Riding the Trail
Popularity Grows
Competitive trail riding rapidly is becoming one of the nation's most popular horse activities. While far from a new sport, it is gaining in popularity due primarily to the efforts of the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC).
This body was organized in 1961 for the purpose of sanctioning competitive trail rides under a uniform judging system. The objectives of NATRC are:
To stimulate greater interest in the breeding and use of good horses possessed of stamina and hardiness as qualified mounts for trail use;
To demonstrate the value of selection and soundness of the proper horses for a long ride;
To learn and demonstrate the proper methods of training and conditioning horses for a long ride;
To encourage horsemanship in competitive trail riding;
To demonstrate the best methods of caring for horses during and after long rides without the aid of artificial methods or stimulants.
Competitive trail riding should not be confused with endurance riding.
Our guest columnist this week is Jane Hill-
egas, Secretary-Treasurer, Region Five North
American Trail Ride Conference, 3265 Bran-
dywine Place NW Marietta, Georgia 30064).
The latter sport, also gaining in popularity, is actually a controlled race against time over a given distance of generally 50 to 100 miles.
NATRC provides both one-day, two-day and three-day rides with appropriate points toward the annual championships awarded the finishing horses. Riders do not have to be members of NATRC to compete in a ride, but only members can compete for annual points.
Daily mileage in the open division (for horses over five years of age] is between 25 and 40 miles, depending on the steepness of the terrain, covered in six and a half to seven hours riding time.
Novice division riders cover a shortened course of approximately 20 miles. The novice division is primarily for young horses (aged four to five] and for new comers to the sport.
The main objective is to work all of the horses over an identical trail in

Reduce Problems in Summer
Animal health experts of the Georgia Department of Agriculture warn that the first warm days of spring signal a period when particular care should be taken in dealing with the possibility of rabies.
Sunflowers Offer Possibilities
As New Energy Alternative
Many alternate energy sources are under investigation including flower power - sunflower oil. Preliminary tests by U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists indicate sunflower oil holds great potential as a substitute for die-
sel fuel or as a mixture in diesel fuel.
Producers Reaffirm
Three Commissions
Georgia producers of sweet potatoes, tobacco and peaches have overwhelmingly reaffirmed their commodity commissions by vote. In recent referendums these producers extended the commodity commissions, as required by law, for three additional years.
The Tobacco Commission was approved by a favorable vote of more than 96% while the Sweet Potato Commission received a 97% favorable vote and the Peach Commission received a 93% favorable vote.
Dynamometer test of a Deere 4020 tractor using edible grade sunflower oil (SFO) gave the following results. The percent sunflower oil mixture varied from 100 percent diesel to 100
percent SFO.

Veterinarians suggest that all farm and domestic animals receive the necessary vaccine immuniza-
tions. The disease was diagnosed as far
north as the south Atlanta area last year, but is usually most prevalent in the less populated southern parts of the state.
Health officials say racoons, skunks, bats and fox are historically the most common carriers.
However, during the spring and summer seasons domestic animals find themselves more susceptible through outside contact with wilder species.
All those factors combined make the warmer seasons a more dangerous rabies period for humans.
Contrary to popular belief a suspect animal with which a human has come hi contact should not be imme-
diately destroyed if at all avoidable. Cage the suspected animal for seven to ten days for observation and testing. Physicians and veterinarians should be immediately consulted to participate in the observation period.
Any suspected rabies is a critically serious matter, agree physicians and vets and every precaution should be implemented for the well being of the victim.
Making the Most Of Solar Energy Seminar Planned
Three of Georgia's outstanding poultry farmers were honored recently. Governor George Busbee presented Georgia Poultry Federation award certificates to [1-r] Jack Tanner, Bacon County, Commercial Egg Producer of the year, Fred Burden, Oconee County, Hatching Egg Producer of the year, and John Stamey of Habersham County, Broiler Grower of the year.
Atlanta area Cooperative Extension Service offices are sponsoring a mini-seminar on solar energy Monday, April 21, in the auditorium of
the North Fulton Government Annex building on Roswell Road. The seminar will begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. There is no charge for
the seminar, but reservations should be made through your county agent.
Specialists from the University of
Georgia will be the featured speakers on such topics as "Using Solar Heating in Homes", "Landscaping for Climate Control", and "Econom-
ics of Domestic Solar Use".

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Dear Friends: Here is a human interest story involving this pub-
lication I think you might want to hear. It involves one of your advertisers.
I heard about it through Kays Gary, a columnist for the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER who wrote a column on March 14 entitled "Ruby is Poor, but She's Rich".
It seems that a Charlotte couple, Leon and Dorothy Guttman, wanted to purchase some begonia plants and turned to your BULLETIN wherein Ruby Coalson [Route 1, Bremen] had advertised double begonias at $2.50.
They sent their check but meanwhile Ruby had received many other orders, too many to fill the Guttman's order. So she returned it and enclosed a 15 cents stamp to replace the one they used in placing their order!
The Guttman's were astounded. Now I am astounded.
What a representation of the integrity of Georgia's farmer merchants!
Sherwood MacRae Box 3044-A Charlotte, North Carolina 28203
Dear Editor: I am writing this letter as sincere advice to all Geor-
gians. I ordered some blueberries from a nursery in South Dakota that did well in the spring but died in the heat of the summer.
Next to them at the same time I set out some rabbiteye blueberries I had ordered from North Carolina. They are doing beautiful, still a year later.
My advice is to order blueberries as close to home as possible. Most of my fruit trees were purchased at local stores and grown in Tennessee. They are all doing wonderful.
Mrs. Franklin Avery Routes, 119 Cooper Street Albany, Georgia 31705
Dear Editor: I would like to contact any rabbit raisers in the
middle Georgia area that would be interested in pooling their rabbits for transportation to a commercial buyer.
Roy S. Rogers Route 6, Box 417 Eastman, Georgia 31023.
Dear Editor: Sure do enjoy your BULLETIN. Will you please print
in the BULLETIN what I can use to kill mites. I would like to have a powder for the chickens and a spray for the house of the chicks. I have just a few but I feel I should control them.
B. A. Moody 2430 Ravencliff Rd. College, Park, Georgia 30349 [Editor's note: Our Entomology division advises that you should use Co-Ral or Rabon for the chickens and house. Be careful and follow label directions. ]

COOKING MEAT
A meat thermometer is a good investment. Extension Service home economists say a thermometer is especially important if you like your beef cooked rare. Beef is considered rare when roasted to 140 degrees, medium at 160, and well done at 170. The home economists point out that these are internal temperatures taken in the center of the roast.
EGG STATE
Georgia is the second largest egg producing state in the nation. (California is first.) In Georgia, approximately 20 million hens lay some 12 million eggs every day. That's 4.7 billion in a year.

Molded Salads
Salads made with gelatin are relatively easy, but quite tasty and attractive. Follow directions carefully for the flavored and unflavored gelatins. They dissolve differently. Also remember to let gelatin thicken to the consistency of egg whites before adding fruits or vegetables. Allow it to thicken completely before adding a separate layer.
Show off a gelatin salad in a clear glass bowl or unmold it. If a salad is to be unmolded on a hot, humid day, reduce the water in the recipe by 1 /4 to 1 /3 cup. This will make the gelatin firmer and less likely to break or melt. Salad molds can be plain or fancy, large or small. A mixing bowl, set of custard cups, bundt pan, etc. could be used as a mold as well as those made especially for gelatin.
To unmold a salad, loosen edges with the tip of a sharp knife. Dip the mold into hot water for just a couple of seconds. Place a plate on top of the mold and flip both over. Shake the mold gently and the gelatin should release. If not, repeat dipping the mold in hot water, or soak a cloth towel in hot water, ring it out and press it around the mold and into any crevices. Reapply until the salad slides out easily.
The Sunshine salad and Tri-Color salad could be unmolded, but the Orange Mountain salad does not set up for molding.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breed ing horses should ask to see the re gistration papers before leaving pre mises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the sell er promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare w ill ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin sh ould have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

PET FIRST AID
Your pet suffers a fracture. What to do? Take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible, advise Extension Ser vice specialists. If you have to wait more than an hour before seeing the doctor, a splint can be made with rolled newspapers. Be careful not to create a tourniquet when applying the splint, if the fracture has broken the skin, do not put anything in the wound just cover it with a bandage.
SKIPPED STITCHES
Every home seamstres has problems with skipped stitches occasionally. Carolyn Joyner of the Extension Service says one reason may be that the needle is the wrong size, or the wrong type for the fabric. She advises: be sure to use a ballpoint needle for knit fabrics, a sharp-point needle for woven fabrics and a wedge-point for leathers and vinyls.

UNCOOKED JAMS
You can add zest to meals with uncooked jams and jellies. Extension Service home economists say these products can be made from fresh or frozen fruit. A standard recipe using commercial pectin and sugar should be followed. The home economists point out that uncooked jams and jellies must be kept cold. Storage time is three weeks in the refrigerator or one year in the freezer.

percent diesel fuel for 10 minutes before the mixture was fed into the engine. The SFO mixed easily with diesel fuel and showed no tendency to separate when left undisturbed for a period of several days.
A small amount of smoke was visible when load was applied (with dynamometer) using 100 percent SFO, but no smoke was visible using ASFO under no-load conditions nor at any time with pure diesel fuel.
The current bulk price of edible grade vegetable oils, including SFO, is about $2.25 per gallon. Oils for use as fuels could be lower in quality and would therefore be less expensive.
The results given are from one particular tractor engine operated at 65 degrees F and even though the engine ran very well on SFO oil mixtures, it should not be assumed that all diesel engines would do as well.
Cooler air temperatures may increase oil viscosity unless the fuel is

mond, Head, Extension Engineering Depart-
ment, Cooperative Extension Service, Uni-
versity of Georgia, Athens.)________
preheated. Also, no results on durability of injection equipment or engine life has been made at this time.
Estimates show the energy balance of SFO to be quite favorable. In fact,. with conventional farm operations and oil extraction methods currently in use - one pound of onfarm useage would produce ten pounds of sunflower oil. If reduced tillage were successfully used, this ratio could be further improved.
Sunflower seed yield 35 to 45 percent oil on a weight basis depending upon variety and growing conditions. Over five million acres of oilseed sunflowers were planted in the U.S. in 1979. Sunflowers can be grown over the entire North American agricultural areas under extreme conditions of moisture and temperatures on marginal land.
Yields currently vary from 500 to 3000 pounds of seed per acre within a 90 day growing season. Production techniques are reasonably well defined and improving.
The above yields convert, at 45 percent oil, to 0.7 to 4.4 barrels of oil per acre. Sunflowers can be double or triple cropped in favorable climates.
Much work needs to be done before sunflower or other vegetable oil become a recommended engine fuel or heating fuel. Flower power does hold promise and some reports show the exhaust smells better.

Grandpa's Garden
E. L. Gardener, Bartow County, says he has tomatoes earlier than
any of his friends cause he makes a "little cage for his babies." "Make a cage of 4x4 inch wire about 4 feet high, top the cylinder with a plastic

If you want to enhance the appearance and flavor of your straw-
berries, Katie Matthews, Macon, tells us that she adds a layer of pine-
straw mulch under her berry plants. According to Ms. Matthews, the acid in the pinestraw makes the straw-
berries taste better and helps keep
the weeds out of her garden. While on the subject of strawber-
Ties, you may have trouble with birds attracted to your lucious fruit. Lay a few old lenghts of garden hose around your strawberry patch to discourage the birds from coming near. They think it is a snake.
You can also try the same trick in a fruit tree. An old garden hose
drapped over a few limbs will often save your fruit from the birds.
It may cost a little more but some folks say it works - aluminum foil in the garden. According to one of our expert gardeners use heavy duty foil, cut out holes for the plants and hold down edges with rocks. The foil keeps the ground cool, conserves moisture, discourages pests and takes advantage of all possible light.
To keep cabbage worms from eating your cabbages, Mr. D. L. Jones, McDonough, says he sprinkles his cabbages with the trimmings from his geranium plants. According to Mr. Jones, the worms don't care for the geranium fragrance.

Can fuel be advertised by the liter?
R. F. Dublin Yes, if it is being sold by the liter.
When sold by the gallon, it is adver tised by the full gallon price. Fuel sold by the half gallon may use full or half gallon figures. The method used must be indicated on the sign. In addition the price shown on the signs should agree with the one posted on the pump.
What are these insects? I am worried that they will bite my children.
R. D. Waycross
The insects are locust borers and
will not sting anyone. They were probably brought into the house with some firewood. Removal of the
wood should end your worries.
About how much salt should a person have each day?
G. G. Blue Ridge The 1980 Recommended Dietary Allowances [RDA] suggests halving the usual intake of sodium [primarily as a salt] to a range of three to eight grams per day to prevent high blood
pressure. Five grams of salt equals one teaspoon. This can be accom plished by reducing the salt used hi cooking and at the table and cutting back on consumption of obviously salty foods. For specific dietary changes or health problems, you should contact your doctor.

Safety Precautions Help Avoid Many Lawnmower Accidents
Mexican Bean Beetle
Remember last summer when you saw those little spotted beetles that looked a lot like ladybugs on your beans? Those little buggers were Mexican Bean beetles and they were killing your crop.
Mexican Bean beetles are the black sheep of the ladybug family. They resemble their "good" cousin in that they are round-backed, broad domed and have small black spots on their backs. These bugs, however, are pale yellow or coppery brown and there are no markings between the head and body. The 16 small dots on the back appear in three rows.
These beetles like all kinds of beans but particularly favor limas. You should watch for skeletonized leaves as the first visible sign of their destruction.
Mexican Bean beetles spend the winter in debris near or in the garden so they are ready to attack next year when the new crop is ready. Sanitation is important because it deprives the beetle of his winter home.
There are several methods of control which have developed. Some are approved by entomologists, others are home remedies which are difficult to evaluate.
The first line of defense is handpicking the beetles off the plants and dropping them into a can of water topped with kerosene. If the infestation is severe, you may consider spraying with Sevin or Malathion.
Home remedies include companion plantings or marigolds, rosemary, summer savory, petunias, nasturtiums or a clove of garlic in every hill of beans.
Heavy spring and summer rains apparently keep beetle populations down and a few days of drought and extreme heat may destroy the entire infestation. Indications show that earlier plantings of beans do better than those planted late.
FOOD BUDGET
How much should you spend for food? There is no single dollars-andcents answer to this question, according to Extension Service specialists. They say you should spend enough to give your family nutritious meals they enjoy eating. Many combinations of foods at various levels of costs can do that. However, the less money you spend, the more careful you have to be to select foods that are nutritious as well as economical.
More than 57,000 people are treated in hospitals every year for power mower-related accidents some even die.
Most of the accidents, say experts, are caused through carelessness and
could be prevented.
A lawnmower, riding mower or garden tiller-type machine is basicly a "cutting instrument" and without careful human direction, it's not particular about what it cuts.
The machine operator, those around the work area, and in some cases those far away and completely unrelated to the grass-cutting operation, have been badly injured with projectiles which have been thrown great distances when struck by fast moving mower blades.
According to the U. S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, "proper machine design is most important."
The Commission cautions that all mowers should have chutes which direct the discharge downward and away from the operator, footguards at the rear of the machine, and a fuel exhaust located away from trimmed grass to prevent spark ignition of dried material.
Regardless of how experienced "you think you are", always read the instruction book after purchasing a new mower.
Before beginning to mow, always clear the area of stones and other debris ... wear sturdy shoes ... never cut wet grass and never start the machine in a closed area.
Never adjust wheel height, attempt to unclog discharge chute while the mower is running or cut large twigs or limbs.
Always watch your footing, particularly on slopes. Steer a hand mower across slopes, never up and down.
On the other hand, advises the Safety Commission, riding mowers should be driven up and down slopes for stability.
Get Ready for
Mildew Season
Mildew is always a problem in the South but a rainy damp season can make it worse. Warm humid weather encourages mildew growth but there are some positive steps you can take to eliminate it from your house.
Keep your home clean, well-ventilated and dry. Cool air holds less moisture than warm air so take advantage of cool nights for a thorough airing.
Some commercial moisture absorbers are available which contain calcium chloride, activated alumina or silica gel. These products are good in closets where there is little air movement and lots of dampness.
Clothing and household fabrics, leather, wood and books require special care when threatened with mildew damage. Don't let damp or wet clothing lie around. Do not place damp soiled clothing in the clothes hamper; dry it out first.
Always brugh off mildew outside so you do not scatter the spores elsewhere in the house.
Use the mower only for what it was designed to do.
Never lift, tilt or place it in a position off the ground in an effort to trim shrubs or hedges.
When filling the mower's gas tank, be aware of the vapors of the fuel. Don't smoke when engaged in such an operation.
And, by all means, keep children and pets away from the machine and the area being worked.
Riding the Trail
(Continued From Page 1)
the same length of time, thereby having a basis of fair comparison for determining the horse's soundness, condition and manners.
While this is not a race, judgement in time and pacing is important, the winners usually being those who rode their horses at a consistant pace throughout the ride, rather than hurrying up and waiting.
One of the great features of competitive trail riding is that no special type or breed of horse is necessary or favored; the prime requisite is a well-conditioned, calm horse. Riders condition their horses by following well-planned training schedules involving careful work over all types of terrain.
Straight-away trotting, walking up and down progressively steeper hills and working in soft sand are a few of the methods used to develop the muscles, heart and lungs to the utmost.
The rides are judged by a team of at least two judges, one of whom must be a practicing veterinarian.
The open and novice divisions are divided into junior (riders aged ID17], lightweight (rider and tack weighing between 140-190 pounds) and heavyweight (rider and tack weighting over 190 pounds).
Judging is based upon each horse starting the ride with a score of 100 points, evaluated as follows: soundness - 40% condition - 40%, manners - 15% and way-of-going - 5%. While all of the judging is on the horse, riders also compete for horsemanship awards and are judged on the care and handling of their mounts throughout the entire ride.
Georgia is included in region five of NATRC and many NATRC-sanctioned rides are held in the state.
