Quarter Horse
Multi-Purpose
Most people connected with the quarter horse are often %asked, "What is a quarter horse? Why is he called that? What is his purpose?
The American quarter horse may be found in a variety of circum-
stances, ranging from cowboys using him to push cattle across a running river to dashing 440 yards hi 21 seconds to win his part of the $1 million AilAmerican Futurity. You may find three or four small children sitting on the horse's back

in the yard, or you could see him going full speed to catch a calf in under eight seconds at the National Finals Rodeo. The quarter horse is intelligent, determined, easy to keep and train for many different uses.
Why is he called a quarter horse? Because, when properly mated, he is bred to excel all other breeds at a distance of one quarter of a mile. It is a contraction of the name under which the breed was known as far back as colonial times. In the 1600's he was called a "colonial quarter of a mile running horse."
The quarter horse of today is still well known for the roles he has filled for many years. But equally important, he has become well known for his versatility in other areas, such as conformation hi halter classes and as a performer in Western and English Classes. He is equally at home in the hunter and jumper events.
The American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia is an association of horsemen who range in interest from the one horse family who likes to breed their mare and raise foals, to the professional breeders and trainers who earn their living from quarter horses.
On Saturday, February 24th, the American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia will hold their Annual Field Day and Stallion Service Auction at Wills Park in Alpharetta.

Demand For Versatile Crop
Makes Sorghum Attractive
Sorghum may be the answer to Georgia's growing need for feed grains. It is a versatile crop that can be grown for grain, forage, silage, sugar/syrup (sweet sorghum) or a combination of these.
Roadside Produce Stands
Source of Income For Many
Roadside vegetable markets provide income for many Georgians during the growing season. Knowledge of some of the aspects both legal and otherwise may be helpful to growers since spring is just around the corner.
Quality Of Hay
Varies In Bales
The MARKET BULLETIN office has received several calls from people who were dissatisfied with the hay they purchased.
Remember, there is no standard weight for a bale of hay. The looser it is baled the less you get. For best results buy bales by the ton so you know exactly how many pounds of hay you are buying.
Also, if hay is baled with any moisture, it will mold. Ask to break open a bale at random. If the seller is reluctant to comply with your request, be careful.
Permits
Some cities and counties require that a business license be secured in order to set up a roadside market. To be on a safe side, check with the individual local authorities (city and county) in your area to find out if this is the case.
No roadside stand may be legally set up on a road or street right-ofway, as this is hi violation of state law. Individual personal property beyond right-of-ways perhaps is best.
Anyone growing produce on their own property may sell it there unhindered. However, persons obtaining produce elsewhere and selling it on their property must apply for a "special use" permit from the local county zoning commission unless the property is zoned commercial.
(Continued On Page 11)
In the past two years extreme weather conditions and high insect populations have cut Georgia's supply of available feed grains. Also livestock and poultry demands are increasing rapidly as the industries expand.
Sorghum's ability to meet this need makes it a good choice for production. Sorghum is drought tolerant. It can sit and wait for rain and then resume growth once moisture is available.
It is an excellent crop in most rotation schemes. Sorghum can be double-cropped following early season corn, vegetable crops, and winter grains and is adapted to minimum and no tillage programs.
Two grain crops from one planting (called ratoon cropping) is also feasible, especially in the southern part of the state. Ratooned sorghum is planted early in the spring when the soil temperature reaches 65-70 degrees F. The initial grain crop can be harvested during mid to late summer. The stubble is then removed (via baling or cutting for silage) and a relatively low rate of nitrogen fertilizer applied. The sorghum will tiller and a new grain crop can be harvested in late fall.

Plan Now For Strawberries;
Export Boom Expected Good Growing Sites Important
Following Foreign Visit
An Okinawan trade mission to Georgia is expected to result in a multi-million dollar boost to the state's overseas poultry sales.
The mission is visiting Georgia to tour the state's poultry center in and around Gainesville. During their two day visit they will also tour Atlanta's merchandise mart and several industrial, agricultural and manufacturing plants.
The 30 member mission has expressed strong interest in purchasing Georgia poultry and processed poultry products. The visit is expected to produce more than $5 million in immediate on sight poultry and poultry product sales for the state.
Want to have lots of strawberries this year? In just 31.5 square feet, you can grow 100 strawberry plants and produce enough strawberries to give a family of four a good supply for fresh use, preserving and freezing.
Growing sites are important in production. Choose an area that is in full sun and drains well but also holds moisture. Water is very important for strawberry plants but too much can be just as damaging as

too little. Do not plant following a rain when the soil is excessively
wet. Time is of the essence, so have
your 100 plants available for planting by March 1. You may want to order some plants of early, midseason and late varieties so that you will have fresh berries over a longer period. Check the chart for varieties adaptable to your area.
Order and buy only certified plants from a reliable plant producer. Too often, plants are acquired otherwise and the result is diseased plants with reduced yields and puzzled growers.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, February?, 1979

Dear Editor: I am writing in regard to a letter that appeared in the
December 13, 1978 "letters to the editor" column. Mr. Tatum referred to Job as being shaded by the gourd vine. I would like to point out that this was in error. It was Jonah who was shaded by the gourd vine. This can be found in Jonah 4:6.
Mrs. Elmer D. Gibbs P.O. Box 115 Pineview, Georgia 31071
Dear Editor:
I would like to share my idea for storing pecans.
I never put pecans in the refrigerator until I know
they are good and dry. I cut off cardboard boxes leav-
ing 2 or 3 inches high and cover the inside with paper
towels. I put the boxes on the dining room table and
stir once or twice a week. I let them stay for two to
four weeks before putting them in the deep freezer.
Pecans will develop an odor if they are put in freezer
damp. When you put pecans in plastic bags and are
not sure if they are dry you should punch holes in the
bag so they will not mildew. One damp piece of pecan
will cause the whole bag to mildew.

All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertis er and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are ad vertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberri^s to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.

COOKED OR NOT?
It's a good idea to know what kind of ham you are buying. Cooperative Extension Service specialists point out that some hams need to be cooked, while others are fully cooked and can be eaten as they come from the package. Read the label carefully. If you still aren't sure whether the ham is cooked or not, cook it thoroughly.

Sorghum Attractive
(Continued From Page 1)
The second crop already has an established root system. Additional seed costs are eliminated. The second crop can utilize the residual fertilizer remaining in the soil from applications to the first crop. Insecticides may be needed for the second crop to control midge and armyworms.
There is a better market for yellow or red seeded, low-tannin sorghum grain. Brown-seeded or high-tannin sorghums generally are bitter tasting and are lower in feeding quality than the red or yellow varieties. However, the brown-seeded varieties will retard birds better. If high-tannin sorghum grain is fed to livestock, supplemental protein should be added to the ration.
The feeding value of grain sorghum is generally considered to be about 95 percent that of corn. When both the grain and the stover are utilized, the sorghum plant will provide an almost complete ration. Feeding of the grain should be preceded by some type of processing (grinding, rolling, flaking, extruding, or steam cooking) to improve feed utilization.
Insect problems are generally not very severe when sorghum is planted early hi the spring. Later plantings may be subject to attack by lesser cornstalk borer, armyworms, and midge. Midge is a small orange, gnat-like insect which attacks the sorghum plant at flowering (when the plant starts shedding pollen). Insecticidal applications at approximately 5-day intervals during the flowering period (two or three applications) will generally control midge.
There are three general maturity groups in grain sorghum: short-season, medium, and late or fullseason. The short-season hybrids can be useful when other crops fail during the summer and a second crop is needed to mature before frost. Medium maturity hybrids generally fit well in various doublecropping programs.
Full-season hybrids are better suited to maximum use of the summer growing season. A good rule of thumb concerning maturity of a grain sorghum hybrid is the longer the maturity, the higher the yield.
Nevertheless, the hybrid and maturity group selected for planting must be coordinated with the cropping scheme, the date of planting, and the expected frost date.

Is it safe to eat food when the date that is stamped on it has passed? R.P.
Thomasville Your question is really to general for a definite answer. In most cases the food will be safe if it has been stored properly, although it may not be as fresh. However, several variables would affect our response, such as the type of food, the method of dating used on that product and the length of time that has passed. The date that is used on foods allows sufficient time for you to take it home, store for a reasonable length of time, and serve it to your family.
What are soil inoculants? W. D.
Sylvania Soil inoculants, according to our sources, may be described as bacteria implanted in the soil which under ideal conditions will fix nitrogen and thus enhance growth potential. This process requires an adequate supply of or ganic matter, adequate soil pH and fertility levels which Georgia soils do not possess in the proper ratios. Soils which do possess the proper ratios al
ready contain the bacteria supplied by these inoculants.

Produce Stands Source Of Income
(Continued From Page 1)
In many instances, persons wanting to sell produce in vacant lots (with the lot owners permission) must also obtain a "special use" permit. If you need this permit, now is the time to apply since it takes three months to get it. Contact your county zoning commission for further information.
Signs/Advertising
Signs and advertising are a problem-prone area for roadside markets. Placing your sign in the wrong place could result hi a fine of $1,000 or one year in prison or both.
The State Department of Trans-
portation is charged with regulating outdoor advertising in Georgia. Signs placed on highway or road right-of-ways are in violation of
state law. If your stand is set up in the pro-
per location as described previously, and the sign is within 100 feet of
the stand, no permit is required. Signs outside the 100 foot limit must qualify for a permit and the market must be located on commercially zoned property.
In counties or cities with no formal zoning, the sign must be within 600 feet of a bonified commercial or
industrial business.
For more information, contact the
Outdoor Advertising Office, Georgia
Department of Transportation.
Farmers' Markets Many growers utilize the seventeen state-owned Farmers' Markets across Georgia. These facilities require only a $1.50 gate fee for a pick-up load of produce which increases gradually as the load increases. An entire stall in the open sheds area can then be rented for $3.00 a day. The Atlanta State Farmers' Market is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world and is open seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. For more information, contact the Marketing Division of the Georgia Department of Agricul
ture. Sanitation
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has field sanitarians throughout the state responsible for enforcing regulations concerning the sanitary condition of produce in roadside stands.
If you observe contaminated or unsanitary produce, contact the De-
partment's Consumer Service Off ice, or call Ag Consumer Line at 1800-282-5852.

Strawberries
(Continued From Page 1)
Spade up the area you are using for the plants to a depth of 10-12 inches. Be sure to remove all grass and work out all the lumps.
Add three cubic feet of peat moss or half a large bale plus two pounds of hydrated lime plus 1/2 pound of 88-8 fertilizer.
If nematodes are present, or their presence is suspected, treat the soil with nematicide which may be purchased at most hardware and plant nursery stores. Immediately following the application of nematicide, work these materials well into the
soil. Smooth the surface with a rake and let it settle for several days.
Loosen the soil and transplant your plants about March 1. Force a hand trowel straight down into the soil, pushing the handle forward and backward to make a "V" shaped planting hole.
Place the plants in the holes with the roots in a downward position and firm the soil up around the
plants.
Water the plants thoroughly and
continue to water them when rain
fall is not adequate. Watering is
especially necessary throughout the
growing season.
Mulch the strawberry patch with
ground pine bark, pine needles '-or
seed-free grain straw. During the
first growing season, keep the srn^ll
flowers pinched off the plants and
get ready for strawberries.

Cypress wood is a favorite medium among shipbuilders for building sturdy flotilla. The wood is hard, fragrant and extremely resistant to water.
Biblical scholars accept the philosophy that cypress was the wood used by Noah to construct the ark. Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark and shalt pitch it within and with out with pitch. Genesis 6:14.
Cypress wood is again referred to in Isaiah 44:14. The wood was frequently used to make winepresses, rafters and ship decks. Its endurance is proven by the carved cypress doors which guarded,St. Peter's Church in Rome for more than 600 years.
Cypress trees grow tall and straight. Their foliage is evergreen and very aromatic when crushed. They produce small cones about one inch long.
Although cypress trees are not native to our climate, they have succeeded in Georgia in specimen plantings and as far north as St. Louis, Missouri.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
The gross value of production of Georgia's major crops [excluding live stock and poultry] increased by $294 million hi 1978 to a total of $1,126.7 million. According to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, this was a 35 per cent increase over the value of the drought-damaged crops of 1977. It was the fourth year out of the last five when the value exceeded the "billion doll ar mark", with only last year falling below that level.
New Tax Credits
Georgia Porkettes
Encourage Growth
For Farm Business
Several new federal income tax provisions have been enacted recently to encourage farm and other business owners to boost their capital investment.
Costs incurred after October 1978, to rehabilitate a building used for production in a business in many instances are now eligible for a 10 percent investment tax credit.
The structure concerned such as a chicken house, barn, etc., must have been in use 20 years or more. The improvements, which must have a useful life of five years or more, do not include enlarging the building.
There is also a new investment tax credit for new construction. This credit is geared specifically for buildings such as greenhouses, swine confinement buildings, milking parlors, poultry houses, etc. The buildings must be used only for their intended purpose and no portion should be used for storing feed, equipment, etc.
The 10 percent investment tax credit rate for purchases of new and used production machinery or equipment has been retained hi the new tax law. Credit is based on the investment cost of the equipment and machinery or the qualifying portion of it.
Fences used in production also qualify for full credit, since they have a useful life of 10 years or more.
For more information and a detailed guide to preparing your 1978 income tax return, request a copy of FARMER'S TAX GUIDE, 1979 Edition, (publication 225), available from your local IRS office.
Charter Members
The Georgia Porkettes is an organization that welcomes as a member any woman who is the wife of a pork producer or is interested in furthering the pork industry.
On December 12, 1978, Ann Norman, director of consumer re-
I lations for the National Pork ProIducers Council, I met with a group {of pork proI ducers' wives at [the Georgia Pork I Congress and I Trade Show at the j Rural DevelopIment Center in Tifton.________________
(Linda Deal is the president of the Georgia Porkettes, Route 1, Register, 30452.)
As a result of that meeting, officers were elected and a committee was formed to draw up the bylaws for the Georgia Porkettes. The bylaws will be presented at the first membership meeting February 8, 10 a.m. in conference room 1 of the Rural Development Center in Tifton.
The National Porkette officers were invited to attend the most recent meeting of the executive board of the National Pork Producers Council. We feel this signals a new era in the pork industry where husbands and wives will work together to promote the industry.
