1980 Looks Good
For Agribusiness
Economic forecasting is about the most popular form of business-oriented journalism this time of the year. Professional analysts, management consultants and journalists are striving to tell us just what to expect during the coming year.
There is no doubt we are in a recession, and it is affecting every
phase of our society. It doesn't take an expert to recognize that the major causes are inflation, increased interest rates, rising wages, increased government spending, more unemployment and energy shortages. We must cope with these problems

as we move into a new year of operation at all levels.
The agricultural industry will play an important role in helping our nation pull through the present recession. Agricultural production is strong in about every commodity.
There are a few agribusinesses having difficulty such as the chemical and fertilizer industries' however, our grain, vegetable, fruit, nut, cattle and swine industries are faring well. Poultry is having a few problems, but this industry does a fine job of regulating itself in difficult times. Pork production is on the increase and could affect the total meat industry.
Agribusiness firms processing, manufacturing, merchandising, wholesaling and retailing can adjust somewhat, but markets for agricultural production will dictate how well these sectors of industry will fare next year.
The success or failure of agriculture and agribusiness to cope with the present recession and do well in 1980 will depend largely on exports finding markets for our agricultural products in world trade.
It is a known fact that many countries of the world cannot produce

More Go.Counties Eligible
For Federal Crop Insurance
This year's official state Christmas tree, a huge 30 foot Eastern Red Cedar, will be on display in the Capitol rotunda through December 29. Weekdays, visitors are invited to see the tree from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, from 2 to 5 p.m. The tree, a gift to Georgia from Mr. and Mrs. Baron Davis of Newborn, is decorated with more than 2,000 crocheted snowflakes made by senior citizen groups across the state.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture's all-risk federal crop insurance program will be available in 15 additional Georgia counties in time for the 1980 spring planting, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
Pea nut Princess
Contest Underway
A new peanut princess is being sought to represent the Georgia's peanut industry for 1980. 1979 princess Jincy Turner will give up her crown February 2 in Tifton.
Daughters of peanut farmers throughout the state may enter the contest to compete for more than $1,000 in scholarship money and an opportunity to travel throughout the United States.
Entries must be received by January 21. Applicants must be between 17 and 22 years of age.
For entry forms contact your local county Cooperative Extension Service, Georgia Farm Bureau office or write Pageant, Georgia Peanut Commission, P.O. Box 967, Tifton 31794.

The Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIC) provides farmers the opportunity to cover unavoidable losses due to drought, excessive rain, hail, wind, hurricane, tornado, frost, freeze, winterkill, snow and lightning, insect infestation, plant disease, flood, wildlife, fire and earthquake.
Irvin said the addition was the maximum allowed under current law and legislation currently pending in Congress would permit expansion of the crop insurance program at a faster rate.
"This assurance," said Irvin, "provides Georgia's agricultural producers the opportunity to insure their major crops, thus guaranteeing themselves an established income should those crops be damaged or lost due to natural hazards."
The new counties are Burke, Crawford, Dougherty, Emanual, Evans, Floyd, Jefferson, Jenkins, Macon, Marion, Pulaski, Screven, Washington, Webster and Wheeler, bringing the total number of counties in the state eligible for the program to 60.

Wood Warms Many Georgians,
Conserves Energy, Saves Money
More than 375,000 Georgia homes this winter are using wood as a primary or supplemental source of energy. Officials with the Georgia Forestry Commis-
sion say the figures represent one in four households in the state with most of the wood being used for heating purposes.
A comprehensive survey by the
Georgia Forestry Commission and Georgia State University indicates
that Georgia households using wood for heating burn more than 800,000 cords annually, or just over 2 cords
per family. A cord of dry wood has the heating equivalent of 139 gallons, or 3.3 barrels, of oil.
Researchers using these compa-
rative heating values say that the annual consumption of 800,000 cords of wood in Georgia is equiva-
lent to 2,460,000 barrels of oil. $3ense hardwood such as oaks and
hickories burn relatively slow and
produce more heat per cord than softwoods. Cedar, pine and other
softwoods ignite easier and are desirable for a fast warm-up fire to remove the chill. For an all-day fire, a combinatien of hardwoods and softwoods burns long and provides sufficient heat for a normal size
area. A fire built between two hard-
wood logs lying across the front and back of the hearth will likely be most satisfactory. Seasoned or dry wood of any type produces more heat than
green or wet wood. Logs should be seasoned at least
three months after cutting, being careful to keep the supply in a dry place. Stack wood in a criss-cross

In the grocery store last week laying on the counter, I noticed some cured sausage meat and hams with "keep under refrigeration" in the
label. When I asked the store manager about it, he said it was not
necessary to store the meat under refrigerator.
W.B. Dallas
If the manufacturer or processor
feels the food should be stored under
refrigeration, and the label indi-
cates this fact, the store must
comply with these directions. Thank
you for calling. The regulations have
been explained to the store
manager.

(Editor's note: Allyson McGraw, Madison County Agent, has called to our attention the omission of two names in our December 12 article "Georgia 4-H'ers Claim 9 National Honors". Lynn Bishop of Madison County and Misty Steiglity of Paulding County each won $1,000 scholarships as winners of National 4-H Citizenship awards. Misty also received the Presidential tray presented on behalf of President Carter.) Dear Editor:
I would like to obtain a copy of the plans for building a standing quilt frame. If anyone has this information, please let me know.
Mrs. Mable Ellenburg Route 1, Box 253 Manchester, Ga. 31816 Dear Editor: I purchased a used two-row planter through an auction but have not been successful in finding bean and corn plates to fit it. CASE is painted on the hoppers but all the CASE people whom I have contacted say it isn't CASE. The one set of plates I have plus false plates and other related parts have a prefix "FL". I wonder if your readers can help me. It's a good planter but without plates -- no good! Milton R. Tanner Route 1, Box 271 Harrison, Ga. 31035

Dear Editor: Your help in locating a recipe for coconut cake would
be greatly appreciated. As I recall, my mother-in-law from Georgia used to make up to five or six thin layers in her hot cake griddle then would beat the icing with an old fashioned egg beater and pour onto the cake. The cake was slightly crunchy.
Barbara A. Hurst 3210 Roy BurtRd. "Kids in the Kitchen"
With Christmas day a memory and a few days left before school starts again, children will be looking for something to do. Here are a few ideas which are quick, easy, loaded with family fun, and tasty too!
Winter's Day Donuts
Vegetable oil
3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 Tablespoons solid shortening
2 eggs
3/4 cup milk
Heat oil (2-3 inches) in a deep fat fryer, electric skillet
or deep fry pan to 375 degrees F. With electric mixer, beat
1 1/2 cups of the flour and the remaining ingredients in
large mixing bowl. Use low speed to moisten ingredients,
then beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in remain-
ing flour. Turn dough onto well-floured surface, and coat
with flour. Roll gently til about 3/8 inch thick. Cut with a
floured donut cutter or use a glass and soft drink bottle to
punch out the holes. Slide donuts into hot fat and fry til
golden brown on both sides turning once. Drain on paper
towels (Do not prick donuts with a fork. It will let the oil in
and cause them to be greasy.) Now comes the fun. The
kids can take turns shaking the donuts, one at a time, in a
brown paper bag containing powdered sugar or
granulated sugar. Serve warm with a mug of hot
chocolate. What could be better on a cold winter's day.
Makes about 2 dozen.
No-Cook Peanut Fudge
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup. light corn syrup
2 cups instant non-fat dry milk 1 cup powdered sugar
powder
In large bowl, mix peanut butter, corn syrup, powdered
milk and powdered sugar together until smooth. You may
need to use your hands. Press into 9"xl 3" pan or roll pea-
nut butter mixture into one-inch balls. Place in refriger-
ator to chill. Makes about 3 dozen one-inch balls. For var-
iety, add raisins, coconut, or natural cereal.

Wood-Burning Appliances
Due to the energy crisis, the MARKET BULLETIN will publish notices for woodburning stoves and heaters. No other appliances are published in the BULLETIN except those used to heat farm buildings such as chicken
houses.
Portable Sawmills
For many years the MARKET BULLETIN has had a stringent policy restricting publication of sawmills or other items related to the lumber industry. This policy will remain in force with the exception of portable sawmills which we understand are needed and widely used on individually owned and operated farms in connection with clearing land.

Pinzgauer cattle are native to the Pinzgau Valley in Austria. For centuries they have been bred as a dual purpose animal for milk and meat.
Pinzgauers are a very adaptable breed and do well in cold climates as well as hot. In this country, they have
gained a foothold from Arizona to Tennessee and are now gaining popularity in Georgia.
According to Kermit Gardner, President of the American Pinzgauer Association, Georgia now has more than 15 breeders with each herd numbering 10 to 700 head.
"Pinzgauers are very dark red with uniform coloring of white on the back, underside and rear. They are in great demand by feedlot operators", according to Mr. Gardner.
Among the desirable characteristics found in the Pinzgauer breed are their maternal qualities. They calve easily and are excellent mothers. Pinzgauers have a gentle disposition, making them easy to handle in a commercial herd.
The American Pinzgauer Association estimates that there are 27,000 head in the United States, but countries from Mozambique to Canada have established herds with numbers growing.

manner rather than one log on top of another for quicker drying.
In our December 5 story on fireplace safety and cleaning techniques, it was recommended that combinations of sodium cloride and calcium cloride, or sodium cloride and copper sulphate, be used as a chemical chimney-sweep. These chemicals are readily available in bulk quantities at most pharmacies and should be combined in equal parts when used for chimney-cleaning purposes.
Remember, sodium cloride (salt) in any form or combination should not be used in a metal stove or fireplace.
If you buy your wood, buy it by the cord or half cord. Many people are disappointed when they buy wood by a "pick-up truck" full. The amount of wood can vary as much as the capacity of the truck.
For reference, a cord of wood is approximately a stack of logs eight feet long, four feet wide and four feet high. A standard half ton pickup truck, stacked tailgate high is approximately half a cord.

energy needs and export marketing. We need consumer support of
our agricultural industry. As long as our people call for pre-cut, pre-cooked and pre-packaged foods, they must expect to pay the costs. And, all citizens need to consider how much real food is included in their supermarket bill. Careful examination will show that non-food items are a great part of the invoice. r A. gr.icu,l.ture nat,i.onwi.d,e and, m. Georgia, will do well in 1980. It is said that a successful society is based on: l.j a sound agricultural base; 2.) abundant resources; 3.) vital major industries; 4.) advanced technology; and 5.) an educated and skilled society. There are more considerations, but these seem important as we move into 1980.
Happy New Year!
IRRIGATION HERE
The multiple-use concept for irrigation systems is fast becoming an accepted practice in Georgia agriculture, says Bob Skinner, Extension Service engineer. Farmers ai^e using multiple-purpose systems to save labor, materials and energy. They are using their irrigation equipment and irrigation water to apply fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, and that means fewer trips over the field.

Unless otherwise stated, butter is made from cow's milk. One pound of butter represents the amount of cream in approximately 10 quarts of milk. The 1923 law you mentioned defined butter as a food product made exclusively from milk or cream, or both, with or without common salt, and with or without additional coloring matter, and con taining not less than 80 percent milkfat by weight.
