Georgia Eggs
In Good Shape
In Georgia, some 23 million hens lay approximately 12.6 million eggs every day, or 4.6 billion annually! This makes the state the second largest egg-producing state in the nation. Income produced from eggs makes this commodity the state's third largest cash farm product.
Eggs are an excellent alternative source of protein and with the
rising prices of food, they can provide the average family with good nutrition for only pennies per serving. The protein value of the egg is so nearly perfect that it is often used as the standard against which other protein-rich foods are measured. Eggs have always been an inflation fighter and today, they continue to be one of the best food buys.
(Our guest columnist this week is Robert N. Howell, Executive Director, Georgia Egg Commission, State Farmers' Market, Forest Pork 30050.)_______________
Over a period of 38 years, Georgia eggs have increased in price only 114 percent, while other protein-rich foods jumped over 400 percent in price.
The egg might be described as oval, ovate, oblong, spherical or even streamlined. No matter how it is described, the egg is certainly one of nature's most perfect shapes.
In addition to being a perfect shape, the egg is also one of nature's most perfect foods. It is one of the few food items which comes prepackaged with no chemical or artificial additives.
The Georgia egg story is told to consumers throughout the state by the Georgia Egg Commission, with offices at the State Farmers' Market in Forest Park.
Funds for the Commission are derived from a producer-paid, 2' per case check-off and administered by a five man producer board, the president of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, the commissioner of agriculture, the state auditor and the attorney general.
To recognize the state's egg producers and the work of the Com-

A farmer's main concern of "how much it costs per acre" to plant seed may now be accurately and easily determined with single-cross hybrid corn. An exact kernel count is now included on the bag labels of some of the hybrid brands, Georgia agriculture officials have announced.
Gullible Consumers Often Disappointed In Beef Deals
Beef for 79 cents a pound, a free chicken, mileage and a cup of coffee? Beef deals such as these are certainly attractive to budget-pressed shoppers. But, consumers should be on their toes. Ads like this are often followed by a "bait and switch" scheme which result in beef costing two to three times more than the advertised 79 cents special.

Buying half a cow has always sounded like a good idea to save money on beef. But consumers need to be aware of the pitfalls of such a venture especially when they intend to save money and instead find themselves owing a finance company hundreds of dollars they had not planned to spend.
The process usually goes like this. Meat bargains are advertised where
you buy x number pounds of dressed carcass on the hook. The price per
Because of this new information on the labels, farmers may calculate very accurately how much seed to purchase per acre and what the cost per acre will be.
The demand for the advantages of single-cross corn hybrids has increased dramatically in the past 10 to 12 years due to the generally superior performance of these hybrids. However, when the hybrid kernels were sized and packaged, the number of kernels per bag varied, from less than 60 thousand for the largest kernels to almost 120 thousand for the smallest.
This disparity in size and number of kernels per bag proved confusing to many dealers and farmers parti-
cularly since the seed was packaged and sold according to weight. Using bag weight as a measure of how many bags to buy per acre involved too much guess-work and complicated the decision of how much to buy.

Agricultural
seed and plants
for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertis er and not purchased for resale.
Bhieberry plants which are ad vertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.

Grandpa's
Garden
Mrs. Ellis Gopeland of Pavo sent us this helpful hint on caring for fruit trees. "Place two or three little thick pines or cedar trees around the fruit tree for protection." According to Mrs. Copeland, the method has worked for her and protected fruit trees, especially tropical ones like orange and kumquat, down to 14 degrees. She also added that used Christmas trees provide excellent mulch material for the trees.
If you are feeding birds at your house during cold winter months, try a little peanut butter mixed with cornmeal. The cornmeal added to the mixture keeps the birds from choking.
It's later than you think. You should decide now on what vegetables you want in your garden and order them from seed houses early. Check your tools and be sure they are repaired. Even though it's shiver weather now, spring planting days will be here soon.

The exotic aroma of cinnamon has been considered a valuable spice for many centuries. In fact, it was known as a spice as early as 500 B.C. Therefore, it is not unusual that Biblical reference to cinnamon appears early in the Old Testament.
Take thou also unto thee princi ple spices of pure myrrh five hun dred shekels and of sweet cinna mon half so much ..... And thou shalt make it an oil of holy oint ment .... And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith.... Exodus 30:23, 25, 26
For many centuries the Arabs kept the secret of cinnamon to themselves. When they did produce it on the world market, it was used only for religious ceremonies and other equally important rites.
The cinnamon tree is native to India, Ceylon and Malaya. The bark of the tree and shoots or branches are cut and wrapped around a thin rod. The outer skin is scraped off and the quiils of cinnamon are ready for market.
Finally, in Revelation 18;11, 12, 13, 15 the dramatic fall of Babylon is foretold. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their mer chandise any more:..... all manner vessels of most precious wood... And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments... The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing...
Cinnamon is a tropical tree. Although the cinnamon tree can not grow in our climate, the aroma and fragrance of cinnamon are well known throughout the world.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Gullible Consumers Often Disappointed
(Continued From Page 1)
pound is unbelievably low and includes all cuts of meat some steak, a few roasts, a brisket and lots of hamburger.
The dealer shows the prospective customer the advertised cow which is often an over-fat, wasty carcass. It may be graded "USDA Choice", but has been specially selected as a wasty specimen which is not typical of the grade.
Right beside the undesirable carcass will be another leaner more attractive carcass which the dealer will convince the customer he really wants for his family. Naturally, the cost is more.
Even though this leaner carcass may not be stamped "USDA Prime" or "USDA Choice", the dealer may assure the customer that it has been graded or that it is "Fancy", "Supreme" or some other likely sounding grade name.
Before the customer realizes what is happening, he has signed the dott-
ed line for the better carcass. And, since the costs are more, the total
amount is often handled through a finance company.
If you are buying beef by the carcass, remember you will have to take into account the resulting edible meat, the waste, the quality of meat and the costs of cutting, wrapping and quick-freezing. Be sure to ask if you will have to pay extra for packaging or if the costs are included in the price per pound.
Be sure you know your meat packer. There are reputable establishments throughout the state that will sell you exactly what you want without trying the 'bait and switch' trick.
The responsibility, however, still rests with the consumer to know what he is buying and read contracts before signing.

A cow is not all steak. For example a 1000 pound steer will yield 61.5 per cent of live weight or 615 pounds dressed carcass. 183 pounds of this will be fat, bone and loss leaving 432 pounds of edible beef. [This is the ideal ratio rather than the average which can vary from 10 to 15 percent less.]
Corn Planting
(Continued From Page 1)
Research has shown that size or weight of individual corn kernels does not influence performance in the field. The amount of seed necessary for each acre and the cost of this seed proved to be most important to corn growers.
Therefore, some hybrid seed suppliers have begun marketing seed corn in units with exact kernel counts per bag in an effort to meet these needs. Under Georgia seed law, bag weight is still required on labels but kernel counts may be included as additional information.
Some dealers still market their seed in bags of uniform size and weight, labelling each bag with the approximate kernel count for each hybrid seed size. Still others use a combination of the systems.
Tobacco Meeting
Scheduled Feb. 6
Tobacco farmers are encouraged to attend the Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation meeting in Douglas on February 6. The meeting will convene at 2 PM at the Coffee County Courthouse.
Growers will be provided with upto-date information on the Cooperative's operations; activities of Tobacco Associates, Inc.; USDA-AMS Inspection (Grading) Service; Tobacco Growers' Information Committee and more.
Georgia Director Frank Strickland said, "Flue-cured growers are urged to make every effort to attend Stabilization's meeting in order to get a better understanding of the Cooperative's operations."
