Need For FFA
Greater Today
There is one organization which has been promoting the idea of agriculture for over 50 years, the Future Farmers of America. This high school organization is a vital part of the high school curriculum and the vocational agriculture program today.
It was begun in 1928 based upon the need of training youth in
the field of farming, and has grown into a national organization of 510,000 members with our own state association consisting of almost 17,500 members.
The need for the FFA is greater today than it ever
(Our guest columnist this week is Shan Young, president, Georgia Future Farmers of America, Route 3, Box 139-D, Reynolds, 31076.)_________________
was before because the science of agriculture has grown from the "grass roots" farmer to a more specialized industry including forestry, food processing, food retailing, and many other important areas.
Agriculture is farming on a large scale, but it also is science at work for the well-being of the world. The FFA has realized this all along, and consequently has grown into the only high school organization with a federal charter, experiencing continuous growth with each passing year. That need will always be there and so will the FFA.
When looking for a one-word definition that best describes our organization, the word that comes to mind is "OPPORTUNITY". FFA provides its members with the opportunity to increase and expand their knowledge through the various FFA functions and programs.
Besides this, FFA promotes the idea of improving our communities and government and using our experiences in helping educate urban dwellers on the concepts of agriculture.
More than anything else, the FFA builds character, while teaching its members to be proud of our heritage. Today's youth are tomorrow's leaders and the FFA is vital to the future of all Americans in this respect.

Farmland Coming
The Spring Farmland Edition is coming March 21. The deadline for ads received in the MARKET BULLETIN office is March 7. Please remember that no realtors, brokers or dealers are allowed to advertise in this edition. Only individual farm owners wishing to sell their personal property for their own use may use this medium. A 30 word limit will be enforced. All farms should consist of five or more acres unless there is a farm operation currently existing there such as chicken houses or hog parlors. No subdivision property will be allowed. All ads must include the county where the land is located and only one ad per person per section will be allowed.
Melons, especially watermelons were an important staple 'in Egypt. The melon grew along the banks of the Nile and was one of the chief foods of the poorer class.
Along the river bank in the warm and moist environment, melons grew to great size often weighing more than 30 pounds.
Melons were one of the things the Israelites missed most when they left Egypt on their long journey. In Numbers 11:5 the complaints of the travelers referred to their longing for this Egyptian food.
QQ consumer line...
Lots of the time when I buy hamburger meat it's red and pretty on the outside and greyish-brown inside. Why are the stores allowed to sell it that way?
J.B. Moultrie The red color is due to air ex posure which causes a natural pigment in meat to combine with oxygen and produce the red color or "bloom." The interior of the meat does not have the red color as it has less exposure to oxygen.
I am planning my garden and want to buy seeds that will give me the best results. How can I tell if the seeds are any good?
R. F. Waycross Always select varieties best suited to your area and plant at recommended times. Check the germination percentages, test date and other information on the label. All seeds sold within the state must be tested every nine months. Other critical factors such as weather conditions will be beyond your control.

Fire Ant Help
Expected Soon
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved Mississippi's request to apply Ferriamicide to fire ant mounds. In light of this decision Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is optimistic that permission to use the new fire ant bait in Georgia will be granted soon.
If approved, only ground treatment will be allowed as aerial
application of such pesticides is now outlawed by the EPA.
