The Danger?
Eyesight is our most vital sense. We prize it but frequently take it for granted. We fear losing it, but we really know little about preserving it. There is much that each individual can do to preserve and protect his vision.
As we approach, summertime with increased outdoor activities
and greater risk of injury, the Georgia Society of [Ophthalmology suggest precautions for prevention of eye injur|ies.
Nature has provided our eyes with highly developed protective mechanisms. The bony socket wards off many dangerous blows; the fatty tissue around the eye cushions it from direct injury; the flow of tears washes out

many foreign bodies; and the eyelids and lashes are highly sensitive with the eyelids closing quickly when danger threatens.
Where some eye injuries may not be avoided, many can be prevented by use of safety glasses or goggles. Contact lenses are not protective devices so contact lens wearers should afford themselves the same eye protection as anyone else.
Safety glasses, with heat or chemically treated lenses, should be worn in even the most routine of activities such as hammering a nail or working in the home workshop. The number of eyes seriously damaged by metallic fragments from a hammer or a nail as the two pieces of metal are struck together could be avoided by the use of safety glasses.
Even regular glasses have prevented eye injuries from such unexpected missiles as lead fishing weights and flying fish hooks.
Individuals involved with chemicals, metallic grinding, automotive or other machinery should own and use protective

June Dairy Month Focuses On Progress, Production

This is the dairy that Jack built

It's heart is a modern milking parlor built of concrete and steel. Twice each
day, Jack's cows come to the milking parlor where they are washed with warm water. An electrode implanted in each cow's neck emits a signal that is received and recorded by a computer when the cow enters a milking stall.

The Georgia peanut crop is over 80 percent planted with stands running good to excellent. Georgia growers produce over 40 per cent of the nation's peanuts each year. Jody Sellers, Georgia Peanut Princess, surveys peanuts ready to be planted on part of the state's 510,000 peanut acres.

Back Yard Farming

Vegetable Gardening Efforts

Reward Table, Pocketbook

Vegetable gardening can be an effective way to fight inflation, provide

fresh, nutritious vegetables for the family and put some extra money in your

pocket. Everyone may not have the green thumb needed to turn a vacant lot

into a garden of Eden but those who enjoy growing plants may be able to turn a

hobby into a profitable business.

Neighbors and friends who don't

A major problem in the poultry
industry, coccidiosis, may have been solved by a poultry science graduate student at the University of
Georgia College of Agriculture. Greg Mathis successfully produc-
ed strains of chickens and guinea fowl which were immune to any
known cocridia. Coccidiosis is caused by parasitic
protozoans and has been one of the most dreaded but common problems in the poultry industry during the past century. According to Mathis' research, it may be possible to
develop and commercially produce hybrid birds not susceptible to the

While an attendant attaches the milking machine to the cow, the computer orders an automatic feed bin to dispense exactly the amount of food the cow needs. When the cow has given her quota of milk, the computer activates a switch that

unhooks the milking machine and swings it out of the way. The computer records the weight of milk alongside the cow's identification number.
At a signal, all the cows in the barn amble out in single file, to be replaced by the next group.
Science fiction? No. That is all in the foreseeable future for Georgia's dairymen. In the "good old days" on the family dairy, a farmer spent an hour and a half morning and evening milking his seven cows. Today it takes the same amount of time, but the dairyman milks 100 or more cows. The average Georgia dairy in 1979 milked 135 cows daily. Of course, that average farm may

Dear Editor: Would you please run a picture of a Praying Mantis
so people will know what they look like. I killed one as
a child because I didn't know what it was. Now that I know the value of this wonderful insect I protect them whenever I have the chance. I'm sure others would too if they could see what one looks like.
Clyde White (Editor's note: Praying Mantis are one of the most fascinating insects known to man. They are beneficial in all
stages of life. If you see one in your yard, make him wel-
come.

Dear Editor: The following formula was given to me by a repu-
table marble company many years ago for cleaning old stained monuments. A historian friend and I have used it on old monuments where the inscriptions were not legible. It does a fantastic job cleaning old
tile, too. 1 gallon water 2 Tablespoons clear white vinegar 1/2 box table soda 1/2 box Ajax
This formula will not turn marble monuments yellow like bleach. For badly stained marble, add 1 1/2 cups ammonia to a gallon of water and rinse well.
Use the finest grade of sandpaper first on the monument, then apply the cleaning solution with
steel brush or steel wool pads. Everyone seems to enjoy the FARMERS AND CON-
SUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. When I finish with mine, I pass it on to someone and am taking some to residents at Budd Terrace and Wesley Woods where I do some volunteer work with some of the other Pilot Club of Atlanta members.

FOREST FIRE
Fire can be an enemy of the forest or it can be a valuable tool. Bill Murray of the Exten sion Service says the forests of South Georgia are such that fire can be a part of overall management. "With out controlled burning," he says, "fire hazards can accu mulate and excessive hard wood growth can make pine forests less productive. Of course, conditions must be right for controlled burning." Check with your local forest ranger.
BUILDING HOUSES
The National Association of Home Builders figures that building 1,000 homes gen erates about $110 million in economic activity. And that does not include what is spent on furnishings and ap pliances.

All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blaeberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blaeberries to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.__ ___

Vegetable Selection: Planting more of these vegetables all the family enjoys means less waste. In crease planting of vegetables such as okra, beans and tomatoes that are used fresh, canned and frozen.
Labor Supply: In most situations it is possible to plant more than you can harvest. A bushel of sweet corn can be harvested in about 10 minutes, a bushel of tomatoes will take a little longer while a bushel of beans may require over one hour. Some vegetables such as cabbage only require one harvest while others like okra must be harvested every other day for 8 to 10 weeks.
Most vegetables require immed iate harvest when they reach maturity and soon become worthless if harvest is delayed. To reduce

peak labor demands make smaller plantings of each vegetable but more plantings over a longer period of time. A gardener might plan to grow the crop to maturity then sell the crop for someone else to harvest.
Some families join together to grow a garden. This method provi-

Dairy Month
(Continued From Page 1)
not have all the latest technology that Jack's dairy has. Yet. But the capital investment in dairy techno logy now equals about $5,000 per cow. And, while each dairyman se lects the methods most suitable to him, most modern dairies have some similarities.
When a cow is milked, the milk goes through a sealed tube to a pressurized vat. This reduces the chance of contamination and retards spoilage. Huge tank trucks make daily rounds of the dairies and pump milk from the cooling vats into refrigerated tanks for hauling to milk processing plants.
There, the milk is pasteurized to further reduce the risk of harmful bacteria. Then it is homogenized to disperse cream throughout the milk.
Processed milk is put into paper cartons or plastic bottles, sealed, and sent to your food store. All this takes place in a matter of hours, insuring that your milk arrives fresh.
Increased mechanization in dairying has had the same effect as in other industries. It has created a trend to fewer and larger dairies.
There were 4,000 dairies in Geor gia in 1950; in 1979 there were 950, with an average of 135 cows each. From a total of 128,000 cows, Geor gia dairymen produced 113 million gallons of milk. Georgia consumers bought 87 million gallons of this as fresh, fluid milk. That's 22 gallons of milk for every Georgia citizen.
r
Now, as we begin Dairy Month, is a good time to remember that Geor gia's dairymen contribute to the economy and the good health of our state.

Washing and rinsing dishes by hand may not be such a good idea -- if you are trying to save energy. The hand method, if used three times a day, consumes more hot water and energy than one load a day in an au tomatic dishwasher.
FRESH FISH

Fresh fish can be stored in the re frigerator all right, but it is a good idea to double-wrap it in an airtight wrapping material. For best quality, use fish within one day, advise Ex tension Service home economists.
periodic eye examination by an eye physician or ophthalmologist. If your eyes have not been examined for medical diseases such as glaucoma, cataract, etc., have it done soon -- it may save your sight.

A Day at the Cookie Factory
When you pick up those delicious looking cakes and cookies at the grocery store, they have already been checked closely by a professional sanitarian from the state Agriculture Department. The Department has some 100 field force inspectors to keep check on virtually every food product offered to the consumer. Sanitarian Dorman Collins in dark helmet, left, checks assembly fine at a Columbus baking company with plant superintendent Don Wilson and other employees. Right, Collins and Wilson examine finished product as it is packaged for shipment.

Grandpa's
Garden
Spencer Jones, Griffin, has found a way to keep deer out of his garden. "Human hair from barber shops or beauty shops spread around the garden or other places eaten by deer will keep them away. I have tried it and had good results."
For those with tender, mosquitoattracting skin, try this old-fashion ed deterrent. Rub your skin with ap ple-cider vinegar before sitting out side after dark. A little goes a long way so be careful not to repel people as well as bugs.
Jane Kingley, a recent visitor from England, shared her secret for growing fabulous geraniums. In England, she advised, gardeners mix about two ounces Epsom salts with two gallons of water and spray the foliage every 10 to 14 days. "Aim for the leaves since this mixture feeds the foliage and makes the most luxuriant large green leaves your geraniums ever had.'' ,-
To enchance blooms, Ms. Kingley suggested mixing a level teaspoon saltpeter to a gallon of water. Pour enough mixture on the soil to thor oughly moisten. This mixture goes in the soil, not on the leaves.
If raccoons are eating more from your garden than you are, try fencing in your garden with chicken wire. Raccoons will not dig under anything - they climb over it. When they try to climb a chicken wire fence, it will not support their weight. The "frightening" exper ience is said to scare them away from the garden.
Smelly vases are a real problem for people who enjoy cut flowers. Fill it with a mixture of 1/2 cup vine gar to three cups water and one tablespoon salt. Soak about 24 hours and scrub in hot, sudsy water.
You can also add a little ammonia to the water when you wash your vase. It supposedly will help the next bouquet of flowers last longer and improve the smell of your vase.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Beekeeping Adds Value To Georgia Agriculture

Most people who consider the season's first hum of the honeybee as a sure sign of spring would be surprised to learn that the tiny insect is credited directly with a 200 million dollar annual contribution to Georgia agriculture.

Check Weather
Before You Plant
There is a new weather service available on many public television stations. The 15 minute program is presented by professional meteorol ogists of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and covers all weather information as well as a report on soil temperatures every Wednesday.
A.M. Weather is aired on Channel 30, WETV in Atlanta, at 8:15 am and after June 9 also at 6:45 am. Other stations in Georgia air the program at 7 ;45 am.
Secure Documents
Needed for School
If your child starts school in the fall, you should apply now for a certified copy of the child's birth certificate. Georgia school systems require this as proof of age for children starting school for the first time. Officials warn not to wait until the last minute and risk not getting it on time.
The quickest way to get a certified copy of a birth certificate is from the vital records custodian in the county health department, or from the courthouse of the county in which the child was born.
A request also can be made to the Vital Records Unit, Department of Human Resources, Room 217-H, 47 Trinity Avenue, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30334.
It can take up to six weeks to get a certified copy of a birth certificate from the state office.
Requests for birth certificates should include the person's full name, date and place of birth, father's full name and mother's full maiden name. There is a $3 fee. If mailed in, the fee should be paid with a U.S. Postal Money Order or a certified check.

Authorities estimate that honey bees perform 85 percent of the poll ination required for fruits and agri cultural crops. Add to that a USDA report which says at least 90 agri cultural crops are either totally dependent on honeybees for pro ductivity or yield more than double when cross-pollinated by bees, and their importance begins to come into clear focus.
Agricultural officials calculate the worth of bees to agriculture as 20 times the actual dollar value of their initial cost and upkeep. The experts use these figures, combined with crop volume in the state, to arrive at the phenomenal 200 million mark.
Bees, in another area, are also extremely important to Georgia. The state is the largest producer of queen and package bees in the United States. Georgia bees are shipped to virtually every corner of the U.S. and Canada as well as being exported to a number of foreign countries.
The Entomology Division of the Agriculture Department plays a key role in the state's beekeeping nidustry as well as providing an im portant role to the garden enthu siast.
Department entomologists provide an inspection service to control the start and spread of honeybee diseases. The movement and sale of bees and beekeeping equipment is scrutinized by Department experts who make sure that all such trans actions are certified. In fact, a cert ificate of health is required before bees can be advertised for sale in the MARKET BULLETIN.
In addition, inspections and re commendations will be made on request for the bee hobbiest.
Most people involved in beekeep ing agree that it is one of the "most interesting phases of nature . . . and whether it is done as an occupation or hobby, the magnetism and fas cination never dwindle."
