks for calling. Our inspector visited the station and checked the pump. It was put out of operation until repairs can be made.
We are planning to move to Florida sometime in July. The mover said our house plants must be inspected.
B.T. Chamblee Glad you contacted the department in advance. Some states do require that plants brought into the state be inspected to insure that they are di sease-free. This service is provided by the Department of Agriculture free of charge. However, it is a good idea to notify us at least three weeks in ad vance.
P.M., Atlanta: We are checking out the situation you described, but we do not have a
way of contacting you to provide the investigation results.
I bought some potatoes and onions that were advertised as being in ten and three pound bags, respectively. There were no weights on the bags and when I weighed one on the store scales, it was a half pound short.
R.W. Decatur Thanks for bringing the matter to our attention. Food products that are already packaged should have the weight on the label. We have discussed the label requirements with the management and this should not be a pro blem in the future.
Recently in the grocery store I noticed a 10 cents difference in price between Grade "A" cut-up fryers and country style cut-ups. What is the difference?
A. F. Marshallville The term "country style cut-ups" means the pulley bone is cut off from the breast before it is split, giving you an additional piece. Because of the cut, it is more expensive than the Grade "A" cut-up fryers.
Readers: The Federal Trade Commission has announced that consumers do not
have to return or pay for merchandise received through the U.S. mail if they did not order it. Only two kinds of merchandise can legally be sent through the postal service without a consumer's prior agreement: clearly marked free samples and merchandise mailed by a charitable organization seeking contributions. Any unsolicited material must be clearly marked as a gift and it is illegal to bill the consumer for unordered merchandise.
Please check the store where I shop. They have price tags stuck one on top of the other.
D.O. East Point It is not illegal to place one price tag over the other. Prices are determin ed within a competitive market and stores may raise or lower prices as they see fit.
What are the differences in the types of lowfat milk? B.T.
Cornelia There are a number of definitions for various lowfat milk products depending on the vitamins or flavoring added. However, the basic dif ferences have to do with the amount of butterfat allowed. The lower the butterfat the higher the protein level in the product. The skimmilk or nonfat milk is Grade A milk which has less than one half of one percent [0.5 per cent] butterfat. Lowfat milk meets all requirements for Grade A whole milk except that its butterfat level can be no lower than one half of one percent [0.5 percent] and no higher than two percent [2 percent]. Neither product can have less than eight and one quarter percent [8.25 percent] milk solids not fat. Whole milk contains not less than three and one quarter percent [3.25 percent] butterfat.
Readers may write Consumer Services, Room 300, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 for information on areas regulated by the department. Calls may be placed via the statewide Ag Consumer Line at 1-800-282-5852. In the metro Atlanta area call 6563645.
What can a senior citizen do to cut expenses? According to Henry Mosley, Austell, you can cut your food bill in half by growing a vegetable garden. "I spent $8.00 on seed and have 16 different vegetables growing in my back yard. I don't use a tiller or anything fancy, just an old push plow, pitchfork and
simple gardening tools." Mr. Mosley says his 7fl foot by 14 row garden will produce until frost. If his
tomato plants perform like last year, each vine will average 80 pounds. His secret for early .producing and long-lasting tomatoes begins in mid-February. "I dig a hole 18 inches deep and 12 inches wide, add a cup of Epsom salts, a cup of 6-8-8 fertilizer and a gallon of cow manure. Cover this up and set the
tomato plants after the last freeze." Mr. Mosley likes to do most of the canning and preserving but his wife,
Bonnie, also enjoys the bounty of the garden. "One of Henry's favorite recipes is to cut irish potatoes, squash and onions in chunks, roll them in flour, salt and pepper and cook til done in just a little oil. He adds a cup of shredded cheese just before serving," according to Mrs. Mosley.
How much work does it take to grow three types of beans, cucumbers, cabbage, squash, lettuce, onions, okra, peas, sweet and irish potatoes, hot and Bell peppers, spinach and tomatoes? "One hour, from 7 to 8 am, every day," says Mr. Mosley.

Star Covered Quilt Top Makes Beautiful Bedspread
The Grecian star quilt in beautiful quilted and also tied. The solid-color abstract stars surrounded by multi-color circles reminds one of a kaleidoscope.
Use a light, bright color for the "stars". A dark background is most attractive when used with bright odd print scraps for the surrounding circle pieces.
For a double bed quilt top, you need approximately 25 motifs, 12 half motifs and 4 quarter motifs. To begin, piece together four A units to make the center star. Then make an outer circle by alternating eight B and eight C units. Baste the four points of the star to the circle.

SILAGE PRODUCES
Crops grown and harvested for silage usually produce more total digestible nutrients per acre for cattle, says Bill Sell, forage specialist with the University of Georgia Extension Service. In fact, silage uses better than 90 percent of the production from a given land area. Continuous grazing uses only about 50 to 60 percent of the production. When harvested as hay, 75 to 80 percent of the crop is recovered.
COTTON INDUSTRY
"King" cotton has undergone significant changes in the last 30 years. W. C. McArthur of the University of Georgia says the major changes include a sharp decline in acreage, significant increases in per acre yields, and important shifts in regional production patterns. McArtiiur says the yield increase resulted primarily from changing from low producing areas to high producing areas.
4-H GARDENING
Young Georgia 4-H members are finding that gardening can be fun and educational. It shows them the relationship between man and earth, while teaching them how plants grow.
CLEAN WICKER
Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt particles from wicker furniture. Then make a solution of warm water and detergent, and use a soft brush to scrub the wicker. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
STRAWBERRY TIP
Strawberries should be planted in full sun, say Extension Service horticulturists. It's also a good idea to avoid areas previously planted in brambles, tomatoes, potatoes or other crops susceptible to verticilKumwilt.
USE LEFTOVERS
Use leftover wallpaper to decorate accessories in the room, suggest Extension Service home economists. You can cover a wastebasket, a tissue box holder, or a window shade.

Grandpa's
Garden
For the folks who wanted to know more about drying herbs, you should harvest before the plant flowers. After herbs bloom, their aroma becomes more pungent and loses its delicate quality.
Be sure the leaves or stalks are completely free of dampness. Otherwise mold will appear on your dried herbs. Wash herb stem and drain well. Put in a brown paper bag and close with a twisty or rubber band.
Hang the bag upside down in a well-ventilated room for at least a week or until leaves are dry enough to crumble. Don't rush to crumble be sure those leaves are dry.
Store crumbled leaves in air-tight containers and enjoy.
To preserve chives and parsley, the method is somewhat different. Spread chives over a thin layer of noniodized salt on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with more salt, add more chives, etc. Put in a 200 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes.
When dry and stiff, shake out salt, crumble chives and store in airtight jars. Use salt-flavored chives cooking meats and vegetables.
Parsley dries best when spread on a cookie sheet and dried for three minutes in a 400 degree oven. Turn it over and leave in oven two more minutes.
Frank Culpepper, Columbus, says he has found a way to keep birds out of his garden. He cuts streamers from cloth or aluminum foil and ties them to a string stretched over his vegetables. When the streams blow in the breeze, the birds fly away.
John McConnell has found a way to keep cucumber beetles away from his garden. "I fill a mayonnaise jar lid with mothballs and set it near my plants. Those bugs leave my plants alone."
If your sprayer is always clogging up, try Joan Mitchell's trick of stretching a nylon stocking over the mouth of the sprayer. The filter catches lots of undissolved mixtures which could clog it up.
To get rid of weeds on your garden path, pour hot salt water on them. Be careful not to get the salt water on any other part of your garden since it kills without discrimination.
4-H CAMPERS
Approximately 1,500 Georgia 4-H members will go camping each week throughout the summer. The 1980 season opened last week at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton, Camp Chatham near Savannah Beach, Camp Fulton near Atlanta, and Camp Wahsega in the mountains of Lumpkin County. Four-H camps are a part of the University of Georgia Extension Service youth program.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
Testing the moisture content and actual weight of various grains grown in Georgia is important to the farmer's pocketbook. The responsibility for making those determinations fall on the Weights and Measures Division of the State Agriculture Department.
Regina Babb, a Laboratory Technician with Weights and Measures uses a new computerized moisture research tool which is capable of performing a number of simultaneous gram sample tests. Quick determinations can be obtained on all basic grain samples, including temperature, weight and moisture percentage with the new research device.
